The eastern section's light was wrong.

This was different. Street level. Not enough difference to stop a person's movement. Enough difference to register in the specific way that things register when the physical world's behavior has deviated from the physical laws that were producing it.

His ability flagged it before his conscious attention did. The eastern section's gate connection frequencies — the highest concentration in the gap territory's coverage — had crossed a threshold. The dimensional instability that his existential layer readings had been tracking as atmospheric pressure for months was now expressing itself in optical physics. He had not decided to develop it. The weight was not complaint. It was information. His body's current capacity and its current cost were both accurate. He noted them with the same neutrality.

The coverage map was changing what it described again. The territory was changing what it was.
