Chapter 11 - The Safe Space

Sometimes, a person doesn't fix your life… they just become a place where you can finally breathe without fear.

Something had changed.

Not suddenly.

Not loudly.

Not in a way that others could notice.

But inside me…

Something had shifted.

It wasn't a big transformation.

It wasn't like all my problems had disappeared.

My thoughts were still there.

My overthinking still came back sometimes.

My fears didn't magically vanish.

But they didn't feel as powerful as before.

They didn't control me the same way.

And slowly…

That started making a difference.

A quiet one.

But a real one.

The next morning, I woke up before my alarm.

That almost never happened.

Usually, mornings felt heavy.

Like something I had to force myself through.

Like something I had to survive.

But today…

It felt different.

Not perfect.

But lighter.

I lay there for a moment, staring at the ceiling.

Listening to the quiet of my room.

Feeling my own breathing.

Slow.

Steady.

Normal.

I didn't rush to get up.

I didn't feel that pressure.

I just… stayed.

For a few seconds.

Letting the moment exist.

And then slowly, I sat up.

There was no rush.

No panic.

No overwhelming thoughts pulling me in different directions.

Just… calm.

That itself felt strange.

But also… comforting.

I got ready for school like always.

Same routine.

Same steps.

But this time…

I was more aware.

More present.

More connected to what I was doing.

As I walked towards school, I noticed small things.

The sound of footsteps.

The movement of people around me.

The slight breeze touching my face.

Earlier, I would have missed all of this.

Because my mind would have been somewhere else.

Lost in thoughts.

Lost in overthinking.

But now…

I was here.

In the moment.

And that felt new.

When I reached the school corridor…

My eyes searched.

Not consciously.

But naturally.

And there they were.

Standing in the same place.

Calm.

Quiet.

Just like always.

But this time…

Something felt different.

I didn't hesitate.

I didn't overthink.

I just… walked towards them.

"Hey," I said.

"Hey," they replied.

And just like that…

Everything felt normal.

No awkwardness.

No pressure.

Just… natural.

We stood there for a few seconds.

Not saying anything.

But it didn't feel uncomfortable.

It felt… peaceful.

Like we didn't need words to fill the space.

Like silence itself was enough.

During class, I noticed something important.

I was focusing better.

Not perfectly.

But better than before.

Because my mind wasn't constantly pulling me away.

It wasn't filled with endless thoughts.

It wasn't fighting me every second.

Instead…

It was calmer.

And that made everything easier.

When my thoughts did drift…

I brought them back.

Gently.

Without frustration.

Without forcing myself.

And that small change…

It was working.

During the break, we sat together.

Not planned.

Not discussed.

It just… happened.

We found a quiet place.

Away from the noise.

Away from the crowd.

And sat there.

For a moment…

Neither of us spoke.

But the silence didn't feel empty.

It felt full.

Full of comfort.

Full of something unspoken.

"Do you ever feel like this is the only place you can breathe?" they asked suddenly.

I looked at them.

"What do you mean?"

They thought for a moment.

"Like… everywhere else feels heavy."

"Like you have to be something… or act a certain way."

"But here…"

They paused.

"It feels easier."

I understood.

Without needing more explanation.

"Yeah," I said softly.

"I feel that too."

They nodded slowly.

"I don't know why."

I thought about it.

And then said—

"Maybe because we don't expect anything from each other."

They looked at me.

"Yeah… maybe."

That moment stayed.

Because it felt real.

Because it felt honest.

Because it didn't need anything extra.

Just understanding.

As days passed…

This became routine.

Not a forced one.

But a natural one.

We met.

We talked.

We sat in silence.

We walked together.

And slowly…

That silence started feeling like something else.

Something safe.

Something comforting.

Something I didn't want to lose.

One day, after school, something unexpected happened.

The sky suddenly turned grey.

Clouds covered everything.

The wind became cooler.

And within minutes…

It started raining.

Not too heavily.

But enough to change the atmosphere.

Students started running.

Trying to avoid getting wet.

Some laughed.

Some complained.

But everything felt chaotic.

Except for one thing—

Us.

We stood under a small shelter.

Watching the rain fall.

Not moving.

Not rushing.

Just… standing there.

Together.

The sound of rain filled the air.

Soft.

Steady.

Calming.

And for a moment…

It felt like everything else disappeared.

"Do you like rain?" they asked.

"Yeah," I said.

"It makes everything feel quieter."

They nodded.

"Same."

We stood there for a long time.

Watching the drops hit the ground.

Listening to the rhythm.

And somehow…

It felt peaceful.

Like time had slowed down.

Like nothing else mattered.

"Do you ever feel like you're slowly becoming okay?" they asked after a while.

I thought about it.

Not rushing to answer.

Not overthinking.

Just… thinking.

"I think so," I said.

"Not completely… but better than before."

They nodded slowly.

"Me too."

There was a pause.

A meaningful one.

"And I think… it's because of this," they said.

I looked at them.

"This?"

They gestured slightly between us.

"This… whatever this is."

I didn't answer immediately.

Because I didn't know what to call it either.

But I understood.

"It feels real," I said.

"Yeah."

"Not forced."

"Not complicated."

"Just… natural."

They looked at me.

And for a moment…

Something shifted.

Something deeper.

Something unspoken.

After the rain stopped, we started walking.

Slowly.

Not rushing.

Like we didn't want the moment to end.

"You know…" they said quietly.

"I don't feel as alone anymore."

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was exactly how I felt.

"I think… I don't either," I replied.

And that was the truth.

For the first time in a long time…

I didn't feel completely alone.

Because now…

There was someone who understood.

Someone who didn't need explanations.

Someone who made things feel easier.

That evening, I sat near the window again.

Looking outside.

But this time…

I wasn't lost in my thoughts.

I was just… present.

Calm.

Aware.

And slowly…

I realized something important—

They had become my safe space.

Not in a way that I depended on them.

Not in a way that I couldn't function without them.

But in a way that…

Being around them made everything feel lighter.

Easier.

More manageable.

And maybe…

That's what a real connection feels like.

Not something that removes your pain.

But something that helps you carry it.

That night, as I lay on my bed…

My thoughts came.

But they didn't feel heavy.

They didn't overwhelm me.

They just… existed.

And I let them.

Because now…

I wasn't afraid of them.

And maybe…

That was the biggest change of all.
