Chapter 133 - CHAPTWR 133:THE MORNING AFTER

Christabel woke in the penthouse.

Not in Lenara.

Not on the floor.

In the bed she had shared with Damien for years.

The sheets were soft. The pillows were familiar. The city was bright outside the window.

But everything felt different.

She was different.

---

She lay still for a long time.

Listening to the sounds of the penthouse.

Lena's breathing in the nursery. The hum of the city below. The soft rhythm of Damien's breath beside her.

He was still asleep.

His face was peaceful. Younger somehow. The lines of worry smoothed away.

She watched him.

The sharp lines of his jaw. The dark lashes against his cheeks. The way his lips curved slightly, like he was dreaming of something good.

She loved him.

She loved him so much it terrified her.

But love wasn't enough.

It had never been enough.

---

She slipped out of bed.

Walked to the nursery.

Lena was awake. Sitting up. Playing with a stuffed animal.

"Good morning, little one," Christabel whispered.

Lena looked up.

Her dark eyes widened.

Then she smiled.

The real one.

The one that made everything worth it.

"Bah," Lena said.

"That's right," Christabel said. "Bah."

---

She lifted her daughter from the crib.

Held her against her chest.

Lena's tiny arms wrapped around her neck.

Lena's tiny face pressed against her cheek.

Lena's tiny heartbeat against her own.

"I'm home," Christabel whispered.

Lena cooed.

"I'm not going to leave again."

Lena grabbed her finger.

Held on tight.

"I promise."

---

Damien appeared in the doorway.

"You're up early."

"I couldn't sleep."

"Is everything okay?"

She looked at him.

"I don't know."

---

He walked to her.

Took Lena from her arms.

Laid her in the crib.

Then he took Christabel's hand.

"Come with me."

"Where?"

"The kitchen."

---

He made coffee.

The same coffee he had made a hundred times before.

But this time, he was careful.

Measuring the grounds. Watching the water. Waiting for the perfect moment.

"You're taking a long time," Christabel said.

"I want to get it right."

"It's just coffee."

"It's not just coffee."

---

He poured two cups.

Handed her one.

She took a sip.

It was perfect.

"I love you," he said.

"I know."

"I love you in ways I didn't know I was capable of."

She looked at him.

"I know. Because I love you the same way."

---

They sat at the kitchen island.

The city was waking up.

Lena was playing in the nursery.

"I'm scared," Christabel said.

"Of what?"

"Of this. Of us. Of trying again and failing."

"We're not going to fail."

"How do you know?"

"Because we've survived worse."

---

She set down her cup.

"I hurt you."

"I hurt you too."

"I left."

"You came back."

"I was gone for months."

"You're here now."

---

She was quiet for a moment.

The coffee was warm in her hands.

The city was loud outside the window.

"Why did you wait for me?" she asked.

"Because I love you."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

---

He took her hand.

"I waited because I knew you would come back. Not because you had to. Because you wanted to."

"What if I hadn't?"

"Then I would have waited longer."

"What if I never came back?"

He was quiet for a moment.

"Then I would have waited forever."

---

She started crying.

Not the silent tears.

The kind that came from somewhere deep.

Somewhere that had been hurting for years.

"I don't deserve you."

"You deserve everything."

"I'm broken."

"You're healing."

"Same thing."

"Different intention."

---

Lena cried in the nursery.

Christabel wiped her eyes.

Walked to her daughter.

Lifted her from the crib.

"Hi, baby," she said.

Lena cried.

"I know. Mommy's been gone a long time. Mommy's sorry."

Lena stopped crying.

Looked up at her mother.

"Bah," she said.

Christabel laughed.

The sound was rusty. Broken. But real.

"That's right," she said. "Bah."

---

Damien stood in the doorway.

Watching.

"You're staring," she said.

"I'm admiring."

"Same thing."

"Different intention."

She walked to him.

Lena in her arms.

"I'm not going to leave again."

"I know."

"I'm not going to run again."

"I know."

"I'm going to stay."

He touched her face.

"I know."

---

That afternoon, Dr. Reid came to the penthouse.

Not for a session.

For a visit.

Christabel had called her.

"I need help," Christabel had said.

"With what?"

"Learning how to stay."

---

Dr. Reid sat on the couch.

Christabel sat across from her.

Damien was in the nursery with Lena.

"Tell me about the fear," Dr. Reid said.

"I'm afraid of losing myself again."

"You didn't lose yourself. You went looking for yourself."

"I found pieces."

"Pieces are a start."

---

"What if the pieces don't fit together?"

"Then you find new pieces."

"What if there are no new pieces?"

Dr. Reid leaned forward.

"There are always new pieces. You just have to be willing to look."

---

The session lasted an hour.

Christabel talked.

Dr. Reid listened.

When it was over, Christabel walked to the nursery.

Damien was on the floor.

Lena was in his lap.

Both of them were looking at a book.

"She's learning," Damien said.

"Learning what?"

"To read."

"She's one year old."

"She's advanced."

Christabel laughed.

"She's yours."

"She's ours."

---

That night, Christabel put Lena to bed.

Not Damien. Her.

She read her daughter a story. Not a baby book. A real story. One of her favorites.

"There was a woman who was lost," she read. "She traveled far and wide, looking for herself. But in the end, she found herself at home. In the arms of the people she loved."

Lena stared at her.

"Bah," she said.

"That's right," Christabel said. "Bah."

---

Damien was in the doorway.

"She said it again."

"She said it to me."

"She said it to both of us."

She closed the book.

Set it on the nightstand.

"She's going to be loved."

"She's going to be just like you."

"God help the world."

"God help anyone who tries to take her from us."

---

They stood over the crib together.

Lena was asleep. Her tiny chest rose and fell.

"I'm staying," Christabel said.

"For how long?"

"I don't know."

"A week? A month? A year?"

"I don't know."

"And if I ask you to stay forever?"

She looked at him.

"Then I might say yes."

---

He pulled her into his arms.

Held her tight.

"I love you."

"I know."

"I love you in ways I didn't know I was capable of."

She touched his face.

"I know. Because I love you the same way."
