Chapter 86 - CHAPTER 85: A MOMENT THAT DOESN’T ASK FOR ANYTHING

🖤

The intensity didn't disappear, it didn't vanish, it didn't magically become easy but it shifted, softened just enough to breathe again.

They were still standing close not touching but not distant either and for once neither of them was trying to define anything. No questions, no decisions just… quiet.

"…We're really bad at keeping things simple," Cassy murmured, a faint smile touched her lips, small but real.

Caleb almost smiled too. "I don't think we've ever tried."

That earned a soft exhale from her. "…That's fair."

Silence followed but this one it wasn't heavy anymore, it wasn't filled with everything they hadn't figured out, it was… lighter like the moment didn't need to carry everything at once.

Cassy glanced around the office then back at him. "…Do you ever just stop thinking about everything?"

Caleb raised a brow slightly. "Not often." A pause. "But right now… a little."

That surprised her. "…Really?"

Caleb nodded once. "Yes." A faint pause. "Because you're here."

That line, it didn't hit as intensely as before. Not because it meant less but because it wasn't carrying pressure this time. It was just… true and somehow, that made it softer.

Cassy shook her head slightly. "…You do that so easily."

Caleb tilted his head. "Do what?"

"Make things feel steady," she said. A pause. "Even when they're not."

He didn't answer right away because he knew, that wasn't something he could fully explain.

"…I think it's because I don't try to control this part," he said finally.

Cassy blinked slightly. "…This part?"

Caleb nodded. "Yes." A pause. "Everything else, I manage." Another pause. "But this—" He gestured slightly between them. "I don't."

Silence because that, that was new. Not control, not structure just… letting something exist and that, that changed the feeling completely.

Cassy leaned back slightly against the desk. Not pulling away just… settling. "…That might be the first time you've ever admitted that," she said. A hint of teasing in her voice now.

Caleb's lips curved faintly. "Don't get used to it."

That made her smile. A real one this time. Not small not careful just… genuine and for a moment, everything else faded. The pressure, the expectations, the questions, all of it just… quiet.

"You know what I miss?" Cassy said suddenly.

Caleb looked at her. "What?"

"…Before all of this." A pause. "When things were complicated in a different way." He considered that. "…When you argued with me about schedules?"

She laughed softly. "Yes." A small pause. "That felt easier."

Caleb nodded slightly. "It was." A beat. "But it wasn't better."

Silence because that, that mattered. Easy didn't mean right and this, this wasn't easy but it was real.

Cassy looked at him again and this time there was no weight behind it. No question, no hesitation just… presence.

"…I like this version of you," she said softly.

Caleb raised a brow slightly. "This version?"

She nodded. "Yes." A pause. "The one who doesn't try to control everything."

A faint smile touched his lips. "…He only shows up when it matters."

That made her smile again. "Good." A pause. "Then he should stay."

Silence but this one, it felt different. Not like something building, not like something about to break just… something that existed. Quietly, comfortably without needing to be more in that moment and maybe that was what they needed. Not another decision, not another test just a moment that didn't ask anything from them. Didn't demand clarity, didn't carry weight just… something simple. Something soft, something real and for once, that was enough.
