Chapter 4 - The Space Between Us

The music started before she was ready.

Again.

Seoryeon's body moved on instinct now step, turn, shift but something still felt… off.

Not wrong.

Just not right enough.

Her foot landed half a second late.

She stopped.

Frustration tightened in her chest.

"…Again."

"Or you could take a break."

She turned.

Jeongyeon leaned against the wall, arms crossed, watching her like she'd been there for a while.

Not judging.

Just… observing.

"I'm fine," Seoryeon said automatically.

Jeongyeon raised an eyebrow.

"You've said that three times in the last ten minutes."

Seoryeon hesitated.

"…I need to get it right."

Jeongyeon pushed herself off the wall and walked closer.

"Yeah. And if you keep going like that, you won't get anything right."

Her tone wasn't soft.

But it wasn't harsh either.

Just honest.

Seoryeon looked away slightly.

"…I don't have time to slow down."

Jeongyeon stopped in front of her.

"You do," she said simply. "You're just choosing not to."

A pause.

Then

"Sit."

"…What?"

"Sit," she repeated, nodding toward the floor.

Seoryeon frowned.

"I don't"

"You're shaking."

That stopped her.

She hadn't noticed.

But now that Jeongyeon said it

Her legs were unsteady.

Silently, she sat.

Jeongyeon dropped down beside her without making a big deal out of it.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The quiet wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… there.

"You're improving fast," Jeongyeon said after a while.

Seoryeon stiffened slightly.

"…Is that a problem?"

"No."

A small pause.

"It just means people are going to start paying attention."

Seoryeon's fingers tightened slightly.

"I know."

Jeongyeon glanced at her.

"Then don't burn out before that happens."

Simple.

Direct.

But it landed.

Seoryeon exhaled slowly.

"…Thanks."

Jeongyeon shrugged like it didn't matter.

But she didn't leave right away.

The room was louder now.

More trainees.

More movement.

More pressure.

Seoryeon stood near the back this time, watching as a group ran through choreography together.

This wasn't her usual practice.

This was… different.

"Why are you hiding back there?"

She turned.

Nayeon stood a few steps away, hands on her hips, smiling like she already knew the answer.

"I'm not hiding," Seoryeon said.

Nayeon laughed lightly.

"Sure."

She grabbed Seoryeon's wrist before she could react and pulled her forward.

"Come on. If you're going to be here, you might as well be seen."

Before she could argue, she was standing in line with the others.

Music started.

This time

It wasn't just about her.

She moved with them.

Not leading.

Not following.

Trying to match.

At first, she focused too much.

Overthinking again.

"Relax your shoulders," someone said from the side.

Jihyo.

She didn't stop dancing, but her voice carried clearly.

"Feel the beat, don't chase it."

Seoryeon adjusted.

Slightly.

It helped.

Next to her, Dahyun spun a little too dramatically and nearly bumped into her.

"Oops sorry!"

Then she grinned.

"Don't look so serious, it's not a final stage yet."

Seoryeon blinked.

"…I always look like this."

"That's the problem," Dahyun said, laughing.

A small, unexpected smile pulled at Seoryeon's lips.

The music continued.

This time

It felt… lighter.

Seoryeon stepped out of formation, grabbing a water bottle.

Her breathing was steady now.

Better.

"You improved again."

She looked up.

Jihyo stood nearby, arms loosely crossed.

Watching.

Seoryeon straightened slightly.

"…I'm trying to."

Jihyo nodded.

"I can tell."

A pause.

"But don't rely on sudden improvements."

Seoryeon's chest tightened slightly.

"…What do you mean?"

Jihyo's gaze was steady.

"Consistency matters more."

That hit deeper than it should have.

Because it was exactly what she didn't have yet.

"…I know."

Jihyo studied her for a second longer.

Then

"You'll get there," she said simply.

Not praise.

Not comfort.

Just belief.

Seoryeon looked down at her hands.

They weren't shaking anymore.

Later, when the room emptied out again

She found herself sitting near the wall.

Exhausted.

But calmer.

Someone sat beside her.

Quietly.

No announcement.

She glanced over.

Mina.

Neither of them spoke at first.

After a moment, Mina held out a small snack.

"You didn't eat earlier."

Seoryeon blinked.

"…You noticed?"

Mina nodded slightly.

Seoryeon hesitated, then took it.

"…Thank you."

They sat there in silence.

But it didn't feel empty.

It felt… understood.

Seoryeon leaned her head back against the wall.

For once

Her thoughts weren't overwhelming.

Across the room, she caught movement.

Sana and Momo.

Talking.

Laughing lightly.

For a moment

Her chest felt tight again.

But not in a painful way.

Just… something new.

Something she didn't have a name for yet.

Seoryeon closed her eyes briefly.

This world still didn't fully feel like hers.

But

For the first time

It didn't feel like she was alone in it either.
