Chapter 7 - A surprise - "We are now Dating'

"Yeah… I know what you're thinking," his voice would say, almost amused, almost distant. "Why not me, right?"

A pause.

"Simple answer?"

"I said no."

It didn't happen all at once.

It never does.

Feelings, like everything else, follow patterns. Subtle at first. Barely noticeable. Then they repeat. Then they deepen.

And if you're paying attention—

You see them long before they're spoken.

It started after everything settled.

After the apology. After the distance. After Nora stopped being *Nora Hamin, the untouchable*, and became… just Nora.

She didn't hover around O'Brian.

Not anymore.

Not after that day.

But she stayed close.

Not to him—

To Daniel.

At first, it made sense.

Daniel was easier to talk to. Easier to understand. He didn't dissect her words or strip meaning from her pauses. He just… responded.

Naturally.

"Do you always talk this much?" Nora asked one afternoon, sitting beside him under the same tree he once shared with O'Brian.

Daniel grinned. "Only when I'm conscious."

"…That's reassuring."

"And you?" he leaned back slightly. "Do you always look like you're planning something?"

She paused.

Then, for the first time—

She smiled without calculation.

"…Not anymore."

That was the beginning.

O'Brian noticed.

Of course he did.

Not because he was looking for it.

Because it was there.

Patterns.

Frequency.

Proximity.

Nora sitting closer to Daniel than before. Conversations lasting longer. Her tone shifting—lighter, less guarded. Daniel's laughter becoming more frequent around her.

And then—

The smallest details.

The kind most people miss.

Daniel adjusting his posture when she approached. Nora glancing at him before responding to something O'Brian said. The slight delay in their reactions when they realized O'Brian was watching.

Microseconds.

But enough.

"Something's off," Daniel muttered one day.

"Yes," O'Brian replied calmly.

"…You feel it too?"

"I see it."

Daniel frowned. "See what?"

O'Brian turned a page in his book. "You'll figure it out."

"…That's not helpful."

"It's not meant to be."

Time passed.

Weeks turned into months.

And somewhere in that time—

Feelings shifted.

Nora didn't realize it at first.

She told herself she was just comfortable. That Daniel was easy. Safe.

Not like O'Brian.

O'Brian was—

Complicated.

Too aware. Too precise. Too… distant.

She had liked him once.

That much was true.

But that feeling—

Had changed.

Quietly.

Without announcement.

Without permission.

It happened on a late afternoon.

The sun hung low, casting long shadows across the school courtyard. Students were leaving in clusters, voices fading into the distance.

Nora sat on the bench.

Daniel stood in front of her.

Nervous.

Uncharacteristically so.

"You've been acting weird," she said, tilting her head slightly.

"I know."

"Good. So I'm not imagining it."

"You're not."

A pause.

"…Then what is it?"

Daniel exhaled.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

"I like you."

Silence.

Not awkward.

Not immediate.

Just… still.

Nora blinked.

"You—what?"

"I like you," he repeated, quieter now. "Not like before. Not like friends."

A pause.

"I didn't mean for it to happen," he added quickly. "It just… did."

She didn't respond.

Didn't look away.

Just… sat there.

Processing.

Because somewhere deep down—

She already knew.

"I think I started noticing it when you stopped being… her," Daniel continued. "When you stopped trying to be something and just—were."

Another pause.

"And I didn't realize when it changed. Just that it did."

Silence stretched.

Then—

Nora spoke.

"…You're an idiot."

Daniel froze. "That's not—encouraging."

She stood.

Walked closer.

Close enough that he stopped breathing for a second.

"…Do you know how long I've been trying to figure out what I feel?" she asked softly.

Daniel blinked. "…No?"

"Neither do I."

A pause.

"But I know this."

She looked at him.

Not past him.

Not around him.

At him.

"When you're not there," she said, "it feels… wrong."

Daniel's breath caught.

"And when you are?"

She hesitated.

Then—

"…It feels right."

Silence.

Then—

A small, almost nervous smile.

"…So yeah," she added quietly. "I think I like you too."

Daniel stared at her.

Processing.

Failing.

Trying again.

"…So what does that mean?"

Nora exhaled softly.

"It means," she said, "we're both idiots."

A pause.

"Together."

Daniel laughed.

Relief flooding through him.

"…I can work with that."

And just like that—

They began.

They didn't tell O'Brian.

Not immediately.

