Chapter 4 - The Silent Thunder Manual

The storm above Mount Yun did not fade with the night. By dawn, thick clouds still hung over the mountains surrounding the Silent Heavens Sect. Thunder rolled softly in the distance, like a sleeping giant shifting in its dreams.

To most of the sect's disciples, it was just another gloomy morning. But inside the abandoned Sky Meditation Pavilion, something far more important was about to begin.

Lin Aether sat cross-legged in the center of the broken stone floor. Before him floated Mei Yue, the ghostly former grand elder of the sect. Her silver air drifted slowly in the air like mist.

"Today," she said calmly, "you will begin true cultivation."

Lin inhaled slowly. His heart pounded. Five years. For five years he had tried and failed to cultivate. Now suddenly— Everything had changed.

"First," Mei continued, "you must understand something." She waved her hand, and spiritual energy gathered into faint glowing diagrams in the air.

"These are the meridians of the human body." Thin lines of light formed the outline of a person. Energy pathways spread through the limbs, chest and head.

"Most cultivation techniques guide Qi gently through these channels," she said. "Like water flowing through rivers."

Lin nodded slowly. "That makes sense."

Mei smiled faintly. "The Silent Thunder Manual is not like that." The glowing diagram suddenly changed. Lightning surged through the meridians. Violent. Explosive. Instead of flowing like water, the energy struck like thunder.

Lin stared. "The looks... dangerous."

"It is." Mei folded her arms. "Most cultivators fear lightning because Heavenly Tribulation uses it. But the founder of this sect realized something important."

Her eyes gleamed faintly. "If lightning is the weapon of heaven... Then mastering lightning means mastering heaven itself."

Lin swallowed. "Right. No pressure then."

Mei pointed toward him. "Close your eyes." Lin obeyed. "Now sense the Qi around you." This time it came easily. Ever since the seal cracked inside his body, the world felt completely different. Spiritual energy was everywhere.

In the wind.

In the stones.

In the clouds above the mountains.

But when the energy approached his body— It still hesitated. The golden seal near his heart pulsated faintly. Restricting the flow.

"Good." Mei said quietly. "Now guide your Qi toward your chest."

Lin concentrated. Slowly—

A thin stream of Qi entered his body. It was warm. Like sunlight touching his skin.

For most cultivators, this step took weeks.

For Lin however— It happened within minutes.

Mei's eyes narrowed slightly. "As expected..." Lin didn't hear her.

His entire focus was on the strange energy flowing through him. It moved through his meridians awkwardly at first. Like a river trying to find its path.

"Now," Mei said calmly. "activate the technique." Lin frowned. "Howw?"

She smiled. "Imagine lightning." Lin hesitated. Then he pictured the storm clouds above the mountains. Thunder. Lightning splitting the sky.

The moment he did— Something inside his body responded. The Qi he had gathered suddenly changed. The warm energy turned sharp.

Crackling. Electric. Lin's entire body trembled.

"Whoa—!"

Lightning-like Qi surged through his meridians. Pain exploded through his chest. His muscles tightened violently. But beneath the pain—

He felt power. Real power.

Mei watched silently. "The first step," she murmured, "is forcing the body to accept thunder."

Lin gritted his teeth. "This.... hurts!"

"Of course it does."

Lightning Qi continued racing through his body. It slammed against the golden seal near his heart. For a moment— Everything stopped. Then—

Crack. A faint fracture appeared in the seal. Lin gasped. The moment the crack formed, more spiritual energy rushed into his body from the surrounding mountain.

The wind outside suddenly surged. Trees bent. Clouds above the mountain began to move slowly.

Inside the pavilion, the air filled with sparks of blue lightning. Lin's eyes snapped open.

"Is this supposed to happen?!" Mei looked upward. Her expression had changed. "...No."

High above Mount Yun—

The storm clouds split open. Lightning flashed across the sky. But this time— The lightning did not strike randomly. It gathered. Directly above the Silent Heavens Sect.

Within the sect courtyard, several disciples looked up nervously. "Why is the storm getting worse?"

"Is that... lightning forming a vortex?" An elder stepped outside one of the halls. His eyes widened slightly. "That's not natural lightning." He whispered quietly. "That's heavenly Qi responding to someone."

Back in the pavilion, Lin struggled to control the lightning energy surging through his body. His meridians burned. But strangely—They did not collapse. Instead, they grew stronger.

Mei's gaze sharpened. "The Heavenbreaker bloodline... Your body can withstand lightning Qi." Lin barely heard her.

He felt like a storm was exploding inside him. The crack in the golden seal widened slightly. Another fragment broke off.

Suddenly—A burst of power erupted from Lin's body. Blue lightning flashed across the pavilion walls. Wind exploded outward. The broken pillars trembled violently.

Then—

Silence. The energy settled. Lin collapsed onto the floor, breathing heavily. Mei floated closer. "Well," she said calmly. "That was faster than expected."

Lin groaned. "My entire body feels like it was struck by lightning."

"That's cause it was. You've broken through."

Lin blinked. "Already?"

"Yes. You are now officially in the Qi Awakening Realm."

Lin stared at his hands. Five years of failure. And he advanced in one night. A slow smile spread across his face. "Not bad."

Mei raised her eyebrow. "Do not celebrate too early." She pointed upward. Lin looked toward the sky through the broken roof.

The storm above the mountain had not disappeared. If anything— It had grown stronger.

Dark clouds spiraled slowly over Mount Yun. And deep inside the clouds—Lightning flickered. Mei spoke quietly. "The heavens noticed the massive crack in your seal." Lin frowned. "That's bad, right?"

"Yes."

"How bad?"

She looked directly at him. "The next time the seal breaks further... Heavenly tribulation may descend."

Lin stared upward. Thunder echoed across the sky. He sighed. "...Great."

Far away, within the mountains of the Jade River Sect, Su Lian stood on a cliff overlooking the horizon. Her sword trembled faintly in it sheath. She looked north.

Toward Mount Yun. The wind carried the scent of lightning. Her eyes narrowed. "The storm again..." For some reason—

Her heart was racing.

Something important had begun. And the winds seemed to whisper a name she had never heard before, but it somehow felt familiar.

Lin Aether.
