Chapter 136 - Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Six: The Reconnection

Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Six: The Reconnection

The penthouse was quiet. Too quiet.

Lina had noticed it every day since the twins left for college. The silence pressed against her like a physical weight, filling the rooms where laughter used to echo, where arguments used to flare, where life used to hum.

But tonight was different.

Tonight, Lina looked at Ethan across the dinner table and realized how long it had been since they had really seen each other.

---

"When was the last time we went on a date?" Lina asked.

Ethan looked up from his plate. "A date?"

"You know. Dinner. Movies. Just the two of us."

Ethan was quiet for a moment. "I don't remember."

Lina's heart ached. "That's not good."

Ethan set down his fork. "We've been busy."

"We've been parenting," Lina corrected. "We've been so focused on the twins that we forgot about us."

Ethan reached across the table and took her hand.

"Then let's remember," he said.

---

Ethan planned the date.

He chose a small restaurant on the other side of the city, one they had never been to before. He made reservations. He bought flowers. He wore the suit he had worn to their vow renewal.

Lina wore the green dress—the same one she had worn the night they met, the same one she had worn when she renewed her vows, the same one that made her feel powerful.

Ethan looked at her when she walked into the living room.

"You're beautiful," he said.

Lina smiled. "You're not so bad yourself."

He took her hand.

"Let's go," he said.

---

The restaurant was perfect.

Soft lighting. Quiet music. A table by the window overlooking the city.

They ordered wine. They ordered food. They talked.

Not about the twins. Not about work. Not about the past.

About themselves.

About their dreams. Their fears. Their hopes for the future.

"I forgot what this was like," Lina said. "Being alone with you. Not being Mama. Not being Mrs. Blackwood. Just being Lina."

Ethan took her hand. "I never forgot."

"What do you mean?"

"I see you, Lina. Not the mother. Not the wife. You. The woman who survived a coma. The woman who fought for her family. The woman who makes me laugh when I don't want to."

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

"I see you too," she said. "The man who waited. The man who never gave up. The man who loves me even when I'm difficult."

"You're not difficult."

"I'm extremely difficult."

Ethan laughed. "Okay. You're extremely difficult. But you're worth it."

---

After dinner, they walked through the city.

The streets were crowded, the lights bright, the air cool. They held hands, like they used to, before the twins, before the chaos, before life got in the way.

"I've missed this," Lina said.

Ethan squeezed her hand. "Me too."

"We should do this more often."

"We should."

They walked in silence, holding each other's hands, while the city hummed around them.

---

They came home to the quiet penthouse.

The twins' rooms were empty. The halls were silent. But for the first time, the silence did not feel lonely.

It felt like possibility.

Ethan pulled Lina into his arms.

"I love you," he said.

Lina leaned into him.

"I love you too," she said.

They stood in the living room, holding each other, while the city hummed outside the window.

---

The next morning, Lina woke up in Ethan's arms.

The sun was streaming through the window, warm and golden. She could hear birds singing. She could hear Sprinkles barking in her sleep. She could hear Sky chirping in her cage.

She felt peaceful.

Ethan opened his eyes.

"Good morning," he said.

Lina smiled. "Good morning."

They lay in bed, holding each other, not moving, not needing to.

"What do you want to do today?" Ethan asked.

Lina thought about the question.

"I want to be with you," she said. "That's all."

Ethan kissed her forehead.

"Then that's what we'll do," he said.

---

They spent the day together.

They went for a walk in the park. They had lunch at a small café. They went to a museum. They held hands.

They talked about everything and nothing—their childhoods, their dreams, their fears for the future.

Lina felt like she was falling in love with him all over again.

"I am falling in love with you all over again," she said.

Ethan smiled. "Good. Because I never stopped."

---

That night, Lina sat on the couch with Ethan.

The penthouse was quiet. But the silence did not bother her anymore.

"How do you feel?" Ethan asked.

"Full," Lina said. "Not from the food. From... everything. From the weekend. From the memories. From the love."

Ethan put his arm around her.

"I feel the same," he said.

Lina leaned into him.

"Thank you," she said. "For never giving up on me."

Ethan kissed her forehead.

"Thank you for giving me a reason to stay," he said.

They sat in the darkness, holding each other, while the city hummed outside the window.

And Lina thought about all the years ahead. The challenges. The joys. The moments she would hold Ethan's hand and the moments she would have to let go.

She was not afraid.

Not anymore.

She had survived worse.

She could survive anything.

As long as she had him.
