🖤
The door closed behind her softly but final enough to shut out the noise outside. The whispers, the looks, the questions, all of it stayed beyond that door.
Inside, it was just them again but not like before, not uncertain, not "almost." Something had changed and they both knew it.
Cassy leaned slightly against the desk watching him. "…We can't keep avoiding it," she said quietly.
Caleb met her gaze. "I'm not." A pause. "Are you?"
Cassy shook her head. "No."
Silence because now this wasn't about whether something existed between them. That part was already clear this was about what they were going to call it and what that meant.
"They're going to ask," Cassy said softly.
Caleb nodded. "I know." A pause. "And we can't keep answering with silence."
That was true because silence, silence used to protect them. Now it only made things unclear.
Cassy stepped a little closer not hesitant, not unsure just… present. "What do you want this to be?" she asked.
That question, it wasn't simple but it was honest and it needed an honest answer.
Caleb didn't rush, didn't default to control, didn't decide for both of them. He thought, really thought.
Then, "Something real," he said.
Cassy almost smiled. "That's vague."
A faint pause. "I know."
Then he added, "Something where we choose each other."
That landed differently because that wasn't vague, that was intention.
Cassy held his gaze. "…Even when it's inconvenient?" she asked.
Caleb didn't hesitate. "Yes." A pause. "Especially then."
Silence because that, that was what mattered not when things were easy but when they weren't.
Cassy exhaled slowly. "…Okay." That one word, it wasn't small, it meant she was meeting him there halfway, fully.
"So what does that make us?" she asked.
A hint of something softer in her voice now not uncertainty just curiosity.
Caleb stepped closer, not rushing, not overwhelming just enough to close the space. "…It makes us something we don't walk away from easily," he said.
Cassy tilted her head slightly. "That still doesn't answer the question."
A faint pause then he said it. "We're together." Simple, clear no hesitation, no room for misinterpretation just truth.
Silence because hearing it out loud, that changed everything again not in a dramatic way but in a real one.
Cassy's breath softened slightly. "…Together," she repeated testing it, feeling it, letting it settle.
Caleb didn't look away. "Yes." A pause. "If that's what you want too."
And that, that part mattered most because this wasn't just his decision, jt never should've been.
Cassy looked at him for a long moment thinking, feeling, weighing everything, then, "…Yeah," she said softly. A pause. "That's what I want."
And just like that it wasn't unspoken anymore, it wasn't almost, it wasn't undefined, it was real. Named, chosen, together.
Caleb exhaled quietly not relief, something deeper, something steadier. "Then we don't hide it," he said.
Cassy nodded. "We don't." A pause. "But we handle it properly." That word again, properly.
Caleb almost smiled. "On our terms."
Cassy smiled back slightly. "On our terms."
Silence but this time it wasn't about what they hadn't said, jt was about what they finally did.
And outside that door, the world was still watching, still waiting, still curious but inside, they had their answer.
And that was enough to face everything else together.
