Chapter 22 - NO MORE WAITING

Chapter Twenty-Three: No More Waiting

The world didn't try to hide it anymore.

It failed openly.

Global Shift

It started with confusion.

Then fear.

Now—

it was something worse.

Acceptance.

People no longer questioned the glitches.

They expected them.

A man walked past a glass building without looking at his reflection.

A woman covered every mirror in her house with cloth.

Children were told not to stare at screens for too long.

Because everyone had heard the stories.

And too many had seen them.

Broadcast Emergency

Every channel.

Every platform.

The same message.

"Remain calm. Avoid prolonged eye contact with reflective surfaces. If you notice inconsistencies in your environment—do not engage."

But it was already too late.

Because curiosity didn't stop.

It spread.

A Boy

He stood in front of a dark phone screen.

Watching.

Waiting.

"Just once…" he whispered.

The reflection didn't move.

He leaned closer.

Closer.

Then—

It blinked.

He didn't.

Back on the Road

Killian stood in silence.

Watching the horizon like he could see the damage spreading.

He didn't need to.

He could feel it now.

"They're everywhere," he said quietly.

Arel nodded.

"We've moved past containment."

Killian exhaled slowly.

"Yeah."

A pause.

"So we stop trying to contain it."

Arel looked at him.

"And do what instead?"

Killian turned.

"We end it."

The Decision

Arel's expression hardened slightly.

"That's not a plan."

Killian stepped closer.

"It is."

A pause.

"We go back in."

Silence.

Arel didn't speak immediately.

Because this—

This was the point where most people broke.

And Killian…

Wasn't breaking.

He was choosing.

"You almost didn't come back last time," Arel said.

Killian nodded.

"I know."

"And you want to go deeper?"

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Why

Arel studied him carefully.

"Why?" he asked.

Killian's voice didn't rise.

Didn't harden.

But it carried weight.

"Because this isn't slowing down," he said.

A pause.

"They don't need Gibson anymore."

Another.

"But I still need him."

Silence.

That was it.

Not strategy.

Not logic.

Choice.

Gibson

He was fading faster now.

Not violently.

Quietly.

Like something dimming.

His thoughts were slower.

His voice weaker.

His body… barely holding form.

But he was still there.

Still aware.

Still fighting.

"…He came back…" Gibson murmured faintly.

The fractured sky above him pulsed weakly.

"He's not done…"

The Presence (Watching)

It had withdrawn.

But it had not left.

Observation continued.

Patterns collected.

Outcomes predicted.

And now—

A conclusion formed.

"The subject designated 'Killian' will attempt reintegration."

A pause.

"Prepare."

Back to Killian

Arel finally moved.

He stepped closer.

"If we do this," he said, "we do it right."

Killian nodded.

"Agreed."

The New Plan

"No more pulling blindly," Arel continued.

Killian listened carefully.

"You tried to remove him," Arel said. "That won't work."

Killian frowned slightly.

"Then what does?"

Arel's voice dropped.

"You stabilize him."

A pause.

"Inside that world."

Killian's eyes narrowed.

"You're saying we don't bring him out…"

Arel nodded.

"Not immediately."

Silence.

Then—

"We rebuild him where he is."

Understanding the Enemy

"They don't destroy randomly," Arel said.

"They replace based on structure."

Killian nodded slowly.

"So we give Gibson structure."

"Yes."

A pause.

"Something they can't overwrite."

Killian's mind raced.

"Memory?" he asked.

"Not enough."

"Emotion?"

"Too unstable."

Killian clenched his jaw slightly.

"Then what?"

Arel looked directly at him.

"Identity."

The Risk

Killian's expression shifted.

"That's not something I can just hand him."

"No," Arel said.

A pause.

"But you can remind him."

Silence.

Killian understood.

The Cost

"If you do this," Arel said quietly, "you're not just entering that world."

Killian didn't move.

"You're linking yourself to him."

A pause.

"If he breaks…"

Killian finished it.

"I break."

Arel didn't deny it.

The Choice (Again)

Killian exhaled once.

Then nodded.

"Then I won't let him break."

Preparation

Arel handed him the anchor again.

This time—

Killian didn't hesitate.

He took it firmly.

"What happens if I can't get back?" he asked.

Arel's expression didn't change.

"Then I close the door."

Silence.

Killian nodded once.

"Fair."

Gibson

He could feel it again.

Faint.

But stronger than before.

"…You're coming back…" he whispered.

A weak smile formed.

"Idiot…"

The Edge

Killian stood at the forest line again.

The same place.

But not the same moment.

Everything had changed.

This wasn't a rescue attempt anymore.

This was a commitment.

Final Line

Killian stepped forward—

without hesitation.

Because this time—

He wasn't just trying to save Gibson.

He was refusing to lose him.
