Chapter 127 - CHAPTER 127:THE RETURN

Christabel returned to the penthouse.

Not because she was ready.

Because Lena needed her.

And some things are more important than healing.

---

The call came at midnight.

Damien's voice was different. Strained. Broken.

"It's Lena."

Christabel's heart stopped.

"What's wrong?"

"She's sick. Fever. Won't stop crying. The doctor is here."

"I'm coming."

---

She didn't pack.

Didn't think.

Didn't hesitate.

She just drove.

The roads were dark. The rain was falling. Her hands were shaking on the wheel.

She had spent weeks trying to find herself.

But in that moment, none of it mattered.

Her daughter needed her.

---

The penthouse was bright.

The nanny was in the hallway. The doctor was in the nursery.

Damien was sitting on the floor.

His back against the wall.

His face in his hands.

"Damien."

He looked up.

His eyes were red.

"She's been crying for hours. Nothing works. The doctor says it's just a virus. But she won't stop."

Christabel knelt in front of him.

"I'm here now."

"I didn't know who else to call."

"You called the right person."

---

She walked into the nursery.

Lena was in her crib.

Her face was red. Her eyes were swollen. Her tiny body was shaking with sobs.

"Hi, baby," Christabel whispered.

Lena cried harder.

"I know. You're sick. You're scared. You don't understand what's happening."

She lifted her daughter from the crib.

Held her against her chest.

"Mommy's here now. Mommy's got you."

---

Lena's crying didn't stop.

But it changed.

Softer. Quieter. Less desperate.

She was still sick. Still scared. Still uncomfortable.

But she knew she was safe.

Christabel rocked her.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

The way she had rocked her when she was a newborn.

The way she had rocked her through a hundred sleepless nights.

"I'm sorry," Christabel whispered. "I'm sorry I wasn't here. I'm sorry I left. I'm sorry I put myself first."

Lena grabbed her finger.

Held on tight.

"I'm not going to leave again. I promise."

---

Damien stood in the doorway.

Watching.

"She stopped crying."

"She's exhausted."

"She stopped crying because of you."

"She stopped crying because she knows she's safe."

He walked to her.

Sat on the floor beside the rocking chair.

"I'm sorry too."

"For what?"

"For not being enough."

"You're enough."

"I couldn't stop her crying."

"Neither could I."

"But you did."

She looked at him.

"We did."

---

Lena fell asleep.

Her tiny chest rose and fell.

Her fingers were still curled around Christabel's.

"She's out," Christabel said.

"She's perfect."

"She's ours."

Damien stood.

Took Lena from her arms.

Laid her in the crib.

Then he walked back to Christabel.

Took her hand.

"Stay."

"Damien—"

"Not for me. For her."

---

She stayed.

Not in the bedroom.

In the nursery.

On the floor.

Beside Lena's crib.

Damien brought her a blanket. A pillow. A glass of water.

"You don't have to sleep on the floor."

"I want to be close to her."

"I understand."

---

He sat beside her.

They leaned against the wall.

Lena slept between them.

Not touching.

Not apart.

Together.

"I've missed you," Damien said.

"I've missed you too."

"I've missed us."

She was quiet for a moment.

"So have I."

---

The next morning, Lena's fever broke.

She woke up hungry. Thirsty. Demanding.

Christabel fed her. Bathed her. Dressed her.

Lena smiled.

The real one.

The one that made everything worth it.

"Bah," Lena said.

"That's right," Christabel said. "Bah."

---

Damien watched from the doorway.

"She said it again."

"She said it to me."

"She said it to both of us."

Christabel looked at him.

"I'm not leaving."

"You're not?"

"I can't."

"Why not?"

"Because she needs me."

"What about what you need?"

She was quiet for a moment.

"She is what I need."

---

That afternoon, Christabel called Dr. Reid.

"I'm not coming back to Lenara."

"Are you sure?"

"My daughter needs me."

"What about what you need?"

Christabel looked at Lena.

Playing on the floor.

Laughing at nothing.

"She is what I need."

---

Dr. Reid was quiet for a moment.

"Sometimes healing looks different than we expect."

"Sometimes it looks like staying."

"Yes."

"Even when it's hard."

"Especially when it's hard."

---

That night, Christabel put Lena to bed.

Not Damien. Her.

She read her daughter a story. Not a baby book. A real story. One of her favorites.

"There was a woman who was lost," she read. "She traveled far and wide, looking for herself. But in the end, she found herself at home. In the arms of the people she loved."

Lena stared at her.

"Bah," she said.

"That's right," Christabel said. "Bah."

---

Damien was in the doorway.

"She said it again."

"She said it to me."

"She said it to both of us."

She closed the book.

Set it on the nightstand.

"She's going to be loved."

"She's going to be just like you."

"God help the world."

"God help anyone who tries to take her from us."

---

They stood over the crib together.

Lena was asleep. Her tiny chest rose and fell.

"I'm staying," Christabel said.

"For how long?"

"I don't know."

"A week? A month? A year?"

"I don't know."

"And if I ask you to stay forever?"

She looked at him.

"Then I might say yes."

---

He pulled her into his arms.

Held her tight.

"I love you."

"I know."

"I love you in ways I didn't know I was capable of."

She touched his face.

"I know. Because I love you the same way."

---

The next morning, Christabel woke before Lena.

Not because the baby was crying. Because she wanted to.

She walked to the nursery.

Stood over the crib.

Lena was sleeping. Her tiny chest rose and fell.

"Good morning, little one," Christabel whispered.

Lena didn't stir.

"Mommy stayed. Mommy's not going to leave again."

She touched Lena's cheek.

"Mommy's home."

---

Damien appeared in the doorway.

"She's awake," he said.

"She's hungry."

"I'll make a bottle."

"She wants to nurse."

He walked to her.

Sat on the floor beside the rocking chair.

"What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking about the future."

"Ours?"

"Everyone's."

He took her hand.

"Then let's build it. Together."

She looked at him.

"Together.
