Chapter 44 - Chapter Forty-Three: The Fever

Chapter Forty-Three: The Fever

It started with a cough.

Lily woke up on a Tuesday morning with a rasp in her throat and a flush on her cheeks. Lina felt her forehead. It was warm.

"No school today," Lina said.

"But I have a math test!"

"You can take the test when you're better."

Lily crossed her arms. "I'm fine."

"You're not fine. You have a fever."

Lily opened her mouth to argue, then sneezed.

"Bless you," Lina said.

Lily glared at her.

But she climbed back into bed.

---

The fever climbed throughout the day.

By noon, Lily was listless, her eyes glassy, her skin hot to the touch. Lina called the pediatrician. They said to wait, to watch, to bring her in if it got worse.

By three o'clock, it got worse.

Lina bundled Lily into the car, her heart pounding. Ethan stayed home with Leo, who was already worried about his sister.

"It's probably just the flu," Lina told herself. "It's probably nothing."

But she didn't believe it.

---

The emergency room was crowded.

Lina sat in a plastic chair, Lily in her lap, both of them waiting. Lily's breathing was shallow. Her eyes were closed. Lina held her and prayed to a God she wasn't sure she believed in.

"Lily Blackwood?"

Lina stood up. A nurse led them to a small room, asked questions, took Lily's temperature. Her face was neutral, but her eyes were worried.

"The doctor will be in shortly," the nurse said.

Lina sat on the examination table, Lily in her arms.

"Please," she whispered. "Please be okay."

---

The doctor came in with a clipboard and a frown.

"Lily's fever is 104," she said. "We're going to run some tests."

"What kind of tests?"

"Blood work. A chest X-ray. We need to rule out pneumonia."

Lina's heart stopped.

Pneumonia.

Her grandmother had died of pneumonia. The word itself felt like a death sentence.

"She's going to be fine," the doctor said, reading Lina's face. "We caught it early. But we need to be sure."

Lina nodded.

She held Lily's hand while they drew blood. She held Lily's hand while they took the X-ray. She held Lily's hand while they waited for the results.

Ethan arrived an hour later, Leo in tow.

"How is she?" he asked.

"They're running tests."

Ethan sat beside her, Leo on his lap.

"She's going to be fine," he said.

"You don't know that."

"I know that she's strong. I know that she's a fighter. I know that she has you."

Lina leaned against him.

"Stay," she said. "Please."

"I'm not going anywhere."

They sat in the small room, holding each other, waiting.

---

The doctor came back with good news.

"It's not pneumonia," she said. "It's a severe viral infection. We're going to admit her for observation. Keep her hydrated. Monitor her fever. She should be fine in a few days."

Lina burst into tears.

Relief. Fear. Exhaustion. All of it poured out at once.

Ethan held her.

Leo held Lily's hand.

"We're here," Leo said. "We're not going anywhere."

Lily smiled—a weak, tired smile.

"I know," she whispered.

---

The hospital room was small but private.

Lily slept in the bed, an IV in her arm, monitors beeping softly. Lina sat in a chair beside her, holding her hand. Ethan sat on the other side, Leo asleep in his lap.

"She's going to be fine," Ethan said.

"I know."

"But you're still scared."

Lina nodded. "I'm always scared. Every time they get sick. Every time they leave the house. Every time I'm not there to protect them."

Ethan reached across Lily's bed and took her hand.

"That's parenthood," he said. "It's loving someone so much that their pain feels like your pain."

Lina squeezed his hand.

"I hate it," she said.

"I know."

"But I wouldn't trade it for anything."

Ethan smiled.

"Neither would I," he said.

---

Lily was released after three days.

She walked out of the hospital, pale and thin but smiling, holding Leo's hand. Lina watched her and felt grateful—not for the illness, not for the fear, but for the recovery.

For the second chances.

For the moments when everything turned out okay.

---

The First Night Home

Lily slept in her own bed, Snowball tucked under her arm, her breathing steady and deep.

Lina stood in the doorway, watching her.

"She's okay," Ethan said, coming up behind her.

"She's okay."

"You should sleep."

"I will. In a minute."

Ethan put his arm around her.

"I love you," he said.

"I love you too."

They stood in the doorway, watching their daughter sleep.

And Lina felt, for the first time in days, that everything might be okay.

---

The Aftermath

Lily recovered slowly.

She was tired for weeks. She missed school. She missed her friends. She missed being the loud, energetic, chaotic child she had always been.

But she was alive.

She was healthy.

She was home.

Lina took time off work. She stayed with Lily, read her stories, made her soup, held her hand.

"Mama?" Lily said one afternoon.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Am I going to die?"

Lina's heart broke.

"No, baby. You're not going to die. You're going to live a long, beautiful, wonderful life."

Lily considered this.

"Promise?"

Lina pulled her into her arms.

"Promise," she whispered.

Lily hugged her back.

And Lina held her daughter and did not let go.

---

The Lesson

Lina learned something during those long weeks.

She learned that life was fragile. That health was precious. That the moments she had taken for granted—the chaos, the noise, the arguing—were gifts.

She learned to hold her children tighter. To say "I love you" more often. To let go of the small things that didn't matter.

She learned that fear was not a weakness. It was a reminder.

A reminder to be present. To be grateful. To be here.
