Chapter 13 - Unwritten Path

The system glitched.

Not visually.

Structurally.

Marcus felt it.

Like pressure suddenly losing direction.

The flowing data around him—

Stuttered.

Paused.

Corrected itself.

But not perfectly.

Elena stared at the projections.

"They're… breaking."

Marcus didn't respond.

Because he wasn't looking at the projections anymore.

He was watching the system itself.

System Reaction

The columns of light intensified.

Brighter.

Faster.

Trying to stabilize.

Trying to adapt.

"Recalibration in progress," the voice echoed.

But this time—

It didn't sound confident.

Cut — Cross

The room wasn't silent anymore.

It was tense.

Data streams fluctuating.

Predictions overlapping.

Conflicts everywhere.

"Sir, we're losing predictive integrity," an analyst said.

Cross didn't react immediately.

He watched the data carefully.

Because this—

This wasn't failure.

It was evolution.

"Let it run," Cross said calmly.

Back to Marcus

Marcus stepped deeper into the core.

The platform beneath him shifted slightly.

Adjusting.

Trying to match him.

But it couldn't.

Elena moved closer.

"Marcus… what did you do?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Because the answer wasn't simple.

"I stopped following patterns," he said finally.

Elena shook her head.

"That's not enough to break something like this."

Marcus looked at her.

"No," he said.

A pause.

"But it's enough to confuse it."

Deeper Layer

The system began projecting again.

New paths.

New predictions.

Faster than before.

More aggressive.

Trying to rebuild control.

Marcus watched them.

Analyzed.

Then—

He saw something.

A delay.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But real.

Realization

"They're not instant anymore," he said.

Elena blinked.

"What?"

Marcus pointed at the projections.

"There's lag."

Elena's eyes widened.

"…That means—"

"They're thinking."

Shift in Power

The system wasn't predicting anymore.

Not perfectly.

It was processing.

And processing—

Takes time.

Marcus stepped forward again.

More confident now.

Because for the first time—

He had something the system didn't.

Freedom.

Cut — Cross

Cross leaned slightly forward.

Eyes narrowing just a fraction.

"He found the delay," someone said.

Cross didn't respond.

But inside—

He understood the implication.

"Prepare adaptive override," he said quietly.

Back to Marcus

The system surged again.

More projections.

More possible futures.

Trying to overwhelm him.

Elena covered her head slightly.

"There's too many—"

Marcus didn't flinch.

Didn't react.

Instead—

He closed his eyes.

Elena froze.

"…Marcus?"

Internal Shift

No projections.

No system.

Just silence.

For the first time since everything started—

Marcus wasn't reacting to anything.

He wasn't thinking about the system.

He was thinking for himself.

Decision

He opened his eyes.

And moved.

Fast.

Direct.

Toward the center.

System Failure

The projections couldn't keep up.

Paths overlapped.

Conflicted.

Collapsed.

The system tried to correct—

But the delay—

Was too much.

Cut — Cross

The entire board lit up.

Errors cascading.

"Predictive collapse detected!"

Silence followed.

Cross exhaled slowly.

"…So this is what you've become," he said under his breath.

Back to Marcus

Marcus reached the center.

The heart of the core.

Everything slowed.

The system dimmed slightly.

Almost—

Like it was watching him.

Waiting.

Elena stepped up beside him.

"…What now?"

Marcus looked at the data around him.

The patterns.

The flow.

Then—

He said something simple.

"We change it."

Final Beat

He reached out.

Toward the data.

Not to destroy.

But to interfere.

To rewrite.

And the moment his hand touched the system—

Everything went silent.
