Chapter 29 - LEARNING TOO FAST

Chapter Thirty: Learning Too Fast

The air felt… thinner.

Not physically.

But structurally.

Like something invisible had been stretched too far—and was waiting to snap back.

Killian noticed it first.

He stood still, eyes scanning the road, but not in the normal way anymore.

He wasn't looking at things.

He was looking through them.

"…It's different," he said quietly.

Gibson leaned against a nearby post, arms folded loosely.

"That's becoming your favorite line," he muttered.

Killian didn't respond.

Because this time—

it really was.

The Pattern Beneath

"Look," Killian said.

He pointed—not at an object—

but at the space between two streetlights.

At first, it looked normal.

Empty.

But when Gibson focused—

he saw it.

A faint misalignment.

Like the space didn't fully agree with itself.

"…That wasn't there before," Gibson said.

Killian nodded slowly.

"It was."

A pause.

"We just couldn't see it."

Arel Steps In

Arel approached carefully, his gaze sharper than before.

"You're noticing deeper layers," he said.

Killian didn't look at him.

"It's not just deeper," he replied.

A pause.

"It's faster."

Too Fast

Gibson frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Killian finally turned.

"It means we're adapting faster than we should."

Silence.

Arel's expression darkened slightly.

"That's not a good thing."

Killian shook his head.

"No."

A pause.

"It means it's letting us."

The Trap

The words hung in the air.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

Gibson straightened slightly.

"…You think this is intentional?"

Killian nodded once.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"We're not ahead of it."

Another.

"We're inside its learning process."

Testing the Limit

Gibson exhaled slowly.

"…Alright," he said. "Then let's push it."

Arel immediately stepped forward.

"No."

Both of them looked at him.

"You don't test something that's studying you," Arel said firmly.

Killian's expression didn't change.

"We don't have a choice."

The Risk Taken Anyway

Killian stepped forward.

Just one step—

but intentional.

He focused again.

This time—not on something broken—

but on something stable.

A nearby streetlight.

Solid.

Consistent.

Reliable.

Rewriting Stability

Killian narrowed his eyes slightly.

Then—

he pushed.

Not physically.

Not mentally.

Conceptually.

The streetlight flickered—

then changed.

Not visibly.

But fundamentally.

It became…

more real.

Immediate Consequence

Killian staggered.

Gibson caught him quickly.

"Hey—!"

Killian blinked hard.

"…That was a bad idea," he muttered.

Backlash

The air around them tightened.

The same pressure from before—

but sharper.

Focused.

Arel's voice dropped instantly.

"It's responding."

Not From Afar

This time—

it didn't feel distant.

It felt—

close.

The Presence Targets

Killian straightened slowly.

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

"I know."

The misalignment between the streetlights widened.

The space twisted—

not chaotically—

but deliberately.

Gibson's voice lowered.

"…That's new."

Killian didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't look away.

Because now—

he understood something important.

Final Realization

"It's not watching anymore," Killian said.

A pause.

"It's focusing."

The First Direct Move

The space between the streetlights collapsed inward—

not violently—

but precisely.

Targeted.

At them.

Gibson tensed.

"Okay… that's definitely aimed."

Arel stepped forward immediately.

"Don't engage it directly," he warned.

But Killian didn't move.

Because this time—

he didn't feel fear.

He felt something else.

Understanding.

Final Line

"Good," Killian said quietly.

A pause.

"Now we know where it's safer to go deeper
