The path ended where the village began.
Or what remained of it.
Nicholas stopped.
The heat pressed against him, not as violently as before, but constant now, like something that refused to leave. Smoke rolled across the ground in thick waves, blurring the outlines of broken homes and fallen walls.
Otukpo was still there.
But it wasn't alive anymore.
Nicholas took a slow step forward.
Then another.
His chest tightened with every movement.
"This isn't real…" he whispered.
But it was.
The place where he had run barefoot that morning...
Gone.
The houses that once stood firm and familiar...collapsed.
The voices that filled the air were silenced.
Only the fire remained.
Crackling.
Watching.
Nicholas moved deeper into the ruins, his eyes searching desperately through the smoke.
"Mother…?" he called, his voice hoarse.
No answer.
He swallowed hard.
"Mother!"
The word echoed weakly, swallowed by the emptiness.
Nicholas stumbled over debris, nearly falling as he pushed forward. His body ached, his hands burned, but he didn't stop.
"I'm here!" he shouted. "I came back...!"
A beam shifted nearby, collapsing with a dull thud.
Nicholas flinched.
Then ran toward it.
"Please…" he whispered as he reached the remains of a fallen structure. "Please be here…"
He dropped to his knees, ignoring the heat as he pulled at the debris.
Wood.
Ash.
Stone.
Nothing.
"No…"
He moved to another house.
Then another.
Calling.
Searching.
Hoping.
Finding nothing.
Nicholas's movements slowed.
His breath came unevenly now, his strength fading with every step.
"This can't be it…" he said, his voice barely holding together. "She has to be here… she has to..."
A sound interrupted him.
Soft.
Faint.
Nicholas froze.
"Hello?" he called carefully.
Silence.
Then again...
A weak cough.
Nicholas's heart leapt.
"Mother?!"
He turned toward the sound, pushing through smoke and scattered debris until he reached what remained of his home.
Or what had been his home.
The doorway was gone.
The roof had collapsed inward.
Only fragments of the walls still stood, cracked and unstable.
"Mother!" he shouted again, rushing forward.
The ground shifted under his feet as he stepped over broken wood and ash.
"Where are you?!"
Another cough.
Closer.
Nicholas dropped to his knees near a collapsed section of wall, his hands immediately digging through the debris.
"I hear you!" he said quickly. "Just...hold on, I'm here..."
His fingers struck something soft.
He froze.
Carefully...
Slowly...
He brushed the ash away.
Cloth.
Then...
Skin.
Nicholas's breath stopped.
"Mother…"
He pulled harder, clearing the debris with shaking hands until her face emerged from beneath the rubble.
Her eyes were half-open.
Unfocused.
But alive.
Relief crashed through him.
"You're okay," he said quickly, his voice breaking. "You're okay, I've got you. Just stay with me..."
She tried to speak.
No sound came.
Nicholas swallowed hard, forcing himself to stay steady.
"I'm going to get you out," he said. "I won't stop this time. I won't..."
He grabbed the fallen beam across her body.
Pulled.
It didn't move.
His chest tightened.
"No…"
He adjusted his grip.
Pulled again.
Pain surged through his hands.
Still...
Nothing.
Tears filled his eyes.
"I can do this," he said, more to himself than to her. "I can do this...I won't fail again...I won't..."
He pulled harder.
The beam shifted.
Just slightly.
Hope ignited.
"I'm moving it!" he said quickly. "Just hold on..."
His mother's hand moved weakly, her fingers brushing against his wrist.
Nicholas froze.
She shook her head.
Barely.
"No…" he said immediately. "Don't do that..don't..just wait...I can...!"
Her grip tightened.
Weak.
But certain.
Her lips moved again.
This time, a sound came but faintly.
"Stop…"
Nicholas shook his head violently. "No, I'm not stopping. I can get you out, just give me time..."
"There… is no time…"
The words were broken.
Barely there.
Nicholas's chest felt like it was tearing apart.
"There is!" he insisted. "I just have to..."
The ground trembled.
The fire shifted.
Closer.
Nicholas's breath hitched.
"No…"
His mother's eyes found his.
Clear now.
Focused.
"Listen… to me…"
"I am!" he said desperately. "I'm not leaving you...I won't..."
"You… must…"
Nicholas shook his head, tears falling freely now. "No...no! I already left once, but now I'm not doing it again."
Her hand tightened again.
Stronger this time.
"Look… at me…"
He did.
Really looked.
And saw it.
The truth.
She wasn't going to survive this.
Nicholas's breath shattered.
"No…"
Her fingers trembled against his.
"You… live…"
The words hit harder than anything else.
"I can't without you," he whispered.
"You… can…"
The fire surged again.
The structure above them cracked.
Nicholas's heart pounded violently.
"I can still move it!" he insisted, grabbing the beam again. "Just...just give me a little more time..."
Nicholas is urged to run as his home collapses in flames, leaving him helpless, grieving, carrying her final image and promise to return...
