The singer's lips were red.
That was the first thing — the only thing — visible in the dim warmth of the hall as the music began.
A woman's voice, low and unhurried, finding its way through the candlelight and the cigarette smoke and the polite murmur of expensive conversation like water finding the path of least resistance.
In corridors where candlelight forgets,
A whisper clings to dust and silhouettes,
The clock unmakes each second that it keeps,
And shadows speak in riddles when one sleeps.
The hall was large — twenty tables at least, arranged around a central stage that sat slightly elevated above the floor, catching the light from three chandeliers that someone had spent considerable money on.
The crowd was exactly what Eleanor had expected: young, well-dressed, carrying themselves with the particular ease of people who had never had to think about whether they could afford the room they were standing in.
She had arrived early enough to find a seat near the back.
The singer's face emerged gradually from the stage lighting as the second verse began — dark eyes that held the audience the way still water holds a reflection, neither demanding nor releasing.
A name engraved in glass, then erased in breath,
A vow that tastes of velvet, laced with death.
Around Eleanor, the conversation had stopped.
She hadn't noticed the exact moment it happened.
One minute the room had been doing what rooms full of wealthy young people always did — performing itself, loudly, for its own benefit — and the next it had simply gone quiet, the way a fire goes quiet when it runs out of wood to burn.
Faces turned toward the stage. Hands stilled around glasses. Someone nearby exhaled slowly, as though releasing the same air back in the room. they'd been holding without knowing it.
Oh, dance with me where roses never bloom,

The truth is dressed in lace and quiet deceit,
And time itself falls dead beneath our feet.
The applause, when it came, was immediate and genuine — the kind that doesn't wait for permission. Eleanor rose with the rest of the room and clapped, watching the singer take her bow with the particular grace of someone who had done this many times and had not yet grown tired of it.
She was beautiful. That was the only word that fit without forcing.
Eleanor filed it away as a professional observation and sat back down.
The hall reorganized itself in the way of parties — clusters forming and reforming, people finding their orbits around the people they wanted to impress or be seen with. Eleanor moved to the bar, found an empty stool at the far end, and settled in with a glass of something amber that she had no intention of drinking more than was socially necessary.
From here she could see most of the room.
She found her primary target without difficulty.
Eric Everleigh was the kind of person rooms organized themselves around without being asked — tall, dark-haired, dressed with the studied casualness of someone whose tailor was very expensive, currently in the process of greeting a heavyset man in a coat that was slightly too warm for the season.
She watched.
"Sir Leonard! It's been too long. Let me get you a drink—"
The heavyset man — Leonard, apparently — went visibly pale beneath his considerable perspiration.
"I couldn't possibly allow His Lordship to—"
"What now?" Everleigh's expression shifted into something that was technically still a smile. "You're refusing a drink from me? At my own party?"
"No, no, I would never dare — I simply meant—"
"You simply meant to insult me in my own home."
"I—"
"I'm joking, Leonard."
The smile returned to its original configuration.
"Go enjoy yourself. The wine from the eastern cellar is particularly good tonight."
Sir Leonard retreated at a pace that was technically dignified.
Everleigh turned back to his table — three men, varying ages, all carrying themselves with the relaxed confidence of people who had known each other long enough to stop performing — and the laughter started before he'd even sat down.
Everleigh sat down on his table with the particular satisfaction of a man who has successfully ended a conversation he never wanted to have.
His three companions looked up.
"The man sweats more every time I see him," said the one on his left — George, dark-haired, younger than the rest, with the sharp eyes of someone who found most things beneath him and was quietly pleased about it.
"Is it a medical condition, do you think? Or is it specifically you?"
"Specifically me," Everleigh said, picking up his glass. "I bring it out in him."
Laughter from the table.
"You invited him," George said. "That's what I don't understand. Pigs get few money, pigs think he's royalty."
"And miss this?" Everleigh gestured vaguely in the direction Sir Leonard had retreated. "George, my friend — that's the difference between you and me. Even pigs have their uses."
More laughter. Someone refilled glasses without being asked.
The fourth man at the table — the one who hadn't spoken yet — leaned back in his chair with the ease of someone entirely comfortable taking up space. He was older than the others by several years, and the scar that ran from his left cheekbone down past his collar marked him immediately as someone whose life had at some point involved something more serious than parties.
He had come from the north. The Moonviel family, one of the border houses, known for things Eleanor had read about in garrison reports and garrison reports alone.
He had been watching the room since before Eleanor had arrived.
"Where did whore go?" Everleigh said, scanning the hall.
"Left after the set," George replied.
"I didn't tell her she could leave."
"She's a performer, Eric. She performed. She left."
Everleigh set his glass down with a sound that was just slightly harder than necessary. "Someone should have told her the evening wasn't over."
The man from Moonviel picked up his drink without looking at anyone in particular.
"The difference between you and me," he said, with the flat delivery of someone who had decided to find something funny, "is that I pay after. That way they don't leave until I have my fun."
