Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: When the Trap Closes

The palace was quiet.

Too quiet.

Elira stood near the cradle, her expression calm, her movements slow and deliberate. To anyone watching, she looked like nothing more than a small child going about her day—silent, obedient, unaware.

That was the point.

The tray of food sat untouched on the table.

No poison this time.

Cassian had confirmed it.

Which meant—

They had changed their method.

Good.

Elira adjusted Kael's blanket gently, her fingers lingering for just a moment longer than necessary.

"…Stay with me," she whispered.

Then she stepped away.

Just slightly.

Just enough.

Time passed.

Minutes.

Long enough for tension to settle into the air like a second presence.

Then—

A sound.

Faint.

Almost nonexistent.

A soft shift behind the curtains.

Elira didn't turn.

Didn't react.

But her heart—

Started beating faster.

There.

From the corner of her eye, she saw it.

A shadow where there shouldn't be one.

Moving.

Watching.

Waiting.

The assassin had entered.

Silently.

Perfectly.

If she hadn't been expecting it—

She would have never noticed.

The figure blended into the darkness, crouched low, hidden between the folds of the heavy curtains. No sound. No breath. No presence.

But Elira knew.

And more importantly—

Cassian knew.

He was waiting.

Somewhere beyond the door.

Just like they planned.

Elira took a small step forward.

Away from the cradle.

Creating space.

Creating opportunity.

The shadow shifted.

Slow.

Precise.

A glint of metal caught the faint light for a fraction of a second.

A blade.

Small.

Thin.

Enough.

Elira's fingers curled slightly.

Now.

The assassin moved.

Fast.

Silent.

Deadly.

A single step—

A single motion—

The blade flew.

Straight toward the cradle.

Toward Kael.

"…Now."

Elira's voice cut through the silence.

Instant.

Sharp.

The door burst open.

"Move!"

Cassian's voice roared.

Steel clashed.

The blade never reached its target.

It struck—

Midair.

Deflected.

Sparks flickered as Cassian's sword intercepted it, his body already between the attack and the cradle.

The room exploded into motion.

"Secure the room!"

Guards flooded in.

The assassin didn't hesitate.

The moment the attack failed—

They moved again.

Not toward the exit.

But forward.

Desperate.

A second blade flashed into their hand.

A final attempt.

A suicidal strike.

Elira's eyes widened slightly.

Too fast—

Too close—

Then—

Something changed.

The air dropped.

Cold.

Heavy.

The assassin froze.

Mid-step.

Their body locked in place as if something invisible had wrapped around them.

The shadows—

Moved.

Not subtly this time.

Not gently.

They stretched.

Twisted.

And surged upward from the ground like living things.

Wrapping around the assassin's limbs.

Holding them.

Stopping them.

Completely.

Silence crashed into the room.

The guards halted.

Cassian's sword remained raised—

But even he didn't move.

Because this—

This wasn't normal.

The assassin struggled.

But the shadows tightened.

Restricting.

Crushing.

Unforgiving.

Elira turned slowly.

Her breath caught.

Kael.

He was awake.

His small hand slightly raised.

His dark eyes open—

And for a brief moment—

They glowed.

Not with light.

But with something deeper.

Something ancient.

Something that didn't belong.

Then—

The shadows stilled.

The glow vanished.

And Kael—

Blink—

Fell silent again.

As if nothing had happened.

As if he were just a child.

But the assassin—

Remained trapped.

Cassian was the first to move.

"Seize them!"

The guards rushed forward immediately, binding the assassin tightly. This time, there was no escape.

No second chance.

The threat was contained.

But the room—

Remained silent.

Because everyone had seen it.

Everyone had felt it.

Cassian turned slowly.

His gaze moved from the restrained assassin—

To the cradle.

To Kael.

Then—

To Elira.

Their eyes met.

No words were needed.

He knew.

She knew.

The secret—

Was no longer safe.

Elira's fingers trembled slightly as she stepped closer to the cradle, her hand gently reaching for Kael's.

Warm.

Alive.

But no longer hidden.

"…It's okay," she whispered softly.

Not sure if she was reassuring him—

Or herself.

Cassian approached slowly.

Measured.

Careful.

"…That was not normal," he said quietly.

Not a question.

A fact.

Elira didn't look at him.

"…No."

Silence.

Heavy.

Dangerous.

Behind them, the assassin struggled weakly against their restraints.

"Commander," one of the guards said, "what are your orders?"

Cassian didn't answer immediately.

His gaze remained fixed on Kael.

On the child who had just done something impossible.

Something terrifying.

Something powerful.

Then—

"Take the prisoner," he said. "Alive."

A pause.

His voice lowered slightly.

"No one speaks of what happened here."

The command was clear.

Absolute.

The guards nodded immediately.

"Yes, Commander!"

The assassin was dragged out.

The room slowly emptied.

Until only two remained.

Cassian.

And Elira.

The silence stretched between them.

Long.

Unavoidable.

Finally—

"…You knew," Cassian said.

Elira didn't deny it.

"…I suspected."

Another pause.

Then—

"He's dangerous."

The words were careful.

Measured.

Not accusation.

But truth.

Elira's grip tightened slightly around Kael's hand.

"Yes."

A breath.

Then—

"But he's not alone."

Her voice was soft.

But unwavering.

Cassian studied her.

For a long moment.

Then—

"…No," he said quietly.

"He's not."

And just like that—

The balance shifted.

Because now—

The truth had been seen.

The secret had been exposed.

And the game—

Had reached a new level.
