"Just a minute." That's what they said but neither of them moved. Time didn't stop but it softened. The world outside that room faded not gone just… distant.
Cassy didn't pull her hand away, didn't remind him of the rules again because right now there were no rules in here only choices and she was still choosing this.
Caleb watched her quietly not analyzing, not calculating just… taking her in like this was the first moment in a long time he didn't have to think three steps ahead.
"…You're still counting the time, aren't you?" he said softly.
Cassy let out a faint breath. "…A little." Honest, always honest with him.
Caleb's thumb brushed lightly against her hand. A small movement but it grounded her instantly. "Don't," he murmured. A pause. "Just for now."
Just for now, that phrase again, temporary but real.
Cassy hesitated because she always thought ahead, always calculated but this time she let it go just a little.
"…Okay," she whispered.
And something shifted again, subtle but undeniable. The space between them closed completely not rushed, not impulsive just… inevitable.
Caleb's other hand came up resting lightly at her waist, still careful, still giving her the chance to stop this, she didn't, instead, her free hand found his sleeve holding onto him like she needed to make sure he was real because after all the distance, all the restraint. This felt almost unreal.
"…This is dangerous," she said quietly.
Caleb nodded. "I know." A pause. "But it's also ours."
That word again. Ours. And somehow that made the risk feel different not smaller but worth it.
Cassy looked up at him, really looked no walls, no control just feeling.
"…A little longer," she said not asking, not questioning but choosing.
Caleb didn't hesitate. "As long as you want."
And that was it, no conditions, no limits just trust. The kind they hadn't been able to show anywhere else. He pulled her closer this time without hesitation and she let him completely.
Her head rested lightly against his chest. His arms around her steady, certain and for the first time in what felt like forever. Everything slowed down enough for them to feel it. Not the pressure, not the risk just this. The quiet, the closeness, the way nothing else mattered when they were like this.
Minutes passed or maybe longer neither of them checked because for once, time wasn't something they were trying to control. It was something they were letting happen eventually.
Cassy shifted slightly not pulling away just enough to look up at him again.
"…We can't stay here forever," she said softly.
Caleb gave a faint smile. "I know." A pause. "But we don't have to leave it behind either."
And that was the difference now. They weren't choosing between this and everything else. They were learning how to carry it with them. Even when they had to step back. Even when the world came rushing in again.
Cassy nodded slowly. "…Okay."
Not an ending, not a goodbye just… understanding. They didn't let go right away. Of course they didn't because when you finally have something real, you don't rush to leave it even if you know you have to eventually.
They stepped back slowly, eeluctantly but not completely because something had changed. Not the situation, not the risks but them. Stronger, clearer, more certain than before.
And as they walked out of that room separately, carefully. They both carried the same thing with them. That moment, that closeness, that quiet promise that no matter what happened next they would find their way back here again and again.
As many times as it took.
