Chapter 100 - CHAPTER 100:THE SILENCE

Christabel received a letter.

Not from an enemy.

From Anna.

The daughter she had helped.

And the words changed everything.

---

Dear Mrs. Moreau,

I don't know if you remember me. I'm the daughter of the man you destroyed. Alexander Pierce's daughter. The one who ran away.

I'm writing to thank you.

For years, I lived in fear of him. Even from across the ocean. Even with a different name. Even with a different life. I was always looking over my shoulder. Always waiting for him to find me. Always waiting for him to hurt me again.

You set me free.

I know you didn't do it for me. You did it for your family. For your daughter. For your city.

But I'm grateful anyway.

I'm writing to tell you that I'm going to be okay. That I'm going to live my life without fear. That I'm going to be happy.

Thank you for giving me that.

Anna

---

Christabel read the letter three times.

Then she handed it to Damien.

"She's thanking me."

"She should."

"I destroyed her father."

"He destroyed himself. You just showed the world who he really was."

"It doesn't feel like that."

"It never does."

---

That afternoon, Christabel wrote back.

Dear Anna,

Thank you for your letter. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for trusting me with your truth.

You don't owe me anything. You never did. You were never the problem. He was.

I hope you find peace. I hope you find happiness. I hope you find everything you've been looking for.

You deserve it.

Christabel

---

Damien watched her seal the envelope.

"You're a good person."

"I'm a person who does terrible things."

"That's not the same thing."

"It feels the same."

"It never does."

---

The next morning, Christabel went to the garden.

The rose was still blooming.

She knelt beside it.

"I helped someone today," she whispered.

The rose swayed.

"A woman whose father hurt her. I helped her feel safe."

She touched the petals.

"That's what I want to do. For everyone. For Lena. For our family. For our city."

---

Damien appeared in the doorway.

"She's awake," he said.

"Lena?"

"Yes."

"I'll be right there."

He walked to her.

Took her hand.

"What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking about the future. About what we're building. About who we want to be."

"And?"

"And I want to be someone who helps people. Not just destroys enemies."

"You can be both."

"Is that possible?"

He looked at her.

"It is for us."

---

Lena was in the nursery.

Awake. Alert.

Christabel lifted her from the crib.

Held her against her chest.

"Good morning, little one," she said.

Lena cooed.

"I helped someone today. A woman who was hurt by her father. I helped her feel safe."

Lena stared at her.

"That's the kind of person I want to be. The kind who helps. The kind who protects. The kind who loves."

---

That night, Christabel couldn't sleep.

She lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about Anna.

About the letter.

About the future.

Damien was awake beside her.

"What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking about all the people we've hurt. All the people we've destroyed. All the lives we've changed."

"And?"

"And I'm wondering if it's worth it."

"Is our family worth it?"

"Yes."

"Is Lena worth it?"

"Yes."

"Then it's worth it."

---

He pulled her into his arms.

"We're not saints. We're not heroes. We're not even good people."

"I know."

"We're parents. Parents who will do anything to protect their child."

"Even destroy others?"

"Even destroy others."

---

The next morning, Christabel went to the warehouse.

The soldiers were training.

Cole saw her.

Stopped.

"Mrs. Moreau."

"Cole."

"Is everything okay?"

"I need to talk to them."

"All of them?"

"All of them."

---

He gathered the fifty.

They stood in formation.

Christabel walked to the front.

"I'm not going to give you a speech," she said. "I'm not going to tell you that we're heroes. We're not. We're killers. Just like me."

No one spoke.

"I'm going to tell you something. About the future."

She looked at each face.

"I want to build something. Not just a city. Not just an empire. A world where my daughter can grow up without fear."

She paused.

"I need your help."

---

Cole stepped forward.

"We're with you."

"To the end?"

"To the end."
