🖤
Adrian didn't bring it up immediately not while they were going over the terms not while everything still had structure because that wasn't the moment. He waited until the discussion ended, until the documents were closed, until there was nothing left to hide behind.
Then he shifted. "…Can we talk for a second?" His tone was calm, even but not casual.
Cassy felt it first that change. The one that meant this wasn't about work anymore.
Caleb didn't hesitate. "Go ahead."
Adrian looked between them just once. "…No," he said. A pause. "I mean separately."
Silence because that mattered.
Cassy's fingers tightened slightly. "…There's no need for that."
Adrian held her gaze. "I think there is." Not aggressive, not confrontational just… certain.
Caleb stepped in. "What exactly are you asking?"
Adrian didn't look away. "I'm asking what just happened."
There it was, direct, unfiltered.
Silence because there wasn't a clean answer.
"Nothing happened," Cassy said immediately controlled.
Adrian nodded slightly. "…That's not what I saw." A pause. "And more importantly—" He glanced between them again. "That's not what it looked like."
There it was again perception always perception.
Caleb's voice stayed steady. "You're reading into it."
"Am I?" Adrian asked. A beat. "Because I don't usually read into things that precisely."
Silence because that was true.
Adrian wasn't reactive, be was observant, measured and if he said he saw something, he did.
Cassy stepped in. "…It was a moment."
Adrian's gaze shifted to her. "What kind of moment?"
A pause because that question didn't leave room for vague answers.
"…A lapse," she said finally.
The word settled not comfortable but accurate.
Adrian exhaled slowly. "…That's what I was afraid of."
Caleb's expression tightened. "Don't overstate it."
"I'm not," Adrian replied. A pause. "I'm evaluating it."
That word landed heavier than the rest because now this wasn't just observation. It was judgment.
"You both know what's at stake," Adrian continued. His voice still calm but sharper now. "This isn't just about you anymore."
Cassy didn't argue because she knew that.
"You had one moment," he added. A pause. "And I walked in." Another pause. "What happens when it's not me?"
Silence because that was the real question. What happens when it's someone who won't keep it contained? Someone who won't just observe but act?
Caleb exhaled slowly. "It won't happen again."
Adrian looked at him, really looked. "…You're sure about that?"
A beat because certainty was the problem.
Cassy answered instead. "It has to be."
Silence because that wasn't confidence, that was necessity.
Adrian nodded once. "…Then you need to treat it that way." A pause. "No gray area." Another pause. "No 'almost.'"
That landed harder than anything else because that's exactly what it had been. Almost.
"And if you can't—" He stopped but he didn't need to finish.
They already knew if they couldn't control it, the board would and next time there wouldn't be terms just consequences.
Adrian stepped back slightly. "…I'm on your side." A pause. "But I can't protect you from something you won't control."
That was the line not a threat, a limit.
Cassy nodded slowly. "We understand."
Caleb didn't respond but his expression said enough because now this wasn't just pressure. It was a warning, clear, immediate and next time they wouldn't get a quiet conversation. They'd get consequences, real ones.
Adrian gave them one last look then turned and walked out leaving the silence behind heavier than before because now wasn't just about what they felt. It was about whether they could stop it before it cost them everything.
