Chapter 26 - CHAPTER 26: THE GATHERING STORM

CHAPTER 26: THE GATHERING STORM

The next joint exercise was announced at dawn: a large-scale rift containment simulation involving multiple teams working in loose coordination across an expanded training zone. Elite and Upper students were to form mixed groups, with the primary objective being to contain a major simulated breach and neutralize the central Rift Sovereign before it could destabilize the entire field. Communication between teams was encouraged but not mandatory. Real mana expenditure, real risk of injury, healers on standby.

Yang's team assembled at the staging area as the sun rose higher. Tor checked the straps on his shield, Mira tested her bowstring with quiet focus, Cheng balanced his spear with a faint crackle of lightning along the shaft, and Yuan stood with her greatsword sheathed across her back. The scar on her arm had faded further, but she still touched it occasionally, a small unconscious gesture.

The air carried the sharp metallic tang of active rift wards and the faint ozone of charged runes. Instructor Garrick's gravel voice carried across the field as he addressed the assembled students.

"This is not a simple patrol. The simulation will escalate rapidly. Contain the breach, neutralize the primary entity, and stabilize the rift. Teams operate with limited oversight. Coordinate where it makes sense. Begin when the barrier drops."

The massive rune barrier around the expanded simulation zone shimmered and expanded, enclosing several acres of forested hills, rocky outcrops, and shallow caves. Violet energy crackled at the center where the simulated major rift had been projected. The ground trembled as the first wave of monsters materialized—larger packs of level-28 shadow wolves and dense clusters of acid slimes pouring from the violet tear.

Yang's team moved without hesitation. Tor took point, shield raised to create an earthen barrier that slowed the initial rush. Mira climbed a rocky outcrop and unleashed wind-tipped arrows that pierced multiple wolves mid-leap. Cheng lunged forward with Storm Breaker thrusts, lightning chaining between targets. Yuan's flames roared outward in controlled arcs, burning away slime clusters before they could close distance.

Yang stayed mobile, using Shadow Step to flank stragglers and Devouring Strike to share vitality when minor injuries occurred. The rhythm felt natural now—each member anticipating the others' movements with growing ease.

The second wave escalated. Larger rift horrors pushed through—tall, amorphous entities with dozens of void-barbed tentacles. One horror latched onto Tor's barrier, cracking the stone. Another swept toward Mira on her high ground, forcing her to drop and roll. A barbed tip grazed Cheng's shoulder, injecting numbing void energy that made his lightning flicker.

Yuan reacted first, flames surging to burn away the tentacle threatening Mira. Yang Shadow Stepped to Cheng's side, Devouring Strike pulling the corrupting energy from the wound and restoring feeling. He then activated Shadow Domain, the living darkness spreading in a controlled radius that slowed the horrors and amplified his teammates' abilities within the field.

Cheng's lightning brightened noticeably. Yuan's flames pushed back harder. Tor's barrier reformed stronger. Mira's arrows gained extra piercing force. The team pressed the advantage until Cheng's final lightning thrust and Yuan's concentrated Ashfall Inferno shattered the largest horror. The simulated rift pulsed violently but held.

The third wave brought the primary entity—a massive Rift Sovereign, level-38, with a core that warped space and tentacles that could phase through solid matter. The creature emerged with a roar that shook the ground, its presence making the air feel heavier.

Tor charged forward to draw aggro. "I'll hold it! Focus the core!"

Mira climbed higher, loosing arrows that sought weak points. Cheng unleashed sustained lightning storms that cracked the outer shell. Yuan hurled wave after wave of flames, trying to force the creature to solidify.

The Sovereign adapted instantly. Tentacles phased through Tor's barrier, striking him across the chest and sending him skidding. One barbed tip caught Mira's leg, the numbing void energy spreading faster. Cheng's lightning was partially absorbed, causing feedback that made his arm spasm.

Yang moved through the chaos. Shadow Step carried him to Mira first, Devouring Strike clearing the corrupting energy. He then Shadow Stepped to Tor, sharing vitality to stabilize him. Finally, he reached Cheng, pulling the feedback energy from his arm and steadying the lightning flow.

With the team stabilized, Yang expanded Shadow Domain to its maximum radius. The living darkness swallowed the battlefield, slowing the Sovereign's phasing tentacles and amplifying every teammate's ability. Cheng's lightning became a sustained storm that cracked the core. Yuan's flames burned hotter, forcing the creature to solidify. Tor's barrier held firm. Mira's arrows struck with pinpoint accuracy.

The Sovereign roared in fury, tentacles lashing wildly. One phased strike nearly caught Yuan, but she rolled clear, flames flaring in defiance. Cheng seized the opening, driving his spear deep into the cracked core. Lightning exploded from within. Yuan followed with a final, concentrated Ashfall Inferno that poured into the wound. The core shattered with a deafening crack.

The simulated rift collapsed. The rune barrier powered down.

Silence fell for a heartbeat before the team exhaled collectively. Tor lowered his shield, breathing hard. "We held. Your domain and the shares kept us together when it counted."

Mira tested her leg, fully healed. "We moved like one unit. Never felt that in a big simulation before."

Cheng leaned on his spear, lightning humming low. He looked at Yang. "You kept pulling us through every time the Sovereign hit hardest. Could have focused on yourself. You didn't."

Yuan sheathed her greatsword, flames dying to faint embers. She met Yang's eyes, the scar on her arm visible in the morning light. "Same choice again. In the Abyss, in the duel, in every patrol and exercise. You keep choosing to pull us through instead of letting us fall." Her voice dropped. "Mother's latest hawk demanded we denounce you publicly. We burned it without replying."

The four of them stood together as the simulation zone cleared. The weight of the manor's pressure, the duel, and the growing rift between old expectations and new reality hung between them, but the silence felt different now—less like suspicion and more like the quiet before a shared decision.

Tor clapped Yang on the shoulder once. "Good work. Same team for the next one?"

Mira nodded. "Same team."

Cheng and Yuan exchanged a glance. Cheng spoke first. "Same team."

Yang gave a single nod. "Same team."

They walked back toward the spires together, the morning sun warming their backs. Students from other teams were dispersing, conversations rising about the intensity of the simulation. Whispers followed Yang's group—respect mixed with curiosity about the shadow user whose power kept turning escalating threats into coordinated victories.

In his room later that afternoon, Yang stood on the balcony once more. The catalyst herbs continued their work, shadow mana flowing smoother than ever. The three reapers waited silently in the Vault, ready at a thought.

The academy continued its lessons in survival through escalating trials.

He continued teaching consequence through quiet, consistent choices.

The siblings were no longer simple obstacles or hesitant allies.

They were becoming something the Lionheart manor had never planned for.

A fracture in the old story that was starting to look like the beginning of a new one.

And when the final crack came, the shadows would be ready to step through.
