Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 THE FIRST DATE

Feelings don't always arrive in obvious ways.

They don't always announce themselves with certainty or clarity. Sometimes, they grow quietly, hidden beneath routine conversations and ordinary moments, until one day they become impossible to ignore.

For Landon, that realization came slowly.

At first, he didn't question the time he spent with Jamie. It felt natural—easy in a way he wasn't used to. There was no pressure to impress her, no need to act like someone he wasn't. With her, everything felt… simpler.

But simple didn't mean insignificant.

And somewhere along the way, something changed.

He started noticing things.

The way her eyes softened when she smiled.

The calmness in her voice, even when everything around her felt uncertain.

The way she believed in people—not because they deserved it, but because she chose to.

And the way she believed in him…

That was what stayed with him the most.

It was unfamiliar.

Unsettling.

And yet… it meant more to him than he wanted to admit.

For days, Landon tried to ignore it. He told himself it didn't matter, that it was nothing more than friendship—something temporary, something easy to walk away from.

But the more he tried to convince himself…

the less he believed it.

Because the truth was undeniable.

He wanted to be around her.

Not just during rehearsals.

Not just because of the play.

But because of her.

And once he accepted that, there was only one thing left to do.

Ask her out.

It should have been easy.

For someone like Landon—someone used to confidence, used to attention—it should have been simple. But this wasn't like anything he had experienced before.

This mattered.

And that made it different.

He found her after rehearsal one afternoon, standing just outside the auditorium, flipping through her script. For a moment, he hesitated, watching her quietly.

Then he walked over.

"Hey," he said, trying to sound casual.

Jamie looked up, her expression warm. "Hi."

There was a brief pause.

And suddenly, Landon wasn't sure what to say.

He rubbed the back of his neck, glancing away for a second before looking back at her.

"I was thinking…" he started, then stopped.

Jamie tilted her head slightly, waiting.

"Maybe we could… go somewhere," he finished, his voice less certain than usual.

"Go somewhere?" she repeated gently.

"Yeah. Like… together."

For a moment, everything felt still.

Landon wasn't used to waiting for answers.

But this time, he did.

And then—

Jamie smiled.

"I'd like that," she said.

The simplicity of her answer caught him off guard.

No hesitation.

No confusion.

Just honesty.

And somehow, that made it feel even more real.

The night of the date arrived faster than Landon expected.

And for the first time in a long time…

he was nervous.

Not the kind of nervous that came from uncertainty.

But the kind that came from caring too much.

He thought about everything—what to say, where to go, how to act. He replayed conversations in his head, second-guessing himself in ways he never had before.

This wasn't like him.

But Jamie wasn't like anyone else.

When they met, the air felt different.

Quieter.

More meaningful.

They started at a small diner, tucked away in a quiet part of town. It wasn't fancy or impressive, but it felt right—comfortable, familiar, real.

At first, the conversation was slow.

Not awkward.

Just careful.

Landon found himself thinking before he spoke, choosing his words more thoughtfully than usual. Jamie, on the other hand, seemed at ease, her presence steady and reassuring.

"You don't have to try so hard," she said gently after a moment.

Landon looked at her, surprised. "What do you mean?"

She smiled slightly. "You're overthinking everything."

He let out a quiet laugh. "Is it that obvious?"

"A little."

There was no judgment in her voice.

Just understanding.

And somehow, that made it easier.

As the night went on, the conversation began to flow more naturally. They talked about everything—small things, big things, things that didn't seem important but somehow were.

And for the first time, Landon felt completely himself.

No expectations.

No pressure.

Just honesty.

After dinner, they decided to walk.

The beach was quiet, the sound of the waves steady against the shore. The sky stretched endlessly above them, scattered with stars that seemed brighter than usual.

For a while, they walked in silence.

Not because there was nothing to say.

But because the moment didn't need words.

"Landon?" Jamie said softly.

"Yeah?"

"I'm glad you asked me."

He glanced at her, surprised. "You are?"

She nodded. "You're not who I thought you were."

Landon smiled slightly. "I could say the same about you."

They stopped walking.

The world seemed to slow, the sound of the ocean fading into the background.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

And then—

Landon took a small step closer.

He hesitated.

Not because he wasn't sure.

But because he wanted the moment to be right.

Jamie didn't step back.

She didn't look away.

She simply stayed.

And that was all he needed.

When he leaned in, it wasn't rushed.

It wasn't perfect.

But it was real.

Their first kiss was soft, gentle, and filled with everything they hadn't yet put into words.

And in that moment…

everything changed.

Because this wasn't just a date anymore.

It wasn't just friendship.

It wasn't something temporary.

It was something deeper.

Something real.

Something that would change both of their lives in ways they could not yet understand.
