Chapter 71 - The Space Between Decisions

Chapter 71: The First Crack in Trust

Nothing moved.

Not the system.

Not the entity.

Not the hunters.

Not even the man.

For the first time—

Everything was equal.

Equally unable to act.

Equally unable to decide.

And that—

Was the most unstable state of all.

"…Kael…" Echo whispered.

"…this won't hold…"

"…I know."

Kael didn't move.

Because moving—

Would break it.

Even slightly.

"…Then what do we do?" Lira asked.

Her voice was low.

Careful.

Like even speaking too loudly—

Might trigger something.

"…We don't rush," Kael said.

"…We think."

Still tilted their head.

"…Thinking usually makes things worse."

"…Yeah."

Kael smirked faintly.

"…But not thinking gets us erased."

That shut it down.

For now.

The system flickered first.

Not acting.

Trying.

"…control… unavailable…"

The entity followed.

"…adaptation… incomplete…"

The hunters—

Didn't speak.

But their presence—

Tensed.

Like something held back—

Against its will.

And the man—

Just watched.

"…You can't maintain this forever," he said calmly.

"…I don't need forever."

Kael's voice didn't waver.

"…Just long enough."

A pause.

"…For what?"

Kael didn't answer.

Because he wasn't sure yet.

Not fully.

But he knew one thing—

This moment—

Was the only one they'd get.

"…Kael…" Echo whispered.

"…they're all adjusting…"

"…Yeah."

And that—

Was the real danger.

Because once they adapted—

This would end.

Fast.

"…Then we move now," Lira said.

"…Before they recover."

Kael shook his head slightly.

"…No."

"…What?"

"…If we move first—"

A pause.

"…we break the balance."

Silence.

That made sense.

Too much sense.

"…Then we just stand here?" Lira asked.

"…No."

Kael's eyes shifted.

Toward Still.

"…We change something."

Still blinked.

"…Don't look at me."

"…You're the only one here who can act without triggering them."

A pause.

"…Because I ignore things."

"…Exactly."

Silence.

Still looked around.

At everything—

Frozen.

Paused.

Waiting.

"…And what do you want me to do?" they asked.

Kael stepped closer.

"…Break something small."

"…That sounds vague."

"…That's the point."

Because if they broke something too big—

Everything would react.

But something small—

Might slip through.

Still considered that.

Then—

"…Fine."

They stepped forward.

Toward the edge of the space.

Where one of the system's patterns—

Barely held.

Still reached out—

And touched it.

Nothing happened.

For a second.

Then—

The pattern shifted.

Just slightly.

Not broken.

Not removed.

Changed.

And instantly—

Everything reacted.

The system surged.

"…corruption detected…"

The entity shifted.

"…unexpected variation…"

The hunters—

Moved.

"…adjusting."

The man smiled.

"…There it is."

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Now."

He moved.

Fast.

Not toward the system.

Not toward the entity.

Toward Lira.

"…We leave."

She didn't hesitate.

"…Finally."

He grabbed her arm—

And reached for a fragment.

But this time—

It resisted.

Hard.

"…Kael!" Echo shouted.

"…they're blocking it!"

"…Yeah."

Because they had learned.

Too fast.

The system—

Locked the paths.

The entity—

Distorted them.

The hunters—

Cut them off completely.

"…You're not going anywhere," one of them said.

Kael smirked faintly.

"…Wasn't planning to use that."

A pause.

"…Then what?"

Kael looked at Still.

"…Do it again."

Still frowned slightly.

"…You're pushing your luck."

"…Yeah."

"…Do it anyway."

Silence.

Then—

Still stepped forward again.

This time—

Not touching a pattern.

Touching—

Nothing.

And ignoring—

Everything.

The space—

Split.

Not by force.

By absence.

A gap.

Small.

But enough.

"…Now," Kael said.

They moved.

Together.

Into the gap.

And everything—

Snapped.

The balance broke.

The system surged.

The entity reacted.

The hunters moved.

The man—

Watched.

But they were already gone.

Pulled into something—

Unstable.

Unpredictable.

Unknown.

"…That worked," Lira said breathlessly.

"…Barely."

Kael exhaled slowly.

"…And now…"

A pause.

"…they'll stop holding back."

Silence.

Because that—

Was the real problem.

They had just escaped.

But next time—

There would be no pause.

No hesitation.

No balance.

Just war.

And they had just made their first move.
