Chapter 97 - CHAPTER 96: THE SPACE BETWEEN US

🖤

It didn't happen dramatically. No goodbye, no final moment that marked the end of something just… space. Quiet, unavoidable.

The next morning felt different not because anything had visibly changed but because everything had.

Cassy walked into the office and for the first time there was nowhere specific she needed to be. No direct line to his office, no immediate reason to stand beside him just… distance and that was new. She moved through the floor like she always did. Professional, composed but now there was a shift in how people looked at her. Less curiosity more understanding like they finally knew where she stood or more accurately where she didn't.

Across the building, Caleb felt it too. Not because of reports, not because of updates but because of absence. No knock on his door, no quiet presence across the room, no instinct to glance up and find her there. Nothing. His office felt bigger and emptier which didn't make sense because everything else had gone back to normal. Meetings resumed. Deals progressing. Pressure easing. Everything working except this.

By midday, they hadn't crossed paths. Not accidentally, not intentionally and that wasn't something they had planned. It just… happened.

Cassy stood near the window in one of the smaller conference rooms reviewing transition notes, finalizing details, everything that made this official, everything that made it real.

A soft knock broke the quiet. She didn't turn right away. "…Come in."

The door opened and even before she looked, she knew. Caleb stepped inside not rushed, not hesitant just… deliberate.

"…We haven't seen each other today." The words were simple but they carried something heavier.

Cassy turned to face him. "…We've been busy." A neutral answer, too neutral because that wasn't the real reason.

Silence settled between them different from before. Less intense but somehow more distant.

Caleb stepped further into the room. "…This is what you meant." Not a question, a realization.

Cassy didn't deny it. "Yes." A pause. "This is part of it."

The space, the separation, the lack of overlap. All intentional, all real.

Caleb exhaled slowly. "…It's more than I expected."

That surprised her. "…You thought it would be easier?"

He shook his head slightly. "No." A pause. "But I didn't think it would feel like this."

Silence because that was honest and honesty didn't soften anything it just made it clearer.

Cassy looked at him. "…It's necessary." Her voice was steady but quieter than usual.

Caleb nodded. "I know." A pause. "That doesn't make it less real."

Silence stretched again because now they weren't arguing, they weren't deciding, they were just… feeling the result.

"…Are you okay?" he asked. The question was softer now. Less guarded.

Cassy nodded. "I am." A pause. "Are you?"

Caleb hesitated just briefly then, "Yes." But it wasn't as certain not as steady.

And she noticed. Of course she did. "…You don't have to pretend with me," she said quietly.

Caleb gave a faint, almost tired exhale. "I'm not pretending." A pause. "I'm adjusting." That word felt accurate but incomplete because adjusting didn't mean accepting. Not yet.

Cassy stepped a little closer not closing the distance completely just enough to feel less far. "…We knew this wouldn't be easy."

Caleb nodded. "We did." A pause. "But knowing and feeling aren't the same thing."

Silence because that was the truth of it. They stood there not as close as before, not as distant as strangers. Somewhere in between and maybe that was the hardest part. Not losing everything but learning how to exist in something that had changed without losing what still mattered.

"…We'll figure it out," Cassy said softly. Not as a promise, not as certainty just… belief.

Caleb looked at her. "…We will."

And for now that was enough not perfect, not easy but real and sometimes that was the only thing that actually held even in the space between them.