The laughter this time was louder. George nearly choked. Even Everleigh's expression shifted into something more genuine.
"That's—"
He stopped. Shook his head. "That's actually a useful advice."
"I know."
The Moonviel man raised his glass in a small, sardonic toast and drank.
It was George who noticed her first.
He didn't say anything immediately — he simply stopped mid-sentence and looked, with the particular quality of attention that meant something had interrupted whatever he was actually thinking about.
Then he tilted his head slightly in the direction of the bar.
"Who is that?"
The table turned.
At the far end of the bar, on a stool she had clearly chosen for its distance from everyone else, sat a woman in a blue dress who was looking at nothing in particular and turning her glass slowly in her hands.
She was not performing for the room. She was not looking to see who was looking at her. She was simply there, in the middle of everything, entirely self-contained.
Which was, in its own way, more conspicuous than anything else in the room.
Everleigh looked at her for approximately three seconds.
Then he stood up and straightened his jacket.
"Excuse me, gentlemen."
"Oh, for the love of god" George started.
"This is my party,"
Everleigh said, with the injured dignity of a man making a completely unreasonable point as though it were obvious. "It would be rude not to introduce myself."
"Oh, Fuck off." said the man from Moonviel, pleasantly.
The sentiment was echoed from multiple directions, with varying levels of creativity. Everleigh accepted all of it with a slight bow, adjusted his cuffs, and walked toward the bar with the slightly uneven gait of someone who had been drinking for two hours and was managing it with partial success.
Eleanor looked away.
She turned her glass slowly on the bar and let her eyes move across the room in the unhurried pattern she'd trained herself into over years of this kind of work. Note the exits. Note the staff. Note which guests were drinking enough to become careless and which ones were nursing the same glass they'd started with. Note the doors that led somewhere other than the main hall.
There were three.
One behind the stage, almost certainly for performers and staff. One to the left of the bar, guarded by a man in household livery who had the posture of someone with actual training. And one at the far end of the room, past the last table, half-hidden behind a column — unguarded, currently, though she had seen two staff members pass through it in the last twenty minutes.
She filed all of this and went back to her drink.
She heard him coming before he arrived.
Not literally — the room was loud enough that individual footsteps were lost in it. But there was a particular quality to the change in ambient noise that happened when Everleigh moved through a space, a slight gravitational shift in the attention of everyone nearby, that was as distinctive as a calling card.
He settled onto the stool beside her.
Eleanor did not look up.
"You don't seem to be enjoying the wine."
She said nothing.
A brief pause. Then, with the self-aware humor of someone who was used to adjusting: "Last I checked, the bar was for drinking."
"I am drinking," Eleanor said, without looking at him.
"Slowly."
"I drink slowly."
He flagged down the barman and ordered something she didn't catch. She was aware of him looking at her in the way people look at something they've decided they want.
"Have we met?" he asked. "I don't recognize you, and I usually recognize people."
"No," she said.
"You're certain."
"I think I would remember."
He laughed at that — genuinely, she thought, not performance. "Fair point. I'm name is Eric, Can I ask the lady for her name?"
She finally turned to look at him.
The reaction she produced was one she had practiced: a beat of blankness, then dawning recognition, then the slightly flustered recalibration of someone who has just realized they've been rude to a person of significantly higher social standing than themselves.
"I — forgive me, My Lord, I didn't realize—" She stood and inclined her head. "I apologize. I've been told I'm not at my best at gatherings."
"Sit down, please." He waved a hand. "I came over here precisely because you didn't seem to be performing for anyone. It's refreshing." He tilted his head. "You're not from the capital."
"Is it that obvious?"
"Only to someone who's met everyone from the capital." He picked up his drink. "So who are you?"
"Mary," she said. "Mary Lunaris. My father is Baron Kristin Lunaris — we're from the eastern border."
"Eastern border." He considered this. "That's a considerable journey."
"My father arranged a match," she said, letting something slightly resigned enter her voice. "I told him I would agree to meet the family, but that I wanted to see the capital first. He gave me three months." A short, self-deprecating sound.
"I may have attended more parties than was strictly necessary."
"And what do you think of it?" He was watching her with the focused attention of someone who had decided this conversation was worth having. "The capital."
"It's very large," Eleanor said.
He laughed again. "That's the most honest answer I've heard tonight."
She picked up her glass. Let the silence sit for a moment, the way silences sat when they were working in your favor.
"You know," Everleigh said, setting his glass down, "it's rather loud in here."
"It is," Eleanor agreed.
"Believe it or not, there are quieter parts in this place."
She looked at him. Let herself seem to consider it — not too long, not too short, the exact duration of someone making a decision they'd already half-made.
"Lead the way, My Lord," she said.
The corridor was quieter. Then the next one quieter still.
Eleanor counted doors and memorized turnings as Everleigh guided her through the house with the proprietary ease of someone who had never needed to think about where anything was. She noted two guards — stationed, not patrolling — and a staircase that went down rather than up, which likely meant a basement level she hadn't accounted for.
She filed it all.
