Chapter 12 - Until Today

Monday did not ease them back into routine—it rearranged it.

For weeks, their schedules had run like separate currents—never intersecting, never clashing. Different classes. Different wings. Different hours. Too consistent to be coincidence.

Until today.

---

The physics lecture hall carried its usual order—tiered rows, polished floors, chalk dust faint in the air. Sunlight stretched across desks as students filtered in, voices low, movements unremarkable.

Lynn Mackenzie entered without pause.

Her gaze swept once—measured, precise—and she chose her seat midway up the hall. A vantage point. Not too close. Not too far.

Her bag rested beside her.

She leaned back slightly.

Watching.

---

Kaiden arrived next.

No hesitation. No wasted movement. He took a seat near the front, posture already aligned with the board, pen ready before the lecture began.

Colton followed, dropping beside him with effortless ease. His pen spun lazily between his fingers—but his eyes remained sharp, alert.

Then—

Kim.

A brief scan. A flicker of recognition passed through her gaze as it brushed over Kaiden and Colton. She chose a seat across the aisle—close enough to observe, far enough to remain uninvolved.

And then—

Kacy.

She slipped in quietly.

Almost invisible.

Almost.

Lynn's eyes found her immediately.

And stayed.

---

The lecture began.

Equations layered across the board. The professor's voice steady, structured, precise.

Most students followed.

Some struggled.

A few pretended.

Lynn observed.

---

Kacy's pen hovered over her notebook.

Her eyes… didn't.

They drifted.

Once.

Twice.

And each time—

They settled on Kaiden.

Lynn's gaze shifted.

Kaiden remained unmoving, focused, absorbed. Every note deliberate. Every movement controlled.

No distractions.

Colton leaned back, relaxed—but attentive beneath the surface.

Kim sat upright, composed, watching more than she let on.

And still—

There was something between them.

Unspoken.

Intentional.

Lynn's fingers tapped once.

So this is what happens when you're all placed together.

Her gaze returned to Kacy.

Absent-minded.

And yet—

Connected.

---

"Miss."

The professor's voice cut through the room.

Kacy blinked, lifting her head.

"Yes. You." He gestured toward her. "Since your attention seems elsewhere."

A few students shifted.

Kacy straightened slightly. "I'm sorry, sir."

"Good. Then explain this."

He tapped the equation.

Kacy looked at it.

Quiet.

Still.

"I…" A pause. Then calmly, "I'm sorry, sir. I wasn't fully present."

A ripple passed through the class.

The professor sighed, turning to face everyone. "And this is exactly why attention matters."

His tone hardened.

"Some of you drift through lectures like this is optional. Then people wonder why institutions like this are seen as places for privilege instead of discipline."

Near the front—

Colton leaned forward. "Sir, I can—"

"I'd like to answer."

Kim's voice overlapped his.

The professor turned—

"Sir."

Lynn was already standing.

Composed. Certain.

"If I may."

A brief pause.

Then—"Go ahead."

She stepped into the aisle, moving toward the board.

"The issue isn't difficulty," she began, picking up the chalk. "It's structure."

A glance—brief—toward Kacy.

Then back.

"The equation introduces unnecessary complexity too early. If you eliminate the redundant variables here—"

Chalk moved.

Clean. Precise.

"—and rebuild from the base conditions…"

The solution unfolded.

Clear.

Efficient.

Correct.

She stepped back.

Silence.

"…Correct," the professor admitted.

Lynn turned.

Her gaze settled on Kacy.

"You might have found it easier," she said lightly, "if you weren't drifting."

Smooth.

Polished.

Sharp underneath.

Kacy met her gaze.

"…Perhaps," she replied softly.

Calm.

Unshaken.

Lynn noticed.

And it intrigued her.

---

The bell rang.

Sharp. Final.

Kacy stood immediately.

Books gathered. Bag over her shoulder.

She walked out without looking back.

---

The hallway buzzed with movement.

"Kaitlyn."

Lynn's voice cut through the noise.

Kacy stopped.

Turned.

Lynn approached, unhurried.

"You left quickly."

"I have another class."

"Of course."

A pause.

Then—

"You drift a lot," Lynn said. "For someone surrounded by… interesting people."

Kacy adjusted her bag slightly. "Do I?"

"You watch him often."

Silence.

Then—

"You seem very interested in what I do," Kacy said.

"I am."

A beat.

"Why?"

Lynn stepped closer.

"Because people like you don't end up around people like them by accident."

Their eyes locked.

Measured.

Unyielding.

Kacy held her gaze for a moment longer this time.

Then—

A faint, knowing curve touched her lips.

"That's interesting," she said softly. "Especially since our classes never seem to align."

A pause.

Subtle.

Pointed.

"Until today."

Lynn didn't respond immediately.

Kacy shifted her bag on her shoulder.

"Maybe you should think about that too."

Then she turned.

And walked away.

---

Behind them—

Colton's expression darkened.

Kim's gaze hardened.

Kaiden remained still.

But his eyes followed.

And Lynn…

Lynn smiled.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Caught—

But not discouraged.

"…Now that," she murmured under her breath, "makes this even more interesting."
