Chapter 105 - CHAPTER 104: THE LINE THEY CAN’T CROSS

🖤

The room was already full. By the time Caleb walked in, every seat at the long table was occupied. Board members, legal, advisors are all waiting not casually, not neutrally waiting with purpose.

Cassy stepped in beside him not behind, not separate, beside and that alone it said enough. A few glances shifted not subtle, not hidden because now there was nothing to hide.

"Let's begin." The chairperson's voice cut cleanly through the room. No small talk, no easing in, straight to it.

"We've reviewed your statement." A pause. "And the implications that follow."

Caleb didn't sit yet neither did Cassy because this wasn't just a discussion. This was a decision.

"You've acknowledged a personal relationship," another member added. "And chosen to make it public." A pause. "Without prior consultation."

Caleb's voice was steady. "It wasn't a decision that required permission."

That landed not well. A few looks exchanged across the table, tight, measured.

"This isn't about permission," the chairperson replied. "It's about governance." A pause. "And risk."

Cassy remained still but she could feel it. The direction this was going.

"We need to address the conflict," another voice said, direct, unfiltered.

"There is no conflict," Caleb responded immediately, certain.

"There is perception of one," came the reply and that was the problem, always had been.

"Perception doesn't dictate reality," Caleb said.

"But it does dictate impact," the chairperson countered.

Silence because both were true but only one mattered here. A document slid across the table towards him. Formal, prepared.

"We've outlined a proposed solution." A pause. "Structural separation."

Cassy's chest tightened because she already knew what that meant.

"Effective immediately," the member continued, "one of you will step away from direct involvement in any shared operational scope."

There it was, clear, final, a choice. Silence filled the room, heavy, unavoidable.

Caleb didn't reach for the document, didn't look down. His gaze stayed forward. "And if we don't agree?"

The chairperson didn't hesitate. "Then we escalate." A pause. "Formally."

Which meant investigations, restrictions, potential removal, everything.

Cassy felt it settle not as surprise but as confirmation. This was the moment. She stepped forward slightly before Caleb could respond. "I'll step away." The words came clean, calm, certain.

"No." Immediate, sharp. Caleb didn't even look at her. "You don't get to make that decision for both of us," he said low, controlled.

Cassy turned to him. "I'm not." A pause. "I'm making it for myself."

Silence because that wasn't the same as before. This wasn't a private decision, this was public binding.

"You've already done enough," Caleb said. His voice tightening slightly. "You're not giving them more."

Cassy held his gaze. "…This isn't about them." A pause. "It's about what happens if we don't."

Because they both knew this wouldn't stop here.

"It's not your responsibility to fix this," he replied.

"And it's not yours to carry alone," she said back.

Silence because that was the truth they kept circling. The board watched quietly, observing because this was the decision.

"Enough." The chairperson's voice cut through again. "You'll need to decide." A pause. "Now." No delay, no extension just choice.

Cassy's voice softened but didn't waver. "…I'll do it."

Caleb turned to her fully this time and for the first time there was no restraint left in his expression. "No." A step closer. "This ends here."

The room stilled because something in his tone shifted everything.

"You want separation?" he said looking back at the board. A pause. "Then it won't be her."

Cassy's breath caught. "…Caleb."

But he didn't look at her, didn't hesitate, didn't reconsider. "It'll be me."

Everything stopped because that wasn't expected by them, not by her.

"You're proposing to step down?" someone asked.

Caleb's voice stayed steady. "I'm proposing to remove myself from any structure that makes this your decision." A pause. "If there's no position to leverage—" Another pause. "Then there's no conflict to control."

Silence because that changed everything not a compromise, not an adjustment, a shift, a sacrifice.

"…You don't have to do this," Cassy said quietly.

Caleb finally looked at her and there was nothing uncertain left. "I do." A pause. "Because I'm not losing you to keep a position."

That was it, the line clearer than ever and now everything had changed again not because of pressure but because of what he chose to give up for her, for them and there was no going back.
