Chapter 32 - Chapter Thirty-One: The Gala

Chapter Thirty-One: The Gala

The project landed on Lina's desk on a Monday morning.

It was a charity gala for the Children's Hospital—the same hospital where the twins had been born, where Lina had spent countless hours during her own recovery. The event was black-tie, expected to raise over a million dollars, and scheduled for six weeks from now.

Lina's boss, Margaret, dropped the file on her desk with a thud.

"You're lead planner," Margaret said. "Don't mess it up."

Lina stared at the file. "Me? Lead planner? I've only been back for—"

"You've been back long enough. You're ready. The client asked for you specifically."

Lina blinked. "The client asked for me?"

Margaret nodded. "Dr. Park. The neurologist who treated you after the coma. She said, and I quote, 'Lina Blackwood is the only person I trust with this event.'"

Lina's eyes filled with tears.

Dr. Park. The doctor who had slipped her a business card in the hospital, who had warned her that someone was trying to make sure she never remembered. The doctor who had believed her when no one else did.

"I'll do it," Lina said. "I won't let her down."

Margaret smiled. "I know you won't."

---

The next six weeks were chaos.

Lina worked late nights and early mornings, juggling vendors and sponsors and a thousand small details that could make or break an event. She came home exhausted, smelling of floral arrangements and printer ink, and fell into bed beside Ethan without saying a word.

The twins noticed.

"Mama is tired," Lily said one morning, watching Lina drink her third cup of coffee.

"Mama is working hard," Lina replied.

"Too hard," Leo said. "You should rest."

Lina smiled. "I'll rest after the gala."

"When is the gala?"

"Saturday."

"That's five days away."

"I know, sweetheart."

Leo looked at her with his serious gray eyes. "You should rest before then. So you're not tired for the gala."

Lina pulled him into her arms. "You're right. I should rest. But I can't. Not yet."

Leo hugged her back. "When you're done, we'll make pancakes."

"Chocolate chip?"

"Chocolate chip."

Lina laughed.

And for a moment, the stress melted away.

---

The day of the gala arrived cold and clear.

Lina was at the venue by six in the morning, directing vendors, checking seating charts, tasting the food that would be served to five hundred guests. Her phone buzzed constantly with texts from Ethan (good luck), Victoria (you've got this), Victor (I'm so proud of you), and Katherine (wish I could be there).

She did not have time to respond.

She did not have time to think.

She just kept moving.

---

The gala began at seven o'clock.

Lina stood in the back of the ballroom, watching the guests arrive. The women were beautiful in their gowns. The men were handsome in their tuxedos. The room sparkled with chandeliers and candlelight and the particular magic of a well-planned event.

Dr. Park found her there.

"You did this," the doctor said, her voice full of wonder. "You made all of this happen."

Lina shook her head. "I had a lot of help."

"You had a vision. You had determination. You had heart." Dr. Park took Lina's hands. "I knew you could do this. I knew it the day I met you in the hospital."

Lina's eyes stung. "Thank you. For believing in me."

"Thank you for proving me right."

They hugged.

And then the gala began.

---

The speeches were moving. The auction was competitive. The food was excellent. By the end of the night, the Children's Hospital had raised over a million dollars—more than anyone had expected.

Lina stood at the back of the ballroom, watching the guests dance, and felt something she had not expected.

Pride.

Not in the event. Not in the money raised. In herself.

She had done this. She had planned this. She had made this happen.

She was not the woman who had woken up in a hospital bed with no memories. She was not the woman who had been afraid of her own shadow. She was someone new. Someone stronger. Someone who could handle anything.

"Mama!"

Lina turned.

The twins were running toward her, Ethan behind them, all of them dressed in their finest clothes. Lily was wearing a dress with sparkles. Leo was wearing a tiny tuxedo. Ethan was wearing the same black tuxedo he had worn to their wedding.

"What are you doing here?" Lina asked, kneeling down to hug them.

"We wanted to see you," Lily said. "Daddy said you were doing something important."

"It is important. But you're more important."

Leo looked around the ballroom. "This is fancy."

"It is fancy."

"Did you do all this?"

Lina nodded. "I did all this."

Leo looked at her with new respect. "You're amazing, Mama."

Lina's heart swelled.

"Thank you, sweetheart."

---

Ethan walked over and kissed her.

"You're amazing," he said.

"You already said that."

"I'll say it again. You're amazing."

Lina laughed. "You're not so bad yourself."

They stood in the back of the ballroom, watching the guests dance, holding hands.

"Can we dance?" Lily asked.

"Of course we can dance."

Lina picked up Lily. Ethan picked up Leo. They danced together, a family of four, swaying to music that was too slow for the twins and too fast for Lina's tired feet.

It was not a perfect moment.

But it was theirs.

---

After the gala, Lina sat in the car, her head against the seat, her eyes closed.

Ethan drove. The twins were asleep in the back.

"How do you feel?" Ethan asked.

"Tired," Lina said. "Happy. Proud."

"You should be proud."

"I am."

Ethan reached over and took her hand. "Dr. Park was right. You are the only person who could have done this."

Lina opened her eyes. "Why do you say that?"

"Because you understand what it means to heal. You understand what it means to fight. You understand what it means to come back from the edge."

Lina squeezed his hand.

"We all come back from the edge," she said. "Some of us just take longer than others."

Ethan smiled.

"Let's go home," he said.

"Let's go home," Lina agreed.

---

The Next Morning

Lina woke up to the smell of pancakes.

She walked into the kitchen and found the twins at the table, Ethan at the stove, and a stack of chocolate chip pancakes already cooling on a plate.

"You said you would rest after the gala," Leo said. "So we're making you breakfast."

Lina sat down at the table.

"You're making me breakfast?"

"We're making you breakfast," Lily confirmed. "Daddy is doing the cooking. We're doing the eating."

Lina laughed.

"That's not how breakfast works."

"It's how our breakfast works."

Lina looked at her family—her beautiful, strange, perfect family—and felt her heart overflow with love.

"Thank you," she said. "For everything."

Ethan brought her a plate of pancakes.

"You're welcome," he said. "For everything."

They ate together, laughing and talking and planning the day ahead.

It was not a special day. It was not a milestone. It was just a Sunday morning in a penthouse full of people who loved each other.

But it was enough.

It was everything.
