📖 Shadow Reign: Rise of the Broken KingChapter 7: The First King's Mark

The battlefield exploded.

Stone shattered in every direction as Arjun and the Watcher collided in the center of the ruined zone.

The shadow blade in Arjun's hand met the monster's claw—

CLANG!

A violent shockwave tore across the ground.

Arjun slid backward several feet, his boots carving deep lines into the black stone.

The Watcher barely moved.

Its burning red eyes stared at him with cold hatred.

But this time—

Arjun could see something else in them.

Caution.

He smiled.

"So you can bleed after all."

Black blood dripped from the wound across the creature's chest, hissing as it touched the ground.

The Watcher's voice echoed inside his mind again.

"You are becoming dangerous."

Arjun rolled his shoulder and tightened his grip on the shadow blade.

"Good."

The monster roared.

The sound alone shook the air.

Then it raised one arm.

Dark energy gathered around its claws.

Arjun's expression changed.

"That can't be good."

The Watcher slammed its hand into the ground.

BOOOOM!

The floor cracked instantly.

A wave of black spikes burst upward from the ground, racing toward Arjun like a storm.

"Move!"

[Shadow Step]

WHOOSH!

Arjun vanished.

The spikes destroyed the place where he had stood only a second earlier.

He reappeared behind the monster and swung for its neck.

But the Watcher turned unnaturally fast.

CLANG!

Its claw blocked the blade again.

Then—

The second claw came from below.

Arjun barely jumped back in time.

Sharp black claws sliced through the air inches from his chest.

He landed hard and frowned.

"…It's adapting."

And it was true.

Every time Arjun attacked—

The Watcher learned.

Every movement.

Every pattern.

Every weakness.

Arjun wiped sweat from his forehead.

"So if this continues…"

He looked up.

"It'll eventually kill me."

The monster slowly smiled.

A horrible, unnatural smile.

"Correct."

Then it disappeared.

Arjun's eyes widened.

"Again?!"

He spun—

Too late.

BAM!

The Watcher's fist slammed into his ribs.

A sickening crack echoed through the battlefield.

Arjun flew through the air and crashed through a broken stone pillar.

Pain exploded through his body.

He coughed blood.

[Warning: Rib damage detected]

[HP falling]

Arjun forced himself up, breathing heavily.

His left side burned.

"Damn…"

The creature walked toward him.

Slowly.

Confidently.

It knew he was weakening.

Arjun stared at his own trembling hand.

"This thing…"

He clenched his fist.

"…is stronger than me."

For a brief second, old memories flashed in his mind.

Lying in the rain.

Broken.

Helpless.

Betrayed.

Weak.

Just like before.

The same feeling.

The same helplessness.

The same rage.

"No…"

The shadows around him began to tremble.

"I won't feel that again."

The Watcher stopped.

Its eyes narrowed.

Dark energy started rising from Arjun's body.

At first it was small.

Then stronger.

Then violent.

The ground around him began cracking.

The system suddenly appeared.

DING!

[Emotion Threshold Reached]

[Hidden Growth Condition Met]

[King's Mark Awakening…]

Arjun froze.

"…King's Mark?"

Pain suddenly surged through his chest.

He dropped to one knee.

"AAAGH!"

A burning sensation spread across his skin.

Something was carving itself into his body.

The Watcher stepped back.

For the first time—

It looked afraid.

"No…"

Arjun's breathing turned heavy.

Dark symbols began glowing across his right hand.

A strange black mark formed on the back of his palm.

Like a crown made of shadows.

Then the pain stopped.

Silence filled the battlefield.

Arjun slowly looked at his hand.

The mark pulsed once.

Power flooded through him.

Not just strength.

Authority.

The Watcher whispered—

"The Mark of a Shadow King…"

Arjun looked up slowly.

His red eyes now glowed brighter than before.

"Shadow King?"

A dark smile appeared.

"I like the sound of that."

The Watcher suddenly roared and charged.

But Arjun didn't move.

He simply raised his marked hand.

The shadows beneath the boss instantly rose.

BOOM!

Massive chains wrapped around the creature's body.

The Watcher struggled violently—

But the chains held.

Its eyes widened.

Arjun stared at his own hand in shock.

"I didn't even use a skill…"

The system answered.

[King's Mark grants natural authority over lesser shadows]

Arjun's heartbeat slowed.

A grin spread across his face.

"So that's what this is."

He walked forward slowly.

Each step calm.

Each step filled with pressure.

The Watcher struggled harder.

But the chains tightened.

Cracking its armor.

Arjun stood directly in front of it.

The shadow blade reformed in his hand.

Longer this time.

Sharper.

Darker.

The Watcher stared at him.

Not with hatred anymore.

With fear.

Arjun lifted the blade.

"You were right about one thing."

The creature trembled.

Arjun's smile widened.

"I am becoming dangerous."

Then he thrust the blade toward the creature's glowing core.

STAB!

The Watcher screamed.

The red light in its chest cracked.

The entire zone shook violently.

Arjun stepped back as the creature began collapsing.

But before it fell—

The Watcher looked at him one last time.

And whispered—

"He has found you…"

Arjun's eyes narrowed.

"…Who?"

The Watcher smiled.

Then its body shattered into darkness.

And vanished.

DING!

[Zone Boss Defeated]

[Zone 1 Cleared]

[Special Reward Granted]

But Arjun wasn't smiling.

He stared at the empty space where the monster disappeared.

One sentence echoed in his mind.

He has found you.

And for the first time since entering this world—

Arjun felt something unexpected.

Not fear.

Something worse.

The feeling that someone…

Was already watching him.
