The gate had opened in a commercial alley on the covered zone's side — close enough to the gap that the response had to extend its deployment radius to cover it, which meant the response that arrived was different in configuration from a standard gate alarm. The Force tier came first, as always. Their deployment configuration had the quality of personnel who knew they were at the edge of their adequate range — organized, correct, with the specific additional attention to positioning that coverage-edge situations produced in well-trained personnel.
Then the Equal arrived.
He read them before they had fully entered the alley's situation — before his ability had accumulated sufficient observation to produce a detailed model, from the first registering of their presence in the deployment's configuration. He noted this without performing a response to it.
The Equal stood in the aftermath of the resolved situation with the specific stillness of someone who had completed an assessment and made a decision and had not yet acted on it. They stopped at a distance closer than the Institutional Voice and further than the First Warmth had been in the cooperation's aftermath. The assessment was still visible in their attention — not complete yet, running against the presence of the actual person rather than the navigation pattern's physical record. Their eyes had the quality of something still processing while appearing to have finished processing, which was the specific quality of an assessment capacity so fast that the visible signs of processing lagged behind the actual assessment.
They looked at him for approximately three seconds.
"What's your operational territory," they said.

"What did you find," they said.

It was not a question. He did not confirm it. His not confirming it was, to the Equal's assessment, a confirmation.

"The gap's going to get more complicated," they said.

Three uncertainties from one person was the most a single encounter had produced since the catastrophe began.
He turned and walked into the gap territory.
The territory was the same territory it had been that morning. He was slightly less comfortable in it than he had been six hours ago, not because the territory had changed but because the gap between what the territory contained and what the covered zone knew about it had narrowed, and narrowing that gap had not been one of the variables he had been managing.
