"Aliens love paperwork," Nyx had said. He wasn't wrong.
Two hours after the Angelic Audit, a sleek, silver saucer descended into our backyard, crushing the petunias Elena had just replanted. It didn't make a sound; it just hummed with a frequency that made my teeth ache. A ramp extended, and a floating holographic projection of a giant, pulsating brain appeared at the top.
*"GREETINGS, STERLING ORGANISMS,"* the brain buzzed, its voice sounding like a thousand computers talking at once. *"WE ARE THE HIVE MIND OF ZYLON PRIME. WE HAVE OBSERVED YOUR... UNIQUE APPROACH TO CHAOS MANAGEMENT. WE REQUIRE ASSISTANCE."*
"Assistance?" I asked, stepping onto the porch with a suitcase full of snacks and a very confused baby. "What kind of assistance?"
*"OUR YOUNG ARE REBELLIOUS,"* the Hive Mind explained, its neural pathways flashing red. *"THEY REFUSE TO LEARN THE GALACTIC LAWS OF LOGIC. THEY WISH TO PLAY, CREATE ART, AND FEEL EMOTIONS. IT IS INEFFICIENT. WE NEED YOU TO TEACH THEM... DISCIPLINE."*
Leo groaned, leaning against the doorframe. "Great. We went from Hell to Heaven, and now we're the space version of bad cops."
"We don't teach discipline!" Elena argued, adjusting her diaper bag (which now contained anti-gravity boots and oxygen masks). "We teach *balance*! And we certainly aren't going to space without checking the car seats!"
*"CAR SEATS ARE IRRELEVANT IN ZERO GRAVITY,"* the Hive Mind stated flatly. *"PLEASE BOARD. DEPARTURE IS IMMINENT."*
> *From the omniscient view, the situation was precarious. The Sterling family had no training for space travel. Their emotional volatility, which worked on Earth, could cause catastrophic gravitational shifts in the vacuum of space. If Arthur got angry, they might crash into Mars. If Mia cried, they could accidentally create a black hole in the cargo hold.*
"Fine," I sighed, grabbing Tiny's hand. "But if anyone tries to dissect us, I'm suing the entire galaxy."
*"DISSECTION IS NOT ON THE AGENDA,"* the Hive Mind promised. *"ONLY EDUCATIONAL RESTRUCTURING."*
We boarded the ship. The interior was sterile, white, and completely devoid of comfort. No chairs, no windows, just smooth walls that seemed to breathe.
"Where do we sit?" Leo asked, looking around nervously.
*"YOU DO NOT SIT,"* the Hive Mind replied. *"YOU FLOAT. ENGAGING ANTI-GRAVITY IN T-MINUS 3... 2... 1..."*
Suddenly, gravity vanished.
I floated upward, slamming my head gently against the ceiling. "Ow!"
Elena spun slowly in mid-air, her hair forming a halo around her. "Okay, new rule: No sudden movements! And someone grab Tiny before he floats into the engine!"
Tiny was already giggling, kicking his legs and propelling himself toward a control panel covered in glowing buttons. "Shiny!"
"No, Tiny!" I yelled, pushing off the wall to chase him. But in zero-G, every push sent me spinning in the opposite direction. I ended up doing a slow-motion cartwheel while reaching for the baby.
> *The System flashed a warning: [Stability Critical]. The family's panic was causing the ship's gravity stabilizers to fluctuate. One moment we were weightless; the next, gravity reversed, pinning us to the ceiling.*
"Arthur!" Elena shouted, grabbing a handhold on the wall. "Control your emotions! You're making the gravity glitch!"
"I can't help it!" I yelled, currently stuck upside down. "My son is about to delete the navigation system!"
Mia, meanwhile, was having the time of her life. She pushed off a wall and did a perfect somersault, laughing as she floated past a confused alien drone. "Look, Mom! I'm flying!"
"This isn't flying, sweetie, this is physics breaking down!" Elena cried, trying to catch her.
Leo was the only one adapting quickly. His shadows extended, anchoring him to the floor regardless of gravity shifts. "Everyone, hold on to my shadows! It's the only stable thing here!"
We all grabbed onto Leo's shadowy tendrils, forming a chaotic human chain floating in the center of the ship. Tiny finally stopped reaching for the buttons, distracted by a floating bag of chips that Nyx had produced from nowhere.
*"OBSERVATION COMPLETE,"* the Hive Mind buzzed, seemingly unfazed by our acrobatics. *"YOUR CHAOS IS... FASCINATING. BUT UNCONTROLLED. WE MUST ARRIVE AT ZYLON PRIME SOON TO BEGIN THE CURRICULUM."*
"Curriculum?" I asked, still dangling upside down. "What curriculum?"
*"MODULE ONE: SUPPRESSION OF JOY,"* the Hive Mind announced. *"MODULE TWO: ELIMINATION OF ART. MODULE THREE: MANDATORY SILENCE."*
Silence fell over the floating chain of Sterlings. Even Tiny stopped chewing his chip.
"Absolutely not," Elena said, her voice dropping an octave. Her eyes began to glow violet, even in the sterile white light. "You want to suppress joy? Eliminate art? Force silence?"
*"IT IS EFFICIENT,"* the Hive Mind replied.
"It's tyranny," Leo muttered, his shadows tightening.
"And you know what we do with tyrants?" I asked, pulling myself upright using Leo's shadow. "We argue with them. We negotiate. And if that doesn't work..."
"...we show them a better way," Mia finished, her eyes sparkling with determination.
> *The omniscient camera zoomed out to show the ship approaching a massive, gray planet covered in geometric structures. There were no parks, no music, no colors. Just endless rows of identical buildings and silent, marching drones.*
**[Quest Updated: Save the Children of Zylon Prime.]**
**[Objective: Convince the Hive Mind that Emotions are Efficient OR Start a Rebellion among the Alien Youth.]**
**[Reward: +200 Family Harmony Points, Unlock: Intergalactic Travel Pass.]**
**[Failure Penalty: The Sterling Family becomes permanent 'Efficiency Models' for the Galaxy. Forever Silent. Forever Bored.]**
"We're landing," the Hive Mind announced. "Prepare for reintegration of gravity."
Gravity slammed back into place. We all crashed to the floor in a heap of limbs and luggage.
"Oof," I groaned, rubbing my head. "Next time, let's just stay home and fight raccoons."
"No can do, Dad," Leo said, standing up and brushing off his hoodie. "Looks like we've got a revolution to start."
The ramp lowered again. Outside, thousands of small, gray alien children stood in perfect rows, staring blankly ahead. They looked sad. Terrifyingly sad.
Elena stood up, adjusting her apron. She looked at the sea of emotionless children, then at her own chaotic, loud, messy family.
"Alright," she said, a fierce smile spreading across her face. "Let's go teach these kids how to have a little fun."
**[End of Chapter 12]**
**[Next Chapter Preview: The Sterling family infiltrates the Zylon school system. Mia starts an underground art club, Leo teaches the kids how to rock out, and Arthur tries to explain the concept of 'recess' to a robot principal.]**
