Chapter 123 - CHAPTER 122: NO MORE WAITING

🖤

The silence didn't last. It couldn't not after that.

Cassy stayed where she was still trying to pull herself back into control but something had already shifted.

Because Caleb hadn't stepped back, hadn't corrected himself, hadn't rebuilt the distance and that alone was different.

"…You need to leave," Cassy said quietly, it wasn't sharp not cold but it was firm because it had to be.

Caleb didn't move. "I'm not walking away from this." There it was clear, unfiltered.

Cassy's jaw tightened slightly. "This isn't about walking away." A pause. "It's about control."

Caleb shook his head. "No." A step closer. "It's about what this is doing to us." That word again. Us.

Cassy exhaled slowly. "…We knew this wouldn't be easy."

"Not easy is one thing," he said. A pause. "This isn't manageable anymore."

Silence because that was the line they hadn't said out loud until now.

Cassy stood finally moving, finally meeting him where he was. "…So what are you saying?" Her voice was steady but there was something underneath it, something waiting.

Caleb didn't hesitate. "We stop playing this halfway version of it." A beat. "We either do this right—" Another beat. "Or we stop pretending we can."

The words hung between them heavily unavoidable because that wasn't a suggestion, that was a choice.

Cassy's chest tightened. "…Define 'do this right.'"

Caleb held her gaze. "No more hiding what this is." A pause. "No more acting like it doesn't affect everything." Another pause. "We stop letting them define it for us."

And there it was the shift not control, not balance something else entirely.

Cassy's voice dropped. "…That's not realistic."

Caleb didn't back down. "It's honest."

"That's not enough," she said. A beat. "It has consequences."

"I know," he replied. A pause. "I'm choosing it anyway."

Silence because that changed everything.

Cassy searched his expression. "…You're serious."

"I've been serious," he said. A step closer. "But now I'm done pretending this is something we can just manage."

That hit because she had been managing it, holding it together, making it work even when it hurt.

"…You're asking me to risk everything," she said.

Caleb didn't hesitate. "I'm asking you to stop sacrificing everything."

The words landed deep, too deep because she had been piece by piece, moment by moment letting go of what she wanted to protect what they had built and now he was asking her to choose differently.

"…You don't get to decide that alone," she said. A pause. "This affects both of us."

"I know," he said. Another pause. "That's why I'm not deciding for you." A beat. "I'm deciding for me."

And there it was the point of no return because this wasn't just a discussion anymore, it was a line being drawn.

"If you want to keep doing this—" he added, A pause. "the way we've been doing it—" Another pause. "I'll respect that."

Silence because that sounded like compromise but it wasn't, it was distance, real distance not the controlled kind. The kind that meant stepping back for good.

"But I'm not staying in something that's breaking you," he finished.

That was the truth underneath everything not rebellion, not defiance, concern, care. Something real enough to risk everything for.

Cassy's breath slowed, uneven now because this was the moment. The one where everything shifted not because of the board, not because of the pressure but because of a choice. Her choice.

And whatever she said next wouldn't just affect the situation, it would define them completely.
