Chapter 126 - Chapter 55: Wrapping Up the Reality Show

Chapter 55: Wrapping Up the Reality Show

On the rooftop, the pristine moonlight cascaded over the top of the academic building, coating the quiet evening in a layer of brilliant silver. The distant city lights flickered like an earthly constellation, and the sky-high towers clustered together as tightly as a dense bamboo forest, putting the sheer prosperity of Tokyo on full display.

Hikaru Hoshino and Ai stood facing each other. Ai positioned herself close to the edge of the concrete guardrail, her purple hair dancing softly in the night breeze as the moonlight skipped across the strands, while Hikaru stood closer to the stairwell entrance, a distance of a few paces separating them.

Hikaru took a decisive step forward, his fists tightening as a trace of nerves colored his voice. "Is it really impossible for us... to at least try and see where things go?"

Ai gave her head a gentle shake. "No can do!"

She systematically turned her body around, leaving her back to Hikaru. Her long purple hair fluttered in the evening air as the silver moonlight traced the delicate silhouette of her form.

Ai's voice carried an exceptionally soft texture. "I am incredibly sorry, but I'm afraid I simply don't possess that heart-fluttering feeling toward you. Even though you are remarkably talented and profoundly kind, I just cannot bring myself to love you."

Hikaru pressed his right hand against his chest, as if his heart had been violently struck by an invisible force, causing him to take two staggering steps backward.

*As expected, I got rejected.*

He let out a bitter smile in his heart. Though he had long since anticipated this exact outcome, the wave of despondency still crashed over him like a rising tide the second he heard the words fall directly from Ai's lips.

But then again, this technically marked the absolute first time in his entire life that he had been formally rejected by someone, hadn't it? In his past life, he had never even possessed a target to confess to; in this life, he had at least found the courage to lay his feelings bare.

Furthermore, Ai's rejection was incredibly gentle, sparing him any sense of public humiliation and only cementing his internal conviction that the girl he had fallen for was deeply kind-hearted. It was simply that this particular affection was destined to remain permanently buried in the depths of his chest.

Perhaps, remaining strictly friends truly was the best path forward.

Ai turned her head back around, her eyes shimmering with genuine apology. "But... we can start out by just being friends, right?"

Her voice was like a stray beam of moonlight breaking into Hikaru's heart, quietly seeding a fresh trace of hope within him.

"Personally, I think... we're already friends," Hikaru said with a carefree, easygoing smile.

...

*One, two, three...* He systematically counted the seconds in his head.

*Why aren't they calling cut yet? This is getting a bit awkward.*

Right at that moment, the director's voice finally boomed from not too far away: "Cut! Beautiful, that's a wrap on this sequence. Let's head downstairs to shoot the final farewell ceremony."

Hikaru executed a flawless, instantaneous shift in facial expression, the tightly contorted muscles of his face snapping back to their baseline in a split second.

He let out a massive yawn. "Is it finally over? I seriously want to sleep."

The other cast members filtered out from behind the camera rigs, swarming around Hikaru and Ai.

"You guys took forever," Frill Shiranui noted, her eyes locking onto Hikaru. "Were you two whispering sweet nothings to each other earlier?"

"Yeah, we were," Hikaru admitted with absolute transparency. "Got a problem with that?"

Ai's fingers laced together tightly as a deep, crimson blush painted her cheeks.

"Whoa, hold on a second." Emi Sai locked onto Ai's highly unusual behavior. "Wasn't Hikaru's confession supposed to get rejected? That face says otherwise."

"Wasn't that whole thing just for show anyway?" Takuya Taira asked, scratching his head.

Jin Fuyuno gave Hikaru a comforting pat on the shoulder. "Don't sweat it, man. Your secret's safe with us."

Hikaru didn't know whether to laugh or cry. "No, seriously, where are your minds even wandering off to? Absolutely nothing happened between Ai and me."

"Right, absolutely nothing happened," Frill agreed with a slow nod.

*Trying to reason with a crowd that is actively looking to tease you is an absolute exercise in futility.* Hikaru internalised this universal truth with profound clarity.

Chattering and laughing, the group made their way down the school building and stepped into the pre-arranged auditorium. Spotlights were erected dead center in the dimly lit hall, several camera setups were locked into position, and staff members were running final technical checks. The director stood center stage, fully prepared to anchor this absolute final segment.

The director opened with a bright smile. "This reality show has spanned a total of three months, and we have finally arrived at the finish line. As the director behind the scenes, I will be stepping up to act as your host for tonight's grand finale."

