Chapter 132 - Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Two: The Graduation

Chapter One Hundred Thirty-Two: The Graduation

The graduation ceremony was held on a sunny Sunday in June.

The football field was transformed into a sea of chairs, a stage, and a podium. Families filled the stands, their faces flushed with excitement and pride. The graduates sat in rows, their caps and gowns a sea of blue and gold.

Lina sat in the front row, Ethan beside her, Victoria and Victor and Katherine behind her. David and his half-siblings were there too. Maya sat with her mother. Emily came with baby Hope, who was not a baby anymore but a toddler with curly hair and a mischievous smile.

Lina's heart was pounding.

Her babies were graduating.

She thought about the first day of kindergarten, the twins so small and scared, holding her hand, refusing to let go. She thought about the first day of middle school, the twins walking into the building with their friends, barely acknowledging her. She thought about the first day of high school, the twins telling her she could drop them off at the curb.

And now graduation.

She was not ready.

But she had to be.

---

The ceremony began.

The principal spoke. The valedictorian spoke. The choir sang. The band played.

Lily and Leo sat in the second row, side by side, their caps slightly askew.

Lina watched them and cried.

Ethan held her hand.

"They're going to be fine," he said.

Lina leaned into him.

"I know," she said. "But I'm still going to cry."

"That's your job."

---

Lily's name was called.

She walked across the stage, her diploma in her hand, her smile bright. The crowd cheered. Her friends screamed. Her family applauded.

Lina clapped until her hands hurt.

Leo's name was called.

He walked across the stage, his diploma in his hand, his expression serious. The crowd cheered. His friends applauded. His family whistled.

Lina clapped until her hands hurt.

---

After the ceremony, the families gathered on the field.

Lily was surrounded by friends, taking photographs, exchanging hugs. Leo stood to the side, holding his diploma, waiting.

Lina walked over to him.

"I'm proud of you," she said.

Leo looked at her. "I know."

"Do you have any idea how proud?"

Leo was quiet for a moment. "Maybe."

Lina pulled him into her arms.

"I'm so proud of you," she whispered. "More than words can say."

Leo hugged her back.

"I love you, Mama," he said.

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

"I love you too, baby. More than anything."

---

Lily ran over to them, her friends trailing behind.

"Mama! Daddy! We did it!"

Lina hugged her.

"You did it," Lina said. "You really did it."

Lily hugged her back.

"I couldn't have done it without you," she said.

Lina shook her head.

"You could have," she said. "You're stronger than you know."

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

"I love you, Mama," she said.

Lina held her daughter.

"I love you too, sweetheart. More than anything."

---

The family celebrated that night.

The penthouse was filled with people—Victoria and Victor and Katherine, David and his half-siblings, Maya and her mother, Emily and Hope, friends and neighbors and the particular chaos of a family that had something to celebrate.

Lily told the story of graduation again and again, adding new details each time. Leo sat on the couch with Victor, looking at photographs of the day.

Victoria found Lina in the kitchen.

"They're amazing," Victoria said.

"They're something."

Victoria smiled. "They're yours."

Lina looked at her children—Lily, holding court in the living room; Leo, explaining the science of sound to Victor.

"Yes," she said. "They are."

---

Later, after the guests had gone home and the twins were asleep, Lina sat on the couch with Ethan.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

"Full," Lina said. "Not from the cake. From... everything. From watching them. From seeing them shine."

Ethan put his arm around her. "They get it from you."

"Get what?"

"The shining. The confidence. The ability to stand in front of a room full of people and not be afraid."

Lina leaned into him. "They get it from you too."

"Maybe. Or maybe they get it from themselves. Maybe they're just who they're supposed to be."

Lina thought about that.

She thought about Lily, the performer. Leo, the scientist. Both of them perfect, just as they were.

"I can't wait to see who they become," Lina said.

Ethan kissed her forehead.

"Neither can I," he said.

---

The Next Morning

Lina found Leo in his room, sitting on his bed, holding his diploma.

"Are you okay, baby?" she asked.

Leo nodded. "I was thinking about graduation."

"What about it?"

"About growing up. About leaving."

Lina sat beside him. "And?"

Leo was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I'm scared."

Lina's heart ached.

"Of what?" she asked.

"Of the unknown. Of being on my own. Of not having you there."

Lina pulled him into her arms.

"You'll always have me," she said. "No matter how far you go. No matter how old you get. I will always be here."

Leo hugged her back.

"I love you, Mama," he whispered.

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

"I love you too, baby. More than anything."

They sat in the darkness, holding each other, while the city woke up outside the window.

And Lina thought about all the years ahead. The challenges. The joys. The moments she would hold her children and the moments she would have to let them go.

She was not ready.

But she was learning.

And learning, she was beginning to understand, was the most important part of love.
