Chapter 22 - A New Demonic Plague

Within a few days, those with active connections in the Demon Suppression Division knew that a newcomer had arrived in the Xuan Battalion.

Logically, the Demon Suppression Division recruits new members every year, and old members always die. It's a common occurrence.

But this newcomer was different. Not only was she a woman, but rumors said she was personally selected by General Wei He.Those who wished to climb higher naturally spent their leisure time diligently cultivating their martial arts, honing their Realm, and striving to advance.

However, most people, knowing their talent was ordinary, lived day by day, simply trying to survive. Thus, most people were discussing this matter.

In the Xuan Battalion barracks, several men were gathered, quietly discussing over a plate of salted boiled beans.

"Is it true? Lord Wei would personally inquire about a newcomer's affairs?"

"Absolutely true! I heard Lord Xu say it himself that day!"

"Hiss... Could it be a daughter of some important figure, here for training?"

"Training? Coming to our Demon Suppression Division to train? Are they tired of living?"

Everyone discussed animatedly, and in their words, a hint of reverence unconsciously emerged. The Demon Suppression Division, after all, was a place where fists did the talking.

Just then footsteps approached.

Everyone subconsciously looked up.Jiang Yuechu passed by the entrance, holding her horizontal saber.

She seemed oblivious to the atmosphere, her gaze fixed straight ahead as she walked.

After that figure disappeared behind the door.Everyone finally breathed a sigh of relief.

"Damn... scared the hell out of me.""Did she... just look at me?""Look at you? To see how ugly you are? Hurry up and eat your beans!" The atmosphere in the room was somewhat heavy.

Jiang Yuechu pushed the door open and scanned the room. Aside from Liu Chen, the remaining few also looked somewhat familiar. In the crowd, a burly man with a scarred face immediately stood up when he saw her.

It was Tiger Zhao, whom she had slammed against a pillar that day.

After several days, his injuries appeared to have mostly healed. Fortunately, Jiang Yuechu had held back some strength then; otherwise, let alone walking, it would be questionable if he could even open his eyes now.

Seeing her again now, the man forced a smile and actually came forward to greet her."Sister Jiang... Jiang." Jiang Yuechu gave him a strange look.Seeing her reaction, Tiger Zhao chuckled dryly.

"That day... that day, I, Tiger Zhao, was blind and offended you. You are a magnanimous person, please don't take it to heart." Jiang Yuechu shook her head, not bothering to waste more words with him.

Her gaze passed over Tiger Zhao and landed on Liu Chen.Staying in the Demon Suppression Division for several days, unfamiliar with the place, was truly not easy.

Today, finally, there was some activity.Seeing her look, Liu Chen nodded and motioned to an empty seat, "Sit first."Jiang Yuechu sat down as instructed.

The room wasn't large; a long table and a few benches, with seven or eight people seated, made it feel a bit crowded.

Liu Chen's gaze swept over everyone's faces one by one before he slowly began to speak."In Zhangye Commandery, Ganzhou, half a month ago, the Black River flowed backward for three days, the river water was foul-smelling, and all fish and shrimp died. I presume you've all heard of this." Everyone nodded, their expressions solemn.

Such an anomaly was naturally known to those in the Demon Suppression Division.

"The Department previously sent a team of brothers from the Yellow Character Battalion to investigate, but now, there's been no news." The room instantly fell silent.Although the Yellow Character Battalion primarily focused on reconnaissance, they were not powerless.

While perhaps not as skilled in direct combat as the Xuan Battalion, they were all experts in stealth, tracking, and escape. Even ordinary bandits, a hundred or so of them, couldn't take down an entire team.

Clearly. This matter was, nine times out of ten, related to Demons."Chief, The Department is only sending one team of us?" In the corner, an old soldier, seemingly the oldest, around forty, couldn't help but speak.

"Captain Liu, it's not that I, Old Wang, am boosting the enemy's morale and diminishing our own, but we don't even know what kind of thing it is, or what Realm it's in. Are we just supposed to charge in blindly? Is The Department sending us to our deaths?"

As soon as these words were spoken, several people in the room subconsciously nodded. They weren't afraid to fight Demons to the death. But going to their deaths so vaguely, everyone felt uneasy.

Liu Chen shook his head, a bitter expression on his face. "Our Dusi is currently short-staffed. Not to mention the various demonic plagues that have suddenly appeared, just the few places where powerful Demons are active require a lot of manpower to suppress."

He sighed and recounted the current situation in detail. "Not to mention, crucial areas in various prefectures require personnel for patrols and defense, to prevent Demons from taking advantage of any weakness."

After his words fell, the room once again plunged into a dead silence. Although the Longyou Circuit was remote and sparsely populated. The situation throughout the Great Tang was similar.

Even the General Bureau in the capital had insufficient manpower compared to the number of Demons.

Jiang Yuechu did not speak, merely listening silently.

What others heard was crisis.

What she heard, however, was a different scene.More Demons meant more Dao Cultivation she could gain.

More Dao Cultivation meant faster improvement in her own strength.

Of course, for the common people of this world, living in such a Demon-ridden era was naturally unbearable.

But as a certain saying from her previous life went; Precisely because one understands that one is practically powerless, one must not so easily allow powerlessness to become a reality.

Seeing everyone looking worried and dispirited, Liu Chen took a deep breath and slapped the table. "The people of Zhangye are waiting to die, and the Yellow Character Battalion brothers' bones are not yet cold. Are we just going to sit here sighing?"

"Chief, that's not what we mean..." Old Wang sighed, "It's just... we need to at least know what kind of thing the opponent is, right?"

"When do we depart?" A clear, cold voice suddenly rang out in the room.

Everyone was stunned, looking in unison at Jiang Yuechu in the corner.

Liu Chen was also taken aback, opening his mouth, having forgotten what he was about to say.

Jiang Yuechu raised her eyes, looking at him calmly. "Since we're going, it's better sooner than later. Wasting time here won't make the Demons die on their own."

Liu Chen took a deep breath, "Tomorrow morning, we depart at the Mao hour. Everyone go back and prepare. The journey to Zhangye is long. Stock up on dry rations, medicine, and... remember to leave a letter for your families."

Upon hearing this, everyone's expressions varied. But the current situation of the Demon Suppression Division was just so.

Even if they knew nothing about the opponent's nature or strength, they still had to bite the bullet and go.If they held back due to unknown origins.

Then why would the Demon Suppression Division be called the Demon Suppression Division?Perhaps, they would be lucky and only encounter minor Demons.Or, they would use their lives to gather intelligence—that powerful Demons were active in this area.

"...Yes!"
