The room felt smaller, quieter like everything had narrowed down to one thing. One decision, one moment.
Cassy's finger hovered over the trackpad not shaking, not uncertain just… aware.
Caleb didn't move, didn't interrupt, didn't try to stop her again because he knew this wasn't something he could take from her. Only something he could witness.
"…Once I do this," she said softly, "There's no undo."
Caleb's voice came just as quiet. "I know." A pause. "And I still don't agree with it."
That almost made her smile just a little. "I know that too."
Silence because this wasn't about agreement anymore it was about choice.
Cassy took a slow breath. Everything felt clear not easy, not light but clear.
She clicked. Send.
The sound was barely there soft almost nothing but the impact, immediate, irreversible, it was done. The email disappeared from her screen, moved, delivered. And just like that the line had been crossed.
Cassy exhaled slowly not relieved, not overwhelmed just… steady. "It's done."
The words felt heavier out loud because now there was no space between decision and reality.
Caleb didn't respond right away. He stood there still processing not the action. He already understood that but what it meant.
"You really went through with it." Not disbelief just… confirmation.
Cassy nodded once. "Yes."
Silence filled the room because now there was nothing left to argue. Nothing left to stop only something to face.
Caleb stepped closer not fast, not forceful just… deliberate. "And now?" he asked.
The question wasn't simple it wasn't just about work, it was about everything.
Cassy met his gaze. "Now we deal with what comes next." A pause. "Together."
That word, it still held even now, even after this.
Caleb studied her for a moment then nodded. "Okay." Simple but it meant something not agreement but acceptance of reality of what she chose, of what they were stepping into now.
Outside, the response was already starting, notifications, emails, movement across departments because something had shifted. Not quietly this time, not underneath this was visible, real and it would ripple through the company, through the board, through everything they had been holding steady.
Inside, they stood in the aftermath not broken, not distant but changed because this was the first time something had actually been given up. Not just adjusted, not just protected, let go.
And that made everything that remained even more real, even more intentional, even more theirs.
Cassy looked at him. "…You're still here." A small, quiet observation.
Caleb didn't hesitate. "I said I wasn't letting you walk away." A pause. "And I meant from this."
That landed because even if she stepped out of one world, she hadn't stepped out of his and maybe that was what mattered now. Not where she stood professionally but where they stood with each other.
And that hadn't changed not even after the click, not even after everything shifted because some choices don't end things. They just reveal what was always going to stay.
