Chapter 23 - The People Who Knew His Name

The doors opened slowly.

Not dramatic.

Not rushed.

Just deliberate like whoever stood behind them had all the time in the world.

Adrian didn't slow down.

He walked straight toward the entrance, his expression calm, his steps steady. The gravel path crunched under his shoes, out of place against everything else that was polished and perfect.

He could feel it now.

Eyes.

Not just the guards from earlier.

More.

Hidden. Controlled. Watching.

"…Yeah," he muttered. "Definitely not poor."

The moment he stepped onto the marble at the entrance, the doors were fully open.

And there they were.

---

The first person he noticed was the man standing in the center.

Tall.

Straight posture.

Dressed in a simple black suit—not flashy, but the kind that fit too well to be cheap. His hair was dark, neatly kept, with faint strands of gray at the sides that didn't weaken him—they sharpened him.

His face was calm.

Too calm.

Sharp jawline. Focused eyes. The kind of gaze that didn't move unless it needed to.

But what stood out wasn't any of that.

It was the weight.

Not power like what Adrian felt from Lirael or Selene.

Different.

Controlled authority.

The kind that didn't need to prove itself.

Elias Cole.

Adrian didn't need to be told.

He just knew.

---

Next to him stood a woman.

She looked… gentle.

At first.

Long dark hair that fell naturally over her shoulders. Soft features. Pale skin that seemed almost untouched by time. Her eyes were warm—but there was something behind them.

Something quiet.

Something ancient.

She wore a simple dress, elegant without trying.

Rose.

His mother.

But the moment Adrian looked at her closely—

He felt it.

Faint.

Hidden.

But unmistakable.

Blood.

Not human.

Not fully.

---

Leaning casually against the side pillar was a girl.

She looked about his age.

Maybe a little younger.

Long hair tied loosely, slightly messy on purpose. Her eyes were bright—playful, sharp, always watching something.

She was smiling.

Of course she was.

But it wasn't just teasing anymore.

There was awareness behind it now.

Danger, even.

Hannah.

His sister.

She pushed herself off the pillar and waved slightly.

"Wow," she said. "You actually made it."

Same voice.

Same tone.

But not the same person he thought he knew.

---

Adrian stopped a few steps away from them.

Silence stretched.

No one rushed.

No one explained.

So Adrian spoke first.

"…So," he said, glancing around once more, "this is what 'we're broke' looks like."

Hannah snorted.

Rose sighed softly.

Elias didn't react.

Adrian's eyes settled on his father.

"…You going to explain," he said, "or should I just keep guessing?"

A pause.

Then Elias stepped forward.

Measured.

Controlled.

When he stopped, there was still distance between them.

Not physical.

Something else.

"…You awakened," Elias said.

No greeting.

No "how are you."

Just that.

Adrian let out a quiet breath.

"Yeah," he said. "Funny how that happens when people stop hiding things from you."

Silence.

Rose stepped forward slightly. "Adrian—"

He didn't look at her.

"Don't," he said.

Not loud.

But firm.

She stopped.

Hannah tilted her head slightly, watching him with more interest now.

"…You're different," she said.

Adrian glanced at her briefly.

"Yeah," he replied. "Turns out knowing the truth does that."

Elias didn't interrupt.

He just observed.

Then his gaze shifted.

Past Adrian.

To the people behind him.

Lirael.

Selene.

Niamh.

Kael.

The air changed slightly.

Recognition.

Calculation.

"…You formed bonds quickly," Elias said.

Adrian followed his gaze.

"…Yeah," he said. "Apparently I'm efficient like that."

Hannah smiled wider. "That's one way to describe it."

Rose looked uneasy now.

Elias remained calm.

Then—

"You brought them into the estate," Elias said.

Not a question.

A statement.

Adrian looked back at him.

"They came with me."

"That was not authorized."

Adrian's expression didn't change.

"Neither was lying to me for my entire life."

Silence.

Heavy.

Hannah's smile faded just a little.

Rose closed her eyes briefly.

Elias didn't react.

But the air tightened.

"…You were protected," Elias said.

Adrian let out a short laugh.

"Yeah? From what?"

Elias met his gaze directly now.

"From becoming this."

Adrian's eyes darkened slightly.

"…Too late."

Another silence.

Then

Hannah stepped forward, breaking the tension.

"Okay, this is getting boring," she said casually. "Are we going to stand here pretending this is normal, or are we actually going to talk?"

Adrian glanced at her.

"…You knew," he said.

Not a question.

Hannah shrugged slightly.

"I suspected," she said. "Didn't know when you'd wake up though."

Adrian stared at her for a second.

Then nodded once.

"…Good to know."

Rose spoke again, softer this time.

"We wanted to tell you."

Adrian didn't respond.

Elias did.

"It was not the right time."

Adrian looked back at him.

"And now it is?"

A pause.

Then

"No," Elias said.

That answer hung in the air.

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

"…Then why am I here?"

Elias took a step forward.

Just one.

But this time

The weight behind it was different.

Serious.

Focused.

"Because," Elias said, "you are no longer hidden."

Silence.

Then he added

"And everything that was waiting for that moment…"

A faint shift in the air.

Even Lirael reacted slightly.

"…has already begun moving."

Adrian didn't look away.

"…Yeah," he said quietly. "I noticed."

Hannah crossed her arms, watching him closely.

"So," she said, "what are you going to do about it?"

Adrian exhaled slowly.

Then

For the first time since arriving

He stepped forward.

Not as a son.

Not as someone confused.

But as someone who had already made a decision.

"…I'm going to handle it," he said.

Calm.

Cold.

Certain.

Elias studied him for a moment.

Then nodded once.

"Good."

A pause.

Then

"Because from this point on," Elias said, "you are no longer just part of this family."

Adrian's eyes didn't change.

"…I figured."

Elias finished

"You represent it."

Silence.

Heavy.

Final.

And somewhere beyond the estate walls

The world kept shifting.

Because now

Adrian wasn't hidden anymore.

And everyone who mattered…

Had started paying attention.
