Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: Real Footsteps

Opening night arrived in a blaze of lights and celebration.

The Riverside Cultural Center sparkled under the evening sky. Guests wandered through the finished atrium, gasping at the way light danced through the curved glass and the sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine filled the air. Everyone called it a triumph — a true sanctuary in the noisy city.

Ava stood near the center of the atrium in a simple black dress, smiling politely at compliments while her heart felt heavy. She had achieved her dream, but the victory felt incomplete without the man who had helped shape it from the future.

As the crowd thinned and the lights dimmed slightly for the evening ambiance, she wandered alone toward the skylight garden.

Then she heard them — real, solid footsteps echoing across the polished floor behind her.

A tall man with dark hair and kind, familiar eyes stepped into the soft golden light. He carried a worn leather portfolio and wore a quiet, almost disoriented smile.

"Extraordinary," he said, voice carrying that exact warm rasp that made Ava's knees weaken instantly. "The way the light falls… it feels exactly like someone designed it with love."

Ava froze, heart slamming against her ribs. Tears sprang to her eyes as recognition hit her like a wave.

"Theo?"

He tilted his head, surprised but undeniably drawn to her. "How did you know my name?"

She laughed through happy tears and took a shaky step forward. "Because I've known your voice for months. You told me to fight for the curve. You told me I was enough. You made me fall in love with a man I thought I could never touch."

Recognition slowly dawned in his eyes — like a long-forgotten dream rising powerfully to the surface. "I had the strangest feeling while reviewing these final plans… like someone had already loved this building with all her heart. Like someone had already loved me."

He reached out. Their fingers brushed, then intertwined. The touch was electric — warm, real, grounding, and full of years of impossible longing finally becoming reality.

Theo pulled her gently into his arms. Their first real kiss was slow, deep, and overflowing with emotion. It quickly turned heated, his hands sliding to her waist as hers tangled in his hair, months of voice-only desire exploding into physical passion right there in the beautiful atrium they had built together.

For the first time, there was no static. No fading signal. Only them — finally in the same time, the same place, the same heartbeat.
