Chapter 160 - CHAPTER 160:THE OFFER

Damien made a decision that would change everything.

Not about the Syndicate.

Not about the lawsuits.

About the future.

He was going to build something that couldn't be destroyed.

Not a building.

A family.

A law firm filled with people who had everything to prove and nothing to lose.

---

The idea came to him in the middle of the night.

Christabel was asleep beside him. Her hand was on his chest. Her breath was slow and even.

He couldn't sleep.

He was thinking about Sterling. About Eli. About the two hundred million dollars he had already invested.

It wasn't enough.

Money wasn't enough.

He needed people. Hungry people. Talented people. People who had been overlooked, underestimated, buried under debt.

People who would be loyal because he gave them a chance when no one else would.

---

He woke Christabel.

Not gently.

He never did anything gently.

"I have an idea."

She opened her eyes.

"It's 3 AM."

"I know."

"Your ideas at 3 AM are either brilliant or insane."

"Same thing."

"Different intention."

He told her. About the law firm. About the student loans. About the building. About the apartments. About the security. About the future.

She listened.

She didn't interrupt.

When he was done, she was quiet for a long moment.

"How much?"

"Four hundred million."

"Total?"

"To start."

She stared at him.

"You want to spend four hundred million dollars on a law firm?"

"I want to spend four hundred million dollars on a family."

---

She kissed him.

Not softly.

The way she kissed him when she was proud.

"I love you."

"I know."

"I love you in ways I didn't know I was capable of."

He touched her face.

"I know. Because I love you the same way."

---

The next morning, Damien called Sterling.

"I need you to find me people."

"What kind of people?"

"The best kind. The hungry kind. The ones with student loans and nothing else. The ones who have been overlooked because they didn't go to the right schools or know the right people."

Sterling was quiet for a moment.

"You want me to find diamonds in the rough."

"I want you to find the future."

---

The search took weeks.

Sterling and Eli interviewed dozens of candidates.

Not at the office. At coffee shops. At libraries. At their homes.

They wanted to see where these people came from. What they had overcome. What they were capable of.

They found a woman named Maya Thompson.

Twenty-four years old. Law school graduate. Two hundred thousand dollars in student debt.

She had been working as a barista. Serving coffee. Dreaming of something more.

They found a man named David Kim.

Twenty-six years old. Law school graduate. One hundred fifty thousand dollars in student debt.

He had been working as a paralegal. Doing the work of a lawyer. Getting paid a fraction of the salary.

They found a woman named Sarah Johnson.

Twenty-five years old. Law school graduate. Three hundred thousand dollars in student debt.

She had been working as a legal aid. Helping people who couldn't afford lawyers. Making almost nothing.

They found a man named James Wilson.

Twenty-seven years old. Law school graduate. Two hundred fifty thousand dollars in student debt.

He had been working as a public defender. Overworked. Underpaid. Burning out.

They found more. Dozens more. Each with a story. Each with debt. Each with potential.

---

The first meeting was held in the conference room of the new building.

Not the old office. The new one. The one Damien was building.

The room was empty. No furniture. No decorations. Just walls and windows and the city beyond.

The candidates sat in folding chairs.

Nervous. Hopeful. Skeptical.

Sterling stood at the front.

No podium. No notes. Just him.

"Thank you for coming," he said.

No one spoke.

"I know you're skeptical. I know you've been promised things before. I know you've been disappointed."

He walked to the window.

Looked out at the city.

"I'm not going to promise you the world. I'm going to give it to you."

---

He turned to face them.

"Here's what Damien Moreau is offering. Not a job. A life."

He counted on his fingers.

"Your student loans will be paid in full. Every dollar. Every debt. Gone."

Maya's breath caught.

"You will earn three to four times what senior partners make at other firms. Not in ten years. Now."

David's eyes widened.

"You will live in a five-story building designed as a five-star hotel. Your own apartment. Your own space. Your own security. Twenty-four seven. For life."

Sarah's hands were shaking.

"Your families will be protected. Your children will be educated. Your parents will be cared for."

James leaned forward.

"You will work on cases that matter. You will defend people who need defending. You will change the world."

---

Sterling walked to the center of the room.

"But there's a catch."

The room went silent.

"You have to be loyal. Not to me. Not to Damien. To each other. To the family we're building. You betray one of us, you betray all of us. And there is no forgiveness for that."

He looked at each face.

"If that scares you, leave now."

No one moved.

"If that excites you, stay. Work. Build. Grow."

---

Maya raised her hand.

"What about the janitor?"

Sterling smiled.

"What about the janitor?"

"Does he get the same benefits?"

"The janitor will have a better life than a senior partner at any other firm. Better pay. Better housing. Better security. Because the janitor is family too."

Maya nodded.

"I'm in."

---

David raised his hand.

"What about our families? Parents? Siblings?"

"They're covered."

"Health insurance?"

"The best."

"Retirement?"

"You'll never need to retire. But if you do, you'll be taken care of."

David nodded.

"I'm in."

---

Sarah raised her hand.

"What about the cases? Will we have to defend people who are guilty?"

"Sometimes."

"Will we have to lie?"

"Never."

"Will we have to compromise our values?"

"No."

Sarah nodded.

"I'm in."

---

James raised his hand.

"What about the work-life balance?"

Sterling laughed.

"There is no balance. There is only the work. But the work will be meaningful. The work will be important. The work will be worth it."

James nodded.

"I'm in."

---

One by one, they said yes.

One by one, they signed the contracts.

One by one, they became family.

---

That night, Christabel put Lena to bed.

Not Damien. Her.

Lena was full of questions.

"Mama, why is Papa happy?"

"Because he helped people."

"What people?"

"People who needed help."

"Like the baby?"

Christabel laughed.

"Like the baby."

---

Damien appeared in the doorway.

"She's asleep?"

"She's dreaming."

"Of what?"

"Of you."

He walked to her.

Took her hand.

"I hired twenty people today."

"I know."

"Their lives are going to change."

"I know."

"Your life is going to change."

She looked at him.

"Already has."

"The one hundred sixteenth week, the new hires moved into the building. Not apartments. Homes. With views of the city. With security that never slept. With hope they had never felt before. And the world took notice."
