Chapter 128 - CHAPTER 127: SEPARATION

🖤

The decision came the next morning no warning, no buildup just a message. Direct and official.

Cassy read it once then again her expression didn't change but something in her posture did.

Across the building, Caleb got the same notification, same subject, same directive.

Executive Reassignment — Effective Immediately

Silence followed because that wasn't a test. That was action.

A knock hit Cassy's door minutes later. "Come in."

It opened and Caleb stepped inside no hesitation, no distance this time. "…You saw it."

Cassy nodded. "Yes."

A pause, heavy. "They're separating us," he said. Not a question, a statement.

Cassy exhaled slowly. "Different divisions." Another pause. "Different reporting lines."

There it was not just distance, structural separation something they couldn't adjust around.

"…This is their answer," Caleb said.

Cassy nodded once. "They couldn't define the pattern." A pause. "So they removed it."

Silence because that was exactly what this was not proof, not confirmation, control. If they couldn't understand it they would eliminate it.

Caleb ran a hand through his hair. "…This changes everything."

Cassy didn't respond immediately because it did. Every interaction, every decision, every moment they had managed so carefully gone replaced by something harder. Distance they couldn't control.

"…When?" he asked.

Cassy glanced at the message again. "…Today."

That hit immediate no transition, no preparation just done.

Caleb let out a short breath. "…They didn't even wait."

"No," Cassy said quietly because they didn't need to this wasn't about negotiation. It was about decision, final.

Silence filled the room again but this time was different, heavier more real because this wasn't something they could adjust, this wasn't something they could balance, this was being forced on them.

"…So that's it?" Caleb said. A pause. "They just… separate us?"

Cassy met his gaze. "…For now."

That wasn't reassurance, that was reality because "for now" could mean anything temporary, permanent, undefined.

Caleb stepped closer this time not stopping.

"…And what do we do?"

There it was the question that mattered not strategy, not perception, them.

Cassy's breath slowed. "…We follow it."

The words came out steady, controlled but they landed hard.

Caleb's expression tightened. "That's it?" A beat. "We just accept it?"

Cassy held his gaze. "…We don't have a choice."

Silence because that wasn't what he wanted to hear but it was true.

"They've made the decision," she continued. A pause. "If we push back now—" Another pause. "It confirms everything they're already questioning."

That was the trap not just separation, reaction they were being watched for it.

Caleb exhaled sharply. "…So we just let them control everything?"

Cassy shook her head slightly. "No." A pause. "We control how we respond."

That sounded like before but it wasn't because this time they weren't managing proximity. They were dealing with absence and absence was harder.

"…Different divisions," Caleb said quietly.

Cassy nodded. "Yes." A pause. "Different paths."

That word lingered. Paths. Because now they wouldn't just be balancing something together, they'd be navigating it separately and that changed everything.

The room fell silent again but this time there was no solution in it, no adjustment, no strategy to fix it just reality because the board had made its move and for the first time they weren't reacting to pressure. They were reacting to loss, real, immediate and neither of them knew yet what that was going to do to them or if what they had could survive it.
