The interior's reading position was the same position it had been since Arc Four Chapter Four.

The angle it provided on the gate network's dimensional frequency had not changed — geography did not change, the reading position's specific relationship to the network's connection architecture remained the relationship it had always been. What had changed was everything else: the connection architecture itself, the acceleration's effect on the connection frequencies, the instability index's interior entries progressing from Level Zero toward Level One in the eastern sections, the scholar's accumulated data now containing the full acceleration phase's documented evidence rather than the approach toward the acceleration that Arc Four's sessions had recorded.

He reached the position at midmorning. The interior's wrong sky above him — differently wrong from Seolmun's wrong sky, the wrongness at a different stage of the same fundamental process. The interior had been Level Zero in the coverage map's first international notation entry. The tenth revision's preliminary notation now showed Level One threshold approaching in the eastern interior sections. The Stage Three incorporation that the third nation had shown was not this nation's current condition. It was this nation's trajectory.

The scholar was at their position — the northwestern valley adjacent, the angle that had been producing the best available reading on the routing sequence's acceleration phase data since the wider world arc's sessions.

They were working.

He watched them work before approaching.

Not from concealment — from the observation distance that his arrival at the position produced before he completed the approach. The scholar reading the network's connection data through their accumulated method, the Vethara archive's framework applied to the acceleration phase's latest entries, the comparison between the pre-acceleration baseline and the current state producing the specific deviation analysis that their method was built to generate.

The scholar's body carried something his body did not carry and had not carried before the wider world arc's Chapter Three reading showed it to him.

He sat at the position's working distance from them. The current event's acceleration rate was faster than fifteen of the seventeen previous events. Faster than any event that had been documented before the routing sequence's strategic targeting component had been fully developed.

The two events with faster acceleration rates: both from the archive's most recent century. Both events where the routing sequence had already eliminated the most significant counter-capacity civilizations before the acceleration phase began. Both events where the network's remaining connections were fewer and more isolated, the exponential rate applying to a smaller active base.

The current event's routing sequence had been more thorough in its counter-capacity elimination than the two most comparable events. The Solhari had been reached earlier. The Vethara documentation capacity was being addressed in real time.

The current event was the most comprehensively managed consumption event in the archive's documented history.

"We are the most efficiently targeted universe the archive has recorded," the scholar said. The statement had the quality of every other statement the scholar produced — precise, accurate, without excess. Not performed grief. The documentation of what the documentation showed.

"Yes," he said.

They returned to the archive. He returned to his readings.

They worked in parallel for three hours.

He had been working alongside the scholar since Arc Four Chapter Four's first exchange — the data sharing, the complementarity produced by his depth and their duration, the combination that neither produced alone. He had been at this position in the interior's northwestern valley adjacent across multiple sessions. The rhythm of working alongside the scholar had become the specific rhythm of a collaboration that had settled into its own operational pattern.

"The archive cannot be complete," they said. "The worlds the archive documents are being consumed. The connections the archive documents are being consumed. The archive will survive the network's consumption — the documentation persists after what it documents is gone. But the archive cannot document what it has not documented. The worlds consumed before the Vethara civilization made contact with them — the worlds the routing sequence consumed before the network reached them — those worlds have no record in the archive."

He understood where the statement was arriving.

"The archive is the record of what survived long enough to be known," they said. "Not the record of what existed. Everything that existed before knowledge of it was possible — everything the consumption reached before the connection reached it — the archive has no entry for. The archive's completeness is bounded by what the connections allowed the Vethara to know."

He read their pattern. The grief's specific quality at this statement: the grief of a documentation method encountering the fundamental limit of documentation. The archive could only document what the network had reached. The network's reach was not the universe's extent. The universe's full extent would never be known because the consumption had preceded the documentation in the places it had reached first.

The archive was complete within its bounds. The bounds were not the universe.

"There are worlds," the scholar said, "that ended without a record. Without a name. Without any other world having known they existed."

He sat with this.

The narrator, which knew the full extent of what had existed across every universe the consumption had reached across every parallel universe the story contained, observed the scholar stating what the narrator had always known: the archive was incomplete not through failure of the archive but through the fundamental limit of documentation. What existed was larger than what could be known. What ended was larger than what could be mourned.

