James joined them on the rooftop midway through the second day's test, studying the collection tank with an eye already running the unit economics. "What's the unit cost, roughly, once we're past prototype stage?"

"I don't think it is at all, no."

"What are you suggesting instead?"

"And a free humanitarian partnership changes that."

"It doesn't erase the government's legitimate technical interest. It changes the political weather around it substantially. A man who just gave away technology capable of solving water scarcity for millions of people, at zero cost, purely for the good it does, is a much harder man to quietly restrict or classify without real public consequence. This isn't cynical, for what it's worth — I wouldn't suggest it if I didn't also believe it's simply the right thing to do with a technology this significant. But I'd be lying if I told you the political capital wasn't also real, and worth naming plainly rather than pretending the goodwill is accidental."

"Walk me through the mechanics. What does WaterAid actually get, and what happens if a manufacturer later wants to build on top of this without your involvement?"

"WaterAid gets full technology transfer — schematics, manufacturing guidance, deployment support from our engineering team as needed, no royalty obligation of any kind. Torres would draft the transfer with a narrow field-of-use restriction: humanitarian deployment only, non-commercial. If a manufacturer later wants to build a commercial version for markets that can actually pay, that's a separate license, on separate terms, and nothing about the WaterAid partnership limits your ability to negotiate that deal on your own terms whenever it arrives." Elena tapped her notes. "This is the version of the strategy that protects both purposes at once — genuine humanitarian impact, and a commercial pathway that stays entirely open for later, if and when it makes sense."

"What if nobody ever wants the commercial version? What if this stays purely humanitarian, forever?"

"Then you'll have given away one of the most significant humanitarian technologies of the decade and asked for nothing in return except the good it did. I don't think that's a failure mode, Mohamed. I think that's exactly the kind of outcome most people who talk about wanting to change the world never actually choose when the real opportunity to choose it finally arrives." Elena's voice carried a rare warmth underneath the professional register. "I'll draft the transfer agreement to protect you on liability without restricting their deployment. "Which regions were you thinking of, specifically?" Mohamed asked, the question arriving with more urgency than he expected, the same instinct for the concrete over the abstract that had carried him through every previous test this extraordinary stretch had demanded of him.

"Parts of the Sahel, first. Sub-Saharan communities where groundwater's increasingly unreliable and traditional wells run dry more months of the year than they used to. "Six months, if your team can support the initial installations directly. A year, if we're training our own field engineers from scratch on technology this novel." Adeyemi looked up from her tablet. "I have to ask, because I'd be failing my own organization if I didn't — why give this away? Companies your size, with technology this significant, usually want either a licensing fee or, at minimum, a very large, very public donation announcement. You offered neither."

Mohamed considered the question honestly, aware of Elena standing nearby, aware that the honest answer served both the genuine and the strategic reasons at once without needing to separate them. "That's a rare answer in this line of work, genuinely rare."

"Maybe. I've had a rare two years to arrive at it, one careful, ordinary decision at a time, none of which felt rare while I was actually living inside it."

Adeyemi studied him a moment, the same recalibrating stillness Mohamed had watched cross so many faces over this extraordinary stretch, and extended her hand with something that felt, this time, like genuine warmth rather than professional courtesy. "Elena thinks it also happens to be excellent political timing, given everything else happening with the government."

"I believe both things can be true without either one being less genuine. You've built four products that made you wealthy and one that you're giving away for free, at exactly the moment doing so protects you politically. That's not cynical. That's just good judgment, applied to a situation that happened to reward it twice over." Danielle reached for his hand, the gesture worn now into something closer to ritual than event. "I keep thinking about the actual people this reaches. Somewhere, someone's going to have clean water who's never had it, because you decided a folding chair and a legal pad were worth two years of your life. I don't think you let yourself feel the size of that often enough."

"I try to. Some days it's easier than others."

"Can I tell you something that occurred to me, listening to you describe the WaterAid meeting?" Danielle set down her fork, giving the thought its full weight.

"Go ahead."

"You asked Adeyemi which regions specifically. Not as a courtesy question. You actually wanted to know, the same way you wanted to know exactly how contaminated the Ohio River water was before you trusted your own device to clean it. I think that's the actual throughline of everything you've built — you don't get satisfied with an abstraction. You need the specific place, the specific person, the specific gallon of water somebody's family didn't have yesterday and will have tomorrow. "I hadn't thought about it that plainly. I think you're right, though."

"I usually am, about you specifically. I've had two years of careful, close research on the subject." She smiled, easy and warm, and reached for his hand again. "I want to ask you something, and I want you to actually sit with it instead of answering quickly the way you sometimes do when a question touches the parts of yourself you're still working out."

"Okay."

"Does giving this one away change anything about how you think about the eventual big reveal? The door?" Danielle asked it carefully, watching him as she did. "I only ask because tonight you gave away something extraordinary and asked for nothing back except the good it did. I wonder if some part of you is quietly practicing for a bigger version of exactly that same choice."

Mohamed considered the question a while before answering, the specific honesty she'd earned the right to over two years of exactly this kind of candor. "Maybe. I hadn't consciously connected the two, but I think you might be seeing something true before I've fully let myself see it. Giving away the water harvester didn't cost me anything I actually needed. Telling you and everyone else the whole truth about where any of this comes from — that one still feels like it might cost me something I'm not ready to lose."

"What, specifically, do you think you'd lose?"

"I don't fully know. Maybe nothing. Maybe the version of myself that gets to be extraordinary on my own quiet terms, instead of extraordinary in a way the whole world gets to have an opinion about." "Then maybe the big door isn't as far away as it's felt for two years. Maybe you're just quietly building the courage for it, one honest choice at a time, the same patient way you've built literally everything else, one careful step following naturally from the last." Danielle squeezed his hand, warm and certain. "I'm not rushing you. I want to be clear about that. I just wanted you to notice what I noticed tonight, in case it matters to you the way I think it might."

"It matters. Thank you for seeing it before I did."

Neither of them said much after that. Something had shifted tonight, and Mohamed suspected they both felt it: the company's story had stopped being only about what he'd built. It was becoming, in some small permanent way, a story about who it had helped. He wondered how much longer the truth would keep waiting behind that same door — and whether it might eventually follow the same generous path out.