Everleigh's room was on the second floor, at the end of a corridor lined with paintings she didn't have time to look at properly.
He opened the door and gestured her inside with a courtesy that was entirely surface-level, the kind of manners that are applied like a coat of paint over something else.
She went in.
The room was large, as expected. A writing desk near the window. Wardrobes along one wall. A fireplace with something burning low in it. And on the wall beside the desk, a painting — landscapes, hunting scenes, the usual inheritance of wealthy families — and beneath it, a low cabinet with a brass lock.
She had the room mapped in approximately four seconds.
She was still facing away from him when she heard the particular sound of someone removing their jacket.
Eleanor turned.
Everleigh met her eyes with the expression of a man who had stopped pretending some time ago. "You don't need to keep performing," he said. "We both know why you're here."
She said nothing.
He took a step toward her. "Consider it an honor, if it helps."
She let him take another step. Let him close most of the distance between them. Let him reach out.
The water came from the glass on his desk — the one she had catalogued the moment she entered and identified as her nearest resource. It moved fast, faster than anything that looked like water should move, and it was around his head before he finished drawing breath to shout.
He tried anyway.
The sound that came out was not a shout. It was muffled, waterlogged, the furious noise of someone who suddenly cannot do the thing they were trying to do. His hands came up — both of them, scrabbling at the bubble of water that had enclosed his head from crown to collar — and found nothing to grip. The water moved with him, accommodating and immovable, like an argument you can't get outside of.
His eyes, visible through the water, went from rage to confusion to something more animal.
Eleanor watched, and counted, and when she reached the number she had decided in her heqd, she let the water fall.
Everleigh dropped with it.
She caught him before he hit the floor — barely, and inelegantly, and she was going to have a bruise on her forearm from the effort — and got him onto the bed with the kind of functional efficiency that had nothing to do with consideration and everything to do with not leaving evidence of a struggle.
She straightened up.
Looked at the room.
Started.
The desk first. Two drawers — correspondence in the left, accounts in the right, nothing that matched her description. She went through both quickly and replaced everything in order.
The cabinet with the brass lock took forty seconds. She had three picks with her and the second one worked. Inside: a cashbox, a leather folder of letters she photographed mentally for later, and a ledger.
She opened the ledger.
Wrong one. Household accounts — staff wages, wine deliveries, tailor's bills. She replaced it and kept looking.
The wardrobe on the left held clothes and a locked box at the bottom that turned out to contain nothing she wanted.
The one on the right had a false back — she found it by sound, the slightly hollow tone of the panel when she pressed it — and behind the false back was a shelf with three items on it.
Two items she catalogued and left.
The third was a slim, cloth-bound book with no title on the spine.
She opened it.
Names. Dates. Figures. Some of the names she recognized. Most of the figures were larger than they had any reason to be given the stated purpose of the transactions. And in the margins, in a handwriting different from the main text — smaller, more careful — a series of notations in a shorthand she didn't immediately recognize but could work with.
This was it.
She was already reaching into the hidden pocket of her dress for her copying materials when she heard the footsteps.
Not from inside the room. From the corridor — two sets, unhurried, moving in the direction of this door specifically. Staff making rounds, possibly, or guards who had noticed Everleigh's absence from his own party and had come to check.
Eleanor looked at the book in her hands.
She had copied three pages. There were at least fifteen more that mattered. She could see from the dates that the entries she needed most were toward the back, which she hadn't reached.
The footsteps slowed outside the door.
She put the book back exactly as she had found it. Replaced the false back panel. Closed the wardrobe.
The lock on the cabinet she could not relock from the outside — she left it and moved away from it, putting the desk between herself and the door.
A knock. Then, without waiting for an answer: "My Lord? The Harrington family has arrived. They were asking for you."
Silence from the bed.
A pause. Then the door handle moved.
Eleanor was already at the window.
It opened outward — she'd checked that when she came in, along with everything else — and the ledge outside was narrow but manageable. Two floors up. The garden below was dark but not completely dark, and the ivy on this side of the house was old enough to be structural.
The door opened.
She was already outside, the window pulled most of the way closed behind her, pressed flat against the stonework with her fingers in the ivy and the cold night air hitting her face and the sound of voices inside the room beginning to rise in confusion.
She waited.
Then, when the voices moved toward the bed rather than the window, she started climbing down.
The dress was not designed for this.
She reached the garden with a torn hem, a graze along her left palm, and three pages of copied notes she was going to need to work with tonight because she hadn't gotten the rest.
She stood in the dark garden and looked up at the lit window above her.
Three pages.
Everleigh would wake with a headache and no memory of exactly how the evening had gone wrong. He would find his cabinet unlocked and spend the next week wondering. The book would still be there — she hadn't taken it, which meant she hadn't tipped her hand completely, which meant she could come back.
If she could find a reason to come back.
She straightened her dress as much as it was willing to be straightened, pulled her coat from where she'd stashed it behind a garden hedge on her way in, and walked toward the gate.
Three pages.
It would have to be enough for tonight.
