Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Laws?

Reward: [Authority of the Unwritten]

[Authority of the Unwritten: A single use authority ticket for the user to embedded one unwritten law onto their self.

Note: Only usable while User is in pre-incarnation from]

Pre-incarnation form estimated time: 23 hours 59 minutes…

Valo's thoughts were racing, more appearing one after another. Unwritten law? Embed an unwritten law onto… himself? What the fuck did that even mean? Valo had no idea what he was doing… I mean first of all. Apparently. He had LIVED 8 LIVES! and he remembered none of that, except his latest as a street cat… what significantly world altering had he even done?

Second of all… apparently, he had some… weird, Valo looked at the floating blue screen in front of him and tilted his head slightly, Thing? On him… that gave him rewards for achieving something. Weird rewards, but rewards nonetheless, I guess.

But now the actual problem… How was he supposed to use even use his 'reward'… he didn't know what laws even were, and much less what unwritten ones were.

"Okay… laws… laws…. laws— Didn't the humans talk about some laws… Law enforcement? But aren't those people? Valo had seen a lot on the streets, including guys dressed in the colour similar to the ocean, to which some referred as law enforcement… But that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Why could he embed some old dude into him?

Or… Do the guys call law enforcement, just uphold those laws? So, they're some kind of rules. There were also rules among the street cats, like don't steal from other's boxes, don't fight for no reason and etc."

So, Laws uphold something? On the universal scale then… that everything drops down is a law? And that cats like himself will always fall on all fours and bread always on the side with the spread on it? But were these written laws or unwritten ones? If they were written… where? In the fabric of the universe? does that mean unwritten laws are things that don't exist and he could embed and create one such thing onto himself?

Would there be downsides in embedding an unwritten law onto himself? wouldn't he be in conflict with the universe itself. Or would he exempt from such limitation and confrontation? I mean it was a reward from a magical text appearing in front of him in a seemingly infinite darkness. That just makes perfect sense and isn't frying his brain just more, definitely not.

And what did it mean pre-incarnation from was estimated to last 23 hours and 59 minutes— well know it was down to— 21 HOURS AND 5 MINUTES!? He'd SPENT ALMOST 3 HOURS AND GOT NOWHERE.

Valo closed his eyes and calmed in himself, taking a few more deep breaths.

"Am I going to be reborn in 21 hours? is that what the timer is implying? I mean… I guess I have lived 8 lives."

Even if he could only remember one of them. Though that made a surprising amount of sense.

"FOCUS!"

Valo mentally slapped himself as he shook his head. He had to figure out this law thing and make the most out of it. First, he needed to actually figure out what the so called 'written laws' where, and even if he wasn't sure, he had a pretty solid guess thinking of them as laws embedded into the fabric of the universe that made up the rules of the universe. At least Valo thought that was a decent guess.

If written laws were all that. Then wouldn't unwritten laws just be laws that didn't… actually— yet exist? Would it then become a written law after being embedded onto him or would only those embed on the universe become written laws?

Valo closed his eyes and tried to focus on the problem at hand. Namely figuring out a good unwritten law to embed onto him. However due to his poor patience he opened his eyes after just a moment and looked at the timer again.

Pre-incarnation form estimated time: 2 hours 34 minutes…

"WHAT THE ACTUAL—"

Okay! Valo Focus. Valo berated himself as he took a deep breath once again. How was he even breathing though? Wasn't he in absolute darkness… oh yeah did he even have a body? how did that make sen—

"FOCUS!"

Valo was practically beating himself mentally right now.

Laws. What can they actually do? Valo began to ponder and list thoughts as they came.

Physical laws? Things falling down… Survival. Causal laws? Consequences… inevitability like death. Informational laws? Memory… awareness and perception? Then it hit him… Laws that define someone. That's why he could only now choose a law, during his pre-incarnation state. He was currently no one and at the same time someone. Not bound by the laws that create an identity.

But that didn't matter, defining himself as someone might just end up in him dying immediately if he did it in this place. What if he himself defined laws? What if the truly stayed out of the influence of laws and instead influenced laws himself? But would the universe then reject him for violating all its rules… that wouldn't be fun at all.

A Notification appeared in front of Valo's face.

System notification: 30 minutes remaining of pre-incarnation form.

Remarks: Better hurry up kitty

Valo pushed the notification aside, even ignoring the remark— how could a system even make remar— You know what? It doesn't matter.

Valo moved onto his reward he had an idea of what unwritten law he would embed onto himself. Even if it seemed a little risky, it was worth it to try. Cause apparently, it wasn't like he lacked any life experience.

Focusing on the reward a new notification popped up

Would you like to use reward [Authority of the Unwritten]: Yes / No

Valo mentally clicked yes and the system beeped, he felt himself being opened to the universe itself. His senses we're saying all sorts of stuff, but none of it made any sense. Valo tried catching his thoughts, but it was hard, they were all over, not even his as far as he knew. He focused and reached out to grab thought of the law he had planned and then inserted it into the systems screen.

The screen disappeared and Valo returned to normal. He didn't feel any different. Just like himself... like he always did.