Not because they didn't want to.

Because they didn't know how.

"How do we even say it?" Daniel asked one day.

"Just… say it," Nora replied.

"It's not that simple."

"It is."

"…It's not!"

She sighed. "Then what's the problem?"

Daniel hesitated.

"…It's him."

Nora paused.

Because she understood.

O'Brian wasn't just their friend.

He was—

Different.

And telling him something like this felt less like sharing news and more like stepping into unknown territory.

"What if he doesn't take it well?" Daniel asked.

Nora frowned slightly. "He's not like that."

"I know but—he's still…"

"A puzzle?" she offered.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

"We'll tell him," she said firmly. "Together."

Daniel nodded.

"…Together."

O'Brian noticed.

Long before they said anything.

Of course he did.

The distance between them shortening. The unspoken understanding in their conversations. The way their hands brushed—once, then twice, then intentionally.

The glances.

The pauses.

The silence that wasn't empty—but full.

He saw it all.

Said nothing.

Because some things—

Needed time.

They finally told him on a quiet afternoon.

The three of them sat together, as they often did.

But this time—

Something was different.

Daniel shifted slightly.

Nora avoided eye contact.

O'Brian closed his book.

"…You're going to tell me," he said calmly.

Both of them froze.

Daniel blinked. "What?"

"You've been preparing for this conversation for three days," O'Brian continued. "Your tone has been inconsistent. Your posture is defensive. And you've both been avoiding direct statements."

A pause.

"…So go ahead."

Silence.

Then—

Daniel exhaled.

"…We're dating."

There it was.

Simple.

Direct.

Real.

A pause.

O'Brian nodded once.

"Okay."

Silence.

Daniel blinked. "That's it?"

"Yes."

Nora frowned slightly. "You're not… upset?"

"No."

"Why not?"

O'Brian tilted his head slightly.

"You think I didn't know?"

They stared at him.

"You've been exhibiting consistent behavioral patterns for months," he continued. "Increased proximity. Mutual attention shifts. Emotional synchronization. It was obvious."

Daniel blinked. "…You could've said something."

"I was waiting."

"For what?"

"For you to tell me."

A pause.

"When you were comfortable."

Silence settled.

Not heavy.

Not tense.

Just… understood.

Nora exhaled softly. "…You're strange."

"I've been told."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"…Thanks," he said.

"For what?"

"For not making it weird."

O'Brian considered that.

Then—

"It was already weird."

Nora rolled her eyes slightly.

Daniel smiled.

And just like that—

Nothing broke.

Graduation approached faster than expected.

Days blurred into preparation. Exams, final projects, decisions about the future.

And yet—

Some things remained constant.

The three of them.

Together.

Walking the same halls.

Sitting under the same tree.

Laughing—more now than before.

"Can you believe this is ending?" Daniel asked one afternoon.

"No," Nora replied.

"Yes," O'Brian said.

They both looked at him.

"…That wasn't emotional at all."

"It wasn't meant to be."

Nora shook her head. "You really don't feel anything, do you?"

O'Brian paused.

Then—

"I do."

A beat.

"I just don't display it the way you expect."

Silence.

"…Fair," Daniel muttered.

Graduation day arrived.

Formal. Structured. Significant.

Students gathered.

Families watched.

Names were called.

Achievements announced.

And when O'Brian's name echoed through the hall—

There was no surprise.

Top of the class.

Of course.

Daniel followed.

Not far behind.

Nora too.

Standing strong.

Standing proud.

And for a moment—

Everything felt complete.

After the ceremony, they stood together one last time.

No uniforms.

No expectations.

Just themselves.

"So…" Daniel said, rubbing the back of his neck. "What now?"

"University," Nora replied.

"Obviously."

A pause.

"And after that?" he asked.

Silence lingered.

Then—

O'Brian spoke.

"After that," he said, "we continue."

They both looked at him.

"Life doesn't end here," he added. "It changes."

A beat.

"So will we."

Nora smiled softly.

Daniel nodded.

"…Yeah," he said. "We will."

A pause.

Then—

"Hey," Daniel added, glancing between them. "No matter what happens—"

"We know," Nora said.

O'Brian didn't speak.

But he understood.

And that was enough.

"Funny, isn't it?" his voice would say later.

"How things turn out."

A pause.

"I wasn't the one she chose."

Another pause.

"I was the one who saw it coming."

And somehow—

That made all the difference.
