Chapter 55 - Chapter Fifty-Four: The Sleepover

Chapter Fifty-Four: The Sleepover

The invitation came from Maya.

"Can I sleep over at your house?" she asked Lily one afternoon. "My mom has to work late."

Lily ran to Lina. "Mama! Maya wants to sleep over!"

Lina looked at Maya's mother, who was standing in the doorway, looking tired and apologetic.

"Are you sure?" Lina asked.

Maya's mother nodded. "I hate to ask. But my shift doesn't end until midnight. I don't want her to be alone."

Lina smiled. "She's not alone. She's with us."

Maya's mother's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Lina hugged her.

"That's what family is for," she said.

---

The sleepover was chaos.

Lily planned activities for hours. Leo made sure Maya had her own pillow and her own blanket and her own stuffed animal in case she got lonely. Sprinkles ran around in circles, wagging her tail, thrilled by the excitement.

Lina made popcorn. Ethan made pizza. Victoria came over to help.

Maya arrived at six o'clock, her backpack full of pajamas and a toothbrush and a small stuffed cat that she carried everywhere.

"Welcome," Lina said, hugging her.

"Thank you for having me," Maya replied.

"You're always welcome here."

Maya smiled.

She ran off to join the twins.

---

The evening was chaos.

The children played games. They watched a movie. They ate too much popcorn. Sprinkles begged for scraps. Leo explained the science behind the movie's special effects. Lily and Maya built a blanket fort.

Lina watched from the couch, her heart full.

"She's a good kid," Victoria said, sitting beside her.

"She's a great kid."

Victoria was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "You're good at this."

"At what?"

"At making people feel at home."

Lina looked at Maya, laughing with Lily, her small stuffed cat tucked under her arm.

"That's all anyone wants," Lina said. "To feel at home."

Victoria nodded.

"That's true," she said. "That's very true."

---

Bedtime was chaos.

The children refused to sleep. They talked and laughed and told stories. Sprinkles barked. Leo complained. Lily and Maya giggled.

Lina stood in the doorway, watching.

"Lights out in ten minutes," she said.

"Mama, we're not tired," Lily protested.

"You will be tomorrow."

"Tomorrow is Saturday."

"Tomorrow is still a day."

Lily sighed.

Lina turned off the light.

The children whispered in the darkness.

Lina smiled.

She walked to her own bed.

---

The call came at eleven o'clock.

Lina's phone buzzed with a text from Maya's mother: Shift got extended. Can she stay until morning?

Lina typed back: Of course. She's always welcome.

Maya's mother: Thank you. I don't know what I would do without you.

Lina: You would figure it out. You're stronger than you know.

Maya's mother: So are you.

Lina set down the phone.

She walked to the guest room and checked on the children.

They were asleep in a pile on the bed, covered in blankets and stuffed animals and the particular peace of children who felt safe.

Lina covered them with an extra blanket and kissed each forehead.

"Goodnight, sweet ones," she whispered.

She turned off the light.

She walked to her own bed.

---

The next morning was chaos.

Lina made pancakes. Ethan made coffee. The children ran around, playing tag, chasing Sprinkles, laughing.

Maya's mother arrived at nine o'clock, looking tired but grateful.

"Thank you," she said again. "For everything."

Lina hugged her.

"Thank you for trusting us," she said.

Maya's mother hugged her back.

"I always will," she said.

---

Maya came over every weekend after that.

She slept over on Fridays. She stayed through Saturdays. She became a permanent fixture in the penthouse, as much a part of the family as the twins.

Lina bought her a toothbrush. She bought her pajamas. She bought her a small bed for the guest room.

"You don't have to do this," Maya's mother said.

"I want to," Lina replied. "She's family."

Maya's mother cried.

Lina held her.

And Maya, in the other room, played with Lily and Leo and Sprinkles, laughing, happy, home.

---

The Conversation

Lina sat on Maya's bed, holding her hand.

Maya was in her pajamas, her small stuffed cat tucked under her arm.

"Maya," Lina said, "can I ask you something?"

Maya nodded.

"Where was your dad?"

Maya was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "I don't know. He left when I was little. My mom doesn't talk about him."

Lina's heart ached.

"I'm sorry," she said.

"It's okay. I have my mom. I have you. I have Lily and Leo and Sprinkles."

Lina pulled her into her arms.

"You'll always have us," she said. "No matter what."

Maya hugged her back.

"I know," she whispered.

Lina held her.

And she thought about all the children in the world who needed a home, who needed love, who needed someone to hold them.

She could not save them all.

But she could save this one.
