Chapter 53 - Chapter Fifty-Two: The Field Trip

Chapter Fifty-Two: The Field Trip

The permission slip came home in Lily's backpack on a Friday.

Dear Parents,

The first grade class will be going on a field trip to the City Farm on Thursday, May 18th. We will leave at 9:00 AM and return at 2:00 PM. Children should wear comfortable clothes and bring a packed lunch.

We need parent volunteers. Please let us know if you are available.

Lina read the letter three times.

"I want to volunteer," she said to Ethan.

"You hate field trips."

"I don't hate field trips. I hate the chaos."

"That's what field trips are."

Lina sighed. "I know. But I want to see the twins' faces when they see the animals."

Ethan smiled. "Then volunteer. I'll hold down the fort."

Lina signed the permission slip.

She was already regretting it.

---

The morning of the field trip arrived cold and clear.

Lina packed lunches for the twins—sandwiches, apples, and a small chocolate bar "for emergencies." She dressed in comfortable clothes and sensible shoes. She braced herself for chaos.

The bus was loud.

Children shouted. Teachers shouted. The bus driver shouted. Lina sat in the back, holding Lily's hand on one side and Leo's on the other.

"Are you okay, Mama?" Lily asked.

"I'm fine, sweetheart."

"You look scared."

"I'm not scared. I'm... prepared."

Leo looked at her. "For what?"

"Chaos."

Leo nodded. "That's wise."

Lina laughed.

The bus drove on.

---

The farm was chaos.

Animals everywhere. Children everywhere. Mud everywhere. Lina stood in the middle of it all, her head spinning, her hands full of permission slips and lunch boxes and a small first aid kit that she had brought "just in case."

"Stay together," she said to her group—Lily, Leo, Maya, and two other children she didn't know.

"Where are we going first?" Lily asked.

"The barn."

"Why?"

"Because that's where the animals are."

Lily nodded. "Let's go."

She ran ahead.

Lina chased her.

Leo walked behind, taking notes.

Maya stayed close to Lina.

The other two children ran in opposite directions.

Lina counted.

Five children. She had started with five children.

She still had five children.

Barely.

---

The barn was loud.

Cows mooed. Sheep baaed. Children screamed. Lina stood in the doorway, watching her group scatter.

Lily was petting a goat. Leo was reading a sign about cows. Maya was standing in the corner, watching everything.

"Stay together!" Lina called.

No one listened.

She took a breath.

She counted.

Five children. Still five children.

She started collecting them.

---

Lunch was a disaster.

Lily traded her sandwich for a bag of chips. Leo ate his vegetables without complaint. Maya shared her cookies with the other children. The two unknown children argued about whose juice box was whose.

Lina sat on a hay bale, eating a granola bar, and wondered how she had ever thought this was a good idea.

"Mama?" Lily appeared beside her.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"This is the best day ever."

Lina looked at her daughter's face—flushed with excitement, smeared with dirt, glowing with joy.

"You think so?"

"I know so."

Lina pulled her into her arms.

"I'm glad," she said. "I'm glad you're happy."

Lily hugged her back.

"Thank you for coming," she said.

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

"Thank you for letting me," she said.

---

The bus ride back was quiet.

The children were exhausted, their heads drooping, their eyes closing. Lina sat in the back, Lily asleep on her shoulder, Leo asleep on her other side.

Maya sat across from her, awake, watching.

"Are you okay?" Lina asked.

Maya nodded. "I had fun."

"I'm glad."

Maya was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "Thank you for letting me come."

"Of course. You're part of the family."

Maya's eyes filled with tears.

"I've never had a family before," she said.

Lina's heart broke.

"You have one now," she said. "You've always had one. You just didn't know it."

Maya nodded.

She closed her eyes.

And she fell asleep, smiling.

---

Lina carried the twins off the bus.

Ethan was waiting at the school, leaning against the car, a cup of coffee in each hand.

"How was it?" he asked.

"Chaos," Lina said. "Wonderful, beautiful chaos."

Ethan handed her a coffee.

"You survived," he said.

"I survived."

"How do you feel?"

Lina thought about the question. She thought about the barn and the animals and the mud. She thought about Lily's joy and Leo's notes and Maya's tears.

"I feel like I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be," she said. "Not because it's easy. Because it's hard. And I'm still here. I'm still trying. I'm still becoming."

Ethan kissed her forehead.

"That's all any of us can do," he said.

Lina leaned into him.

"Let's go home," she said.

"Let's go home," he agreed.

---

That Night

The twins told Ethan about every detail of the field trip—the animals, the barn, the mud. They talked until their voices were hoarse and their eyes were drooping.

After they were asleep, Lina sat on the couch with a glass of wine.

Ethan sat beside her.

"The field trip was a success," he said.

"It was a success."

"You're a hero."

Lina laughed. "I'm a survivor."

"Same thing, sometimes."

Lina leaned her head on his shoulder.

"I'm tired," she said. "But it's a good tired."

Ethan kissed her temple.

"Rest," he said. "You've earned it."

Lina closed her eyes.

She dreamed of goats and cows and a little girl who had finally found a family.
