Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The journey begins

Chapter 3 – The Journey Begins

Charley barely slept that night.

The two small tickets lay on the table beside his bed, and every time he closed his eyes he imagined the quiet platform of the mysterious third level.

The soft glow of the gas lamps.

The smell of coal smoke.

The peaceful atmosphere that felt completely different from the busy modern world.

For years Charley had felt tired of the fast and stressful life around him. The noise of traffic, crowded offices, and constant worries had slowly filled his mind with anxiety.

But the third level felt different.

It felt like a doorway to a simpler time.

When the morning sunlight entered the room, Charley woke up and immediately looked at the tickets again.

They were still there.

Two tickets to Galesburg.

He picked them up carefully.

"Louisa has to see this," he said quietly.

After breakfast, Charley finally decided to tell his wife everything.

Louisa was sitting near the window reading a newspaper when he approached her.

"Louisa," he said softly, "I need to show you something."

She looked up curiously.

"What is it?"

Charley placed the two tickets on the table.

Louisa frowned slightly as she picked them up.

"These look very old," she said.

"They are," Charley replied.

Louisa looked at him with confusion.

"What do you mean?"

Charley took a deep breath.

"I found the third level again."

For a moment Louisa simply stared at him.

"You're serious?" she asked.

"Yes."

Charley told her everything that had happened the previous evening. He described the hidden corridor, the staircase, the old-fashioned platform, and the ticket window.

Louisa listened carefully without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked down at the tickets again.

"And you bought these… there?" she asked slowly.

"Yes."

Louisa examined the paper carefully.

The tickets were printed in an old style, and the ink looked slightly faded.

"Galesburg," she read aloud.

Charley nodded.

"That's where Sam went."

Louisa looked up quickly.

"Sam?"

"Yes," Charley said, pulling out the letter from his pocket.

He handed it to her.

Louisa read the letter silently.

Her eyes widened as she reached the end.

"This letter says it was sent from 1894," she whispered.

"I know."

Louisa placed the letter on the table.

For several moments neither of them spoke.

Finally Louisa sighed.

"Charley… this is unbelievable."

"I know it sounds crazy," he said, "but I swear everything I told you is true."

Louisa looked again at the tickets.

"What happens if we go there?" she asked quietly.

Charley thought about the peaceful town Sam had described.

"Life would be simpler," he said.

"No crowded cities. No constant stress. Just quiet streets, fresh air, and a peaceful life."

Louisa remained silent for a moment.

Then she surprised him.

"Take me there."

Charley blinked in disbelief.

"You… you believe me?"

Louisa smiled slightly.

"I'm not sure if I believe it," she admitted. "But if there's even a small chance that what you're saying is true… I want to see it."

Charley felt excitement rush through him.

"Then we should go tonight," he said.

That evening the two of them entered Grand Central Terminal together.

The station looked just as crowded as usual.

Passengers hurried across the large hall while trains arrived and departed with loud whistles.

Louisa looked around.

"Are you sure about this?" she asked.

"Yes," Charley replied confidently.

He led her toward the lower levels of the station.

They walked through long corridors and narrow tunnels until the crowd slowly disappeared behind them.

Soon the station became quiet.

Louisa looked around nervously.

"This place feels strange," she said.

Charley nodded.

"This is where I found it."

At the end of the corridor stood the narrow staircase.

Louisa stared at it.

"This leads to the third level?" she asked.

"Yes."

They slowly began walking down the steps.

With each step, the bright electric lights grew dimmer.

Then suddenly they reached the bottom.

Louisa gasped softly.

The modern station had disappeared.

Instead, the hallway was lit by warm gas lamps.

Old wooden benches lined the walls.

And people walked calmly across the platform wearing clothes from another century.

"It's real," Louisa whispered.

Charley smiled.

"I told you."

They walked toward the ticket platform together.

A train stood waiting on the tracks, releasing small clouds of steam into the air.

Louisa looked around in amazement.

"It feels like we traveled back in time."

Charley nodded.

"That's exactly what happened."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the tickets.

The train conductor blew a whistle.

"Last call for Galesburg!" he announced.

Charley looked at Louisa.

"Are you ready?"

Louisa hesitated for only a moment.

Then she nodded.

"Yes."

Together they stepped toward the train.

Behind them, the mysterious third level remained hidden beneath the busy modern station.

And ahead of them waited a peaceful town in another time.

Their journey into the past had finally begun.
