Chapter 52 - CHAPTER 51: WHEN IT STARTS BETWEEN THEM

🖤

The tension didn't disappear after the meeting, it followed them quietly, persistent, unavoidable.

Cassy returned to her desk, sat down, opened her laptop but for the first time in days she didn't move because everything felt heavier now, not just the situation but him.

"You didn't have to do that." His voice behind her.

Cassy closed her eyes briefly then turned. Caleb stood there watching her again.

"Yes, I did," she said softly.

Silence.

"For the record," he added, "I wasn't talking about the statement."

Cassy frowned slightly. "…Then what?"

"The meeting." A pause. "You didn't have to take responsibility."

Cassy held his gaze. "I wasn't taking blame," she said. Another pause. "I was taking ownership." That difference mattered.

Caleb studied her. "…You shouldn't have to carry that alone."

Cassy shook her head slightly. "I'm not alone." A pause. "But I'm not invisible either."

That line stayed because that was the truth she wasn't just standing beside him, she was part of it now, fully.

Caleb stepped closer. "I didn't want it to reach this point," he said quietly.

Cassy let out a soft breath. "…Neither did I."

Silence.

Because for once they were on the same side of the truth but that didn't make it easier.

"You should go home early," he said.

That made her pause. "…Why?"

"Because you need it."

Cassy almost smiled, almost. "And you don't?"

Caleb didn't answer because that wasn't the point. "I can handle it," he said instead.

Cassy looked at him carefully. "That's not what I asked."

Silence.

Because she saw it, the pressure, the weight, the control he was trying to hold onto and for the first time it wasn't enough.

"You don't always have to handle everything alone," she said softly.

That line hit differently because it wasn't about her anymore, it was about him.

Caleb exhaled slowly. "…I know." But the way he said it sounded like something he was still learning.

Cassy stood up. "I'm not leaving early," she said.

Caleb frowned slightly. "That wasn't a suggestion."

Cassy tilted her head just a little. "It sounded like one." A pause. "And I'm choosing not to take it."

Silence.

That made something shift in his expression, not frustration, something else, respect.

"You're stubborn," he said.

Cassy smiled faintly. "…You noticed?"

A quiet moment passed between them, small but real then it faded because the pressure was still there, still waiting, still pushing.

"You staying doesn't make this easier," Caleb said.

Cassy met his gaze. "I'm not trying to make it easier." A pause. "I'm trying to make it real."

That line stayed because that was the difference now, they weren't avoiding it, they weren't pretending, they were in it fully and that meant every choice mattered more, wvery word carried weight, every silence said something.

Cassy stepped back slightly. "I'll finish the reports," she said professionally again, controlled again but not distant, not completely.

Caleb nodded once but before he turned, "…Cassy."

She looked at him and for a second everything else disappeared. "Don't disappear again."

Her chest tightened slightly. "I didn't disappear," she said softly. A pause. "I just needed to breathe."

Caleb held her gaze. "…Then don't stop breathing."

Silence.

And somehow that meant more than anything else he'd said today because now it wasn't just about staying, it was about surviving everything that came with it.

Together.

Or not at all.