He paused for a beat, deliberately manufacturing dramatic suspense. "Out of our six phenomenal guests, the number of individuals who successfully paired up is... two! That's right, a grand total of only two people. Are the youths of today simply far more conservative? In the reality shows of yesteryear, the matchmaking success rate could sometimes hit a staggering 100%!"

"Our single successful couple is none other than Takuya Taira and Emi Sai!"

The lenses swiftly panned over to Takuya and Emi, who were sweetly holding hands. Emi rested her head languidly against Takuya's shoulder, her face radiating pure, unadulterated happiness.

The director asked with a chuckle, "A vast number of fans are dying to know: once the reality show officially wraps up, will you two continue dating in real life?"

Takuya gave a solemn, earnest nod. "Without a doubt. I'm not the type of guy who treats relationships lightly."

Emi chimed in with equal sweetness, "Me neither! Moving forward, I plan to invite Takuya's band to perform live on my stream channel, and I'll be hitting up his underground live shows on the regular. We're both based right here in Tokyo, so we plan to go on dates every single day!"

The director swerved to face the remaining duo. "And then we have Frill Shiranui and Jin Fuyuno. Regrettably, it seems these two merely went through the motions."

The two individuals stood dead on the spot like a pair of cool, unmoving wooden stakes.

Jin immediately voiced his loud protest. "Saying we just 'went through the motions' is way too hurtful, Director! I just happen to maintain exceptionally high standards, that's all!"

Frill tilted her head slightly. "Telling a girl right to her face that your standards are too high... Jin-kun truly is a master of comedy."

"That is officially the first time anyone has ever complimented my sense of humor, so thank you," Jin said, executing a dramatic bow toward Frill. "In any case, I walked away having learned an immense amount through this program, so it definitely wasn't just 'going through the motions' for me."

Frill signaled her absolute agreement. "True. The filming process itself was remarkably entertaining. If any other entertainers receive an invitation for future seasons, I highly recommend signing up right away."

The atmosphere in the hall remained incredibly light and joyous. Now that they had arrived at the absolute precipice of wrapping production, everyone felt completely liberated, entirely stripped of the stiff anxiety that had defined the initial episodes.

The director shook his head, adopting a look of exaggerated, theatrical disappointment. "The absolute greatest tragedy, of course, remains our commercial pop star Hikari and our top idol Ai Hoshino. These two possess the absolute highest star-power on the roster; to be perfectly frank, even the producers' hearts bled a little when writing out their talent fees. And yet, they still failed to walk away as a couple. What an absolute waste of budget!"

Hikaru threw his hands up in a helpless gesture. "Hey, I put every single ounce of my soul into trying, alright?"

Ai blinked innocently. "But when I initially accepted the contract invitation, the production crew explicitly told me I was just coming on the show to make some new friends."

The director's jaw dropped into an exaggerated gape. "So you're saying this is entirely my fault?!"

The group systematically adjusted their positions, gathering together in the grand auditorium to shoot the absolute final commemorative cast photo. The photographer directed them into two parallel rows while the lighting technician fine-tuned the angles of the overhead fixtures.

"Alright, everyone squeeze in a little closer, and let's keep those smiles looking natural," the photographer called out, raising the camera lens.

The six young men and women struck an assortment of distinct poses. Takuya and Emi sat dead center, sweetly interlocking their fingers, with Emi playfully throwing up a peace sign while Takuya slung an arm securely around her shoulder, his face masks of pure joy. Frill stood elegantly off to one side, looking thoroughly high-class and aloof, while Jin nervously scratched his head, completely at a loss as to what pose he should even strike.

Hikaru gave Jin a light nudge. "You're crowding me, Jin. Shuffle over that way a bit."

Jin immediately shoved right back. "Senior, you're clearly the one crowding *me*. Why don't you shuffle over toward Senior Ai's side?"

"Hikaru, you just stepped on my foot!" Ai cried out in surprise.

*Click.*

With the sharp snap of the shutter, the chaotic, lively positions of the cast were permanently frozen in time. The director peered down at the capture on the camera monitor, his brow furrowing into a deep scowl. "A complete, disorganized mess. What on earth does this look like?" he barked.

"Hurry up, we're retaking it," he said, waving his arm aggressively. "Hikaru Hoshino, don't stand so far away. Move closer to Ai."

Left with no choice, Hikaru quietly drifted over until he was practically pressed against Ai's side.

The director thought it over for a beat before bellowing at the top of his lungs: "And remember to keep your eyes open, everyone!"

The entire cast broke character instantly, dissolving into a collective roar of helpless laughter right there on the spot. And amidst a sea of vibrant, ringing laughter, the recording for the reality dating show officially drew to its definitive close.
