Instead, he inhabits the form of Caine Pendragon, a Sequence 9 Lawyer of the Black Emperor pathway, whose carefully prepared notes, encoded memories, and hidden ritual circle suggest a deliberate succession.

Guided by the prior occupant's meticulous records and an enigmatic entity sealed within a warped mirror—a void containing a single, patient point of cold purple—Caine masters Cogitation and awakens Spirit Vision. He perceives the second spiritual layer of reality: the glowing Ether Bodies of the living, the residue of past presences, and the anchored ritual circle carved into the floor beneath his feet.

As the anchor for a three-part ritual sequence whose first stage has already been completed, Caine must now confront the second: advancement to Sequence 8, Barbarian. The transition demands more than intellectual understanding; it requires genuine surrender to the existing order of rules and systems—a concept that clashes with the Lawyer's instinctive drive to perceive, exploit, and ultimately master them.
