The first scream came from inside the pack house.
Not from the forest.
Not from the borders.
From within.
Elara's head snapped toward the sound, her pulse spiking instantly.
"That was not outside," she said.
Rowan was already moving.
"I know exactly where that came from."
Kael's entire body went still for a fraction of a second, his wolf surging violently beneath his skin.
Then he turned.
"Inside. Now."
The group moved fast, boots striking stone as they rushed back into the pack house. The moment they crossed the threshold, the scent hit them.
Blood.
Fresh.
Heavy.
Wrong.
Mira cursed under her breath.
"This was not a breach. This was planned."
Elara's stomach twisted as they followed the scent down the corridor. The deeper they went, the quieter it became. No voices. No movement.
Just silence.
That was worse.
They reached the lower hall.
And stopped.
A body lay on the ground.
One of their own.
A guard Elara recognized from earlier, now motionless, eyes open, blood pooling beneath him.
Her breath caught.
"Oh God."
Rowan knelt beside the body, his expression hardening.
"This was not a Lycan."
Kael stepped closer.
"How do you know."
Rowan pointed to the wound.
Clean.
Precise.
A blade.
Not claws.
Mira's voice lowered.
"So they are not just outside."
Elara felt a cold wave of realization.
"They are already in here."
A slow clap echoed from the shadows at the end of the hall.
Everyone turned.
A figure stepped forward.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
Elara's breath stopped.
"No."
Rowan's face went pale with disbelief.
"That is not possible."
The man standing before them was one of their own.
Darian.
A trusted pack member.
A fighter who had stood beside Rowan in battle.
And now he smiled.
But there was nothing warm in it.
"Good," Darian said softly. "You are all here."
Kael's voice dropped into something lethal.
"Explain yourself."
Darian tilted his head slightly.
"I could say many things. Loyalty. Survival. Evolution."
Rowan stood slowly.
"You betrayed the pack."
Darian's smile widened.
"I chose the winning side."
The words hit harder than any blow.
Mira stepped forward, blade ready.
"You think Aldric will spare you."
Darian let out a quiet laugh.
"No."
His eyes flickered with something darker.
"I think he will reward me."
Elara's chest tightened.
"This is about power."
Darian looked at her, and for the first time, there was something almost reverent in his gaze.
"No," he said softly. "This is about you."
Kael moved instantly, placing himself between them.
"You will not speak to her."
Darian's smile did not fade.
"It is already too late for that."
Something about his tone sent a chill through Elara's spine.
"What do you mean."
Darian's gaze locked onto hers.
"You think tonight was the beginning."
Silence.
"It was not."
Kael's instincts sharpened dangerously.
"Talk."
Darian stepped closer into the light.
"The moment she stepped into this territory, the game changed."
Elara's heart pounded.
"You knew."
"Yes."
Rowan's voice was filled with fury.
"You knew what she was and said nothing."
Darian shrugged.
"I was waiting."
"For what," Mira demanded.
"For confirmation."
Elara's stomach dropped.
"The attack," she whispered. "The first one."
Darian nodded.
"A test."
Her chest tightened.
"And you let it happen."
"I made sure it happened."
The room went deadly still.
Kael's voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.
"You led them here."
Darian met his gaze without fear.
"I opened the border."
Rowan lunged, fury overtaking him.
But Kael stopped him with a single movement.
"Not yet."
Darian smiled.
"You always were the disciplined one."
Kael stepped forward slowly.
"You killed one of your own."
Darian's expression did not change.
"He was in the way."
Mira's voice was ice.
"You are not leaving this room alive."
Darian chuckled softly.
"That was never the plan."
Elara frowned.
"Then what is."
Darian's eyes flickered toward her again.
"To deliver you."
The air shifted.
Wrong.
Dangerous.
Kael felt it a second before it happened.
"Move," he snapped.
Too late.
The ground beneath them pulsed.
The symbols.
The same ones from the forest.
Carved into the stone floor.
Activated.
A surge of dark energy exploded upward, throwing everyone back.
Elara cried out as she was knocked off her feet.
Kael hit the wall hard but pushed himself up instantly.
"Elara."
She was already trying to stand, disoriented.
The symbols glowed brighter.
Red.
Alive.
Darian stepped back, untouched.
"You really should have paid closer attention," he said calmly.
Rowan staggered to his feet.
"You planned this."
Darian nodded.
"For weeks."
Mira's voice shook with rage.
"You were never one of us."
Darian's smile faded slightly.
"No."
His eyes darkened.
"I was something better."
The energy in the room intensified.
Elara felt it wrapping around her, pulling at something deep inside her chest.
The same silver light from before flickered beneath her skin.
"No," she whispered.
Kael moved toward her, fighting against the force pushing him back.
"Stay with me."
Darian watched with interest.
"There it is."
Elara's breathing became uneven.
"It hurts."
The symbols flared brighter.
Kael roared, forcing himself forward.
"You do not get to touch her."
Darian's voice was calm.
"I already have."
The energy surged again.
And then
everything stopped.
The red glow flickered.
Then died.
Silence crashed over the room.
Everyone froze.
Darian's expression changed for the first time.
Confusion.
"What."
A new presence filled the space.
Cold.
Ancient.
Overwhelming.
A voice spoke from the doorway.
"You overstepped."
Every head turned.
A man stood there.
Tall.
Still.
Eyes burning with something far more dangerous than rage.
Aldric.
The air itself seemed to bend around him.
Elara's breath caught.
This was not just power.
This was dominance.
Darian stepped back instinctively.
"My lord," he said.
Aldric did not look at him.
Not even once.
His gaze was fixed entirely on Elara.
"You were not meant to break her," Aldric said quietly.
Darian swallowed.
"I was securing her."
Aldric's voice did not rise.
"You were destroying what belongs to me."
Before anyone could react, Aldric moved.
Faster than sight.
His hand closed around Darian's throat.
The crack echoed through the hall.
Darian's body dropped lifelessly to the floor.
Elara stared in shock.
"You killed him."
Aldric finally looked at the others.
"He was expendable."
Kael stepped forward, every instinct screaming.
"You are not taking her."
Aldric's gaze shifted to him.
For a moment, something almost amused flickered in his expression.
"You think this is about taking."
His eyes returned to Elara.
"This is about awakening."
The silver light inside her surged violently in response.
Elara gasped.
Kael reached for her.
But Aldric spoke again.
And this time
it was not a command.
It was a promise.
"You will come to me willingly."
Elara shook her head, fear rising.
"No."
Aldric's voice softened.
"Yes."
The room seemed to darken around him.
"Because soon," he said, "you will understand what you truly are."
Kael's wolf roared, ready to tear him apart.
But something held him back.
Something unseen.
Unstoppable.
Aldric stepped backward toward the shadows.
"This was only the beginning."
And then he was gone.
Just like that.
The room fell silent.
Elara's breathing was uneven, her body still trembling.
Kael turned to her immediately.
"Look at me."
Her eyes met his.
Fear.
Confusion.
Something else.
Something awakening.
Rowan stared at Darian's body.
"We had a traitor in our own walls."
Mira's voice was tight.
"And we did not see it."
Elara's voice was barely a whisper.
"He said I would go to him willingly."
Kael's expression hardened.
"That will never happen."
But even as he said it
the silver light inside her flickered again.
And this time
it did not feel like resistance.
It felt like recognition.