He could not tell the scholar what the narrator knew. He did not know what the narrator knew. He knew what the scholar had said — accurate, precise, the documentation method applied to the documentation method's own limits.

"Yes," he said.

They picked up the archive notation. They continued working.

The session's final hours produced the routing sequence's most complete picture the collaboration had assembled.

The acceleration phase's rate comparison combined with his existential layer readings of the current connection frequency data produced a calculation neither could generate alone: the specific number of active connections remaining in the network's architecture, the rate at which the acceleration phase was consuming them, and the timeline to the final configuration when the last connections serving the last universe would be the only connections remaining.

The scholar wrote the same calculation in the archive. Their method produced the same number through the historical chronology's rate comparison applied to the current rate data. Two methods. The same result. The result was accurate.

He looked at the number.

Then he looked at the scholar writing it in the archive.

The scholar was adding the most precise timeline calculation the archive had ever contained for a network consumption event to the archive of what the network had contained. The archive that documented what the connections had connected was now documenting the precise schedule of when the last connections would be consumed.

They finished writing. They looked at the number.

"The archive has never had this entry before," they said. "A timeline for the final configuration."

"No," he said.

"Every previous event the archive documented — the timeline was reconstructed after the fact. From the records of what remained. The timeline was known only in retrospect."

"This is the first event where the archive is documenting the timeline in advance," he said.

They received this. "Yes."

They looked at the number for a moment. Then they added one final notation to the archive entry: Timeline to final configuration: calculated in advance. First instance in archive history. Record produced while the network described in this archive is still active.

He read this notation.

The archive's most important entry. Not the most comprehensive. Not the most detailed. The first entry produced while what the archive documented still existed to be documented.

He continued reading it.

The session completed at the late afternoon hour. The interior's wrong sky above them — the Level One threshold approaching in the eastern sections, the coverage map's tenth revision preliminary notation updating in his memory as he read the instability index's current values.

The scholar closed the archive. They looked at the northwestern valley — the Serpentine's atmospheric residue still faintly present in the air's quality, the valley having incorporated the five-day presence into its permanent dimensional character at a level below the coverage map's notation threshold but above zero.

"The Serpentine's world," the scholar said. "When I identified it from the residue — their world was among the first targeted. Their civilization had been documenting the network's connection to their world for longer than the Vethara archive's oldest entries. They had their own record."

"Where is it?" he said.

"Consumed with the world," the scholar said. "The connection that would have allowed us to access their record was consumed before we knew the record existed."

A world that had been documenting the same network the Vethara had been documenting. A record that had existed and that the consumption had reached before the Vethara archive had known to look for it.

He held this alongside what the scholar had said about the worlds that ended without a record.

"We are trying to be the record that survives," he said.

The scholar looked at him. Their pattern registered the accuracy of the statement — the specific quality of someone receiving a correct reading of something they had been doing without having articulated it in these terms.

"Yes," they said. "That is what the archive is for. Not just to know what existed. To be the evidence that something was trying to know."

He held this.

The evidence that something was trying to know. The archive as not simply documentation but as the record of documentation's attempt against the consumption's erasure. The Vethara civilization's identity around knowing — continuing to produce knowledge even as the consumption erased what the knowledge was about — as the specific form of opposition available to a civilization whose capacity was knowledge rather than force.

The coverage map was the same.

He was building the record of the gap territory's operational reality against the consumption's progression. The coverage map was the evidence that something had been trying to know what the territory required describing as the territory was being changed by what made the describing necessary.

"Yes," he said.

They went in different directions.

Evening. The apartment. The desk.

He opened the notebook.

He wrote the session's data — the acceleration phase's rate comparison, the routing sequence's timeline calculation in the back cover. The archive's final notation entry rendered in the coverage map's network section alongside the collaboration's data.

He looked at the number in the back cover.

Then he wrote beneath it:

The archive is the evidence that something was trying to know. The coverage map is the same. The scholar said this without saying it. I read it in what they said.

The words that produce the end of the network. The words produced while the network still exists.

This is the arc before the midpoint. The scholar is still here.

He stopped writing.

He read the last line.

He closed the back cover. He closed the notebook.

Outside, the interior's wrong sky held what it held. The northwestern valley's faint atmospheric residue. The acceleration's rate in the background processing. The number.

Tomorrow the scholar would be at the same position.

He went to sleep.
