Chapter 3 - “When You’re Not Alone”

They ran through the long, empty corridors as the sound of heavy footsteps echoed behind them, growing louder with every passing second. Arjun's breath came in short, uneven bursts, his chest burning and legs aching, yet he forced himself to keep moving. Kabir led the way, turning sharply through narrow hallways as if he knew every corner of the building, but Arjun's attention wasn't fully on the path ahead. It kept drifting to the warmth in his hand. Aanya's fingers were wrapped around his, firm yet gentle, pulling him forward whenever he slowed. Her grip didn't just guide him—it grounded him, keeping his racing thoughts steady even in the middle of chaos. "Don't let go," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper, and without thinking, Arjun tightened his hold. "I won't," he replied, surprising even himself. For a brief moment, the fear inside him faded.

They turned into another corridor where flickering lights cast long, broken shadows across the cracked walls. Dust hung in the air, making it harder to breathe. "Where are we going?" Arjun asked, struggling to keep up. "Somewhere they can't reach easily," Kabir answered quickly, though Arjun could hear the uncertainty hidden beneath his tone. A loud crash suddenly echoed behind them, like something heavy smashing through a wall, sending a chill down Arjun's spine. "They're breaking through," Kabir said. Just then, Aanya stopped. Arjun almost stumbled forward in surprise. "Why did you stop?" he asked, confused and breathless. She turned toward him, her expression calm despite the danger closing in. "We can't keep running," she said. Kabir spun around immediately, frustration clear on his face. "Are you serious right now?" Aanya didn't flinch. "They'll catch us eventually." Kabir clenched his jaw. "So your plan is to just stand here and fight?" Aanya didn't look at him—she looked at Arjun. "Yes."

Arjun froze. "Fight?" Fear crept back into his chest, tightening his throat, but then Aanya's hand tightened around his again, pulling him back from the edge of panic. "You're not alone this time," she said softly. Those words struck something deep inside him. Not alone. For so long, he had lived feeling invisible, ignored, like he didn't matter—but right now, standing beside her, he felt something different. Something stronger. Kabir let out a frustrated sigh. "Fine. But if this goes wrong—" "It won't," Aanya replied calmly. The footsteps behind them grew louder, heavier, until three dark figures appeared at the far end of the corridor, slowly stepping forward. Arjun's heartbeat thundered in his ears. "They're here…" Kabir stepped forward protectively. "Stay behind me." "No," Aanya said, moving beside Arjun instead. "We stand together." Arjun looked at her, surprised by her confidence. Her eyes were calm, yet filled with determination. "Trust me," she whispered. He swallowed hard and nodded. "…Okay."

The moment stretched into silence before the attackers suddenly moved. One of them lunged forward with incredible speed, and Kabir reacted instantly, blocking the attack with force that echoed through the corridor. "Now, Arjun!" Kabir shouted. But Arjun didn't move. Fear froze his body, locking his muscles in place. "I can't…" he whispered. Aanya stepped closer, her hand moving from his to his wrist, warm and steady. "Hey…" she said softly. Arjun looked at her, his fear reflected in his eyes. "You can," she said, her voice calm but firm. "Just believe in yourself… once." Something shifted inside him—not because of power, but because of her. Arjun closed his eyes for a moment, took a shaky breath, and clenched his fists. "…Okay." When he opened his eyes again, they had changed. A faint glow surrounded his hands, and the air around him began to tremble. The attackers hesitated. Kabir smirked slightly. "That's it." Arjun stepped forward, his fear slowly turning into determination. "I'm not running anymore."

The energy inside him surged, stronger and wilder than before, building rapidly until it could no longer be contained. Then, in a sudden burst, it exploded outward. A powerful wave of energy shot through the corridor, slamming into the attackers and throwing them back violently. They crashed into the walls, cracks spreading across the concrete as dust filled the air. Silence followed. Arjun stood there, breathing heavily, his hands trembling as he stared at them in disbelief. "I… did it…" he whispered. Aanya smiled softly. "I knew you could." Arjun looked at her, and for a moment, everything slowed—the chaos, the danger, the fear. All of it faded until there was only her. The way she looked at him—not with fear or doubt, but with trust—and something deeper he couldn't quite understand.

But the moment didn't last. The air suddenly changed, growing heavier, colder, as if something far more dangerous had entered. Kabir's expression darkened instantly. "…No." From the shadows, a tall figure stepped forward, calm and still, yet terrifying in a way that made Arjun's chest tighten. He could feel it immediately—this one was different. Aanya's grip on his hand tightened again. "Stay close," she whispered. The man looked at Arjun, then at Aanya, and a faint smile appeared on his face. "So… this is the boy… and the girl," he said slowly. Arjun frowned, forcing himself to stand his ground. "What do you want?" The man ignored the question, his gaze sharpening as he studied them. "You two together…" he paused, his smile widening slightly, "…that's exactly what we were afraid of." Arjun's heart skipped. "What does that mean?" The man's voice dropped, colder than before. "It means… if you stay together—" Silence filled the corridor as Aanya looked at Arjun and he looked back at her, his hand tightening around hers, refusing to let go. "…you'll become something even we can't control."
