There was no dramatic moment, no sudden movement, no words that announced it. It just… happened slowly, naturally, inevitably.
Cassy didn't move away. Caleb didn't either and for the first time neither of them tried to. The space between them was gone now not just physically but in everything that mattered.
Cassy's breath was steady but her heart not so much. "You're not stepping back," she said softly.
Caleb's voice was quieter than usual. "No." A pause. "Neither are you."
She didn't deny it. "…I'm not."
Silence but this silence, it wasn't uncertain anymore, it wasn't fragile, it was decided not in words but in choice. In presence in the way neither of them pulled away.
Caleb lifted his hand slightly not fast, not certain just… careful like he was giving her time to stop him if she wanted to.
Cassy watched the movement, felt it and didn't stop him. That was all the permission he needed. His fingers brushed lightly against hers softly, barely there but enough. Enough to feel everything shift.
Cassy's breath caught just slightly but she didn't pull away. Instead, her fingers moved too meeting his closing the space completely and just like that there was no distance left. No hesitation, no "almost." just real.
Caleb exhaled slowly like he didn't even realize he'd been holding his breath. "…Cassy."
Her name sounded different again not controlled, not guarded just… his.
She looked at him close now, closer than they had ever been before. "…Yeah?" she whispered.
Caleb didn't rush, didn't lean in immediately, didn't take more than what she gave because this, this mattered too much to get wrong.
"I don't want to lose this," he said quietly.
Cassy's eyes softened. "…Then don't." A pause. "Just don't try to control it."
He nodded. "I won't."
And this time she believed him because he wasn't forcing anything, be wasn't deciding for both of them, he was just… here with her.
Cassy's gaze dropped briefly to their hands. Still connected, still steady then back to him. "…This changes things," she said softly.
Caleb nodded. "Yes." No hesitation, no pretending otherwise.
"Are you okay with that?" she asked. That question mattered because this wasn't just a moment, it was a shift, a real one.
Caleb held her gaze. "I am." A pause. "Are you?"
Cassy didn't answer immediately not because she didn't know but because she was feeling it fully, everything, the risk, the uncertainty, the history. And the way her hand was still holding his warmly, steady, real.
"…Yeah," she said softly. "I am."
And that was it, bo dramatic kiss, no overwhelming rush, just two people choosing not to pull away anymore.
Choosing to stop pretending they were just fixing something, choosing something new, something real, something that didn't need to be defined yet but was already there.
In the way they stayed, in the way they didn't let go, jn the way "almost" finally disappeared.
And something honest took its place.
